  1. I'm mostly a Lurker on Darkmatters, but do try to follow most of the topics that gestate on the board. Sometimes I even participate. I haven't been a member all that long, but I remember playing Sacred using a copy I had to purchase from the UK because it wasn't available in the US yet. I like having a 512GB SSD as my boot drive on the PC I built but recently it has decided to not recognize the SSD sometimes and tries to boot from the 4TB data only harddrive. When it first happened, I panicked. Now I just go into BIOS and reset everything. I suppose I should get a spare SSD and make a copy but having heard there is an i9 intel processor, I want to get one of those. We also have iffy power here in the US, though I imagine not quite as bad as in South Africa. I have everything important on individual UPS boxes. It gives me a feeling of security to know that my electronics are protected.
  2. Book 4 is on Google Docwand, right now, has to be read there. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B7gkeHH7RMlOWTJscUhYem5aR1E?usp=sharing
  3. Again, thanks. I just tried to upload a non-fiction piece, "Binary as Applied to Games", but found that all my so carefully laid out tables were borked in the upload, even though I used a DocX upload. Since I can't upload it there, perhaps someone here might get some use out of it: Binary Applied to Gaming.pdf
  4. Thanks. It isn't much but I tried to make it a complete story.
  5. I just officially published my first story. It's really short, but I thought I should at least get something out there. If anyone is interested: https://www.fictionpress.com/s/3335099/1/The-Greatest-Game-on-Earth
  6. Doesn't look like something I would want to watch. There is already enough horror in the real world without making up more.
  7. Hmpf. The reason I got a computer so early was because I majored in computers for my Undergraduate Degree. I was supposed to get an Electrical Engineering Degree but took so many hardware and software courses that I actually asked if they would give me a Computer Science Degree instead. At the time I was seriously planning on purchasing a PDP-10 as my first computer but I had a wife and two children and was still in the Navy. It would have been awkward to move a PDP-10around the world with us and you know I would have left the furniture ... I did a little research and found the Apple ][e had recently come out and decided to go that way. I even took it with me onboard an aircraft carrier on a cruise once. I used it to maintain Divisional records and helped our Maintenance Department keep logs on all the aircraft. There was another junior officer who had brought his computer with him and I gave him a copy of the database program I had written and he used it to keep track of pilot landing statistics. Those were 'fun' days...
  8. What? You mean everyone in here isn't as old or older than I?
  9. Somewhere, but I have no idea where at this point. I bought my first Apple ][ in 1977. [Added] How can I change my edit options? I want to be able to SEE the BBCode so I can make corrections easier, but cannot find where to make the changes.
  10. Not sure it should earn any respect, but I still have all the Ultima games as well as a computer I can play them on. Three actually, because my iMac and my PC will both play them in emulation while I still have a working Apple ][c. My Apple ][e needs a new power supply. I really need to get it fixed so I can access everything I have stored on its HUGE 20MB harddrive.
  11. podgie_bear, I have survivors guilt almost every day. Why have so many of my friends died while I'm still here? Of course, if I had died, neither of my two beautiful daughters would be here either... something they have told me more than once. Early on, I remember feeling absolutely suicidal, but that has passed with the years. In your case, I'm sure the guilt isn't as strong, but your concern and your care for your wife shows your true feelings. She is first and you wish it had been you. Just continue to care for her and do your best to sort out the mess left by someone who shouldn't be allowed to drive anymore. No matter what happens, as long as you and your wife have each other, nothing else matters. In a few years, you both will look back on this, hug each other, and remark, "You know, it could have been so much worse." Give yourself time to get to that point. I'm not religious, so I can't pray for you, but I can hope that everything turns out for the best for both of you. I had a new car for three months when I got rear-ended much like you were. Unfortunately, in my case, they didn't total the car, the 'repaired' it. It never felt the same ever again and I ended up trading it in at a huge loss a few months later on for another car. Now I look back and realize that killing the other driver probably would have been a mistake, no matter how much I wanted to. Now I realize that continuing to live well and being happy that his insurance dropped his policy is the best revenge. Good luck!
  12. Hmm, just got a 4K UHD home theater setup ... piecemeal. I got the 4K TV and the 4K Blu-ray player first, but my old 7.1 receiver just wouldn't handle the load, so I ended up getting a 5.2 4K UHD capable receiver as well. I would post images but would have to leave my dungeon to do that and I'm in the middle of something right now. If anyone really cares, I will post links to the manufacturers' website with specs rather than images. I went with 5.2, because the room the system is located in is really too small for 7.x. Now I have two extra speakers I can use elsewhere.
  13. It has been a long time since I've played Sacred 2. I would have to make sure I had all the same Mods loaded as the rest of the players, but would be interested in joining in if it is determined there is stila way to play co-op.
  14. I cannot speak about the legality of the card in heaven or hell, but I do know that Hasbro sent him a cease and desist which he was successfully able to ignore because the card is a parody of the Monopoly game card.
  15. I used to work retail years ago and found some cards that helped me ignore most of the idiots. I can't give you a card (I order them by the thousands!), but I can give you the link I order them from. Perhaps just seeing the front AND back of the cards will help a little: goohf.com Hope you enjoy them.
  16. I'm just glad it didn't actually cost six million! Yeah, I've even been driving recently which makes my wife happy and seems really weird that I don't have to wear glasses anymore. It is a bit annoying that I now have to wear glasses to read or use my computers, though ...
  17. Encouraged to see that my initial post seems to be having some positive effect on others. Best of luck, gogo.
  18. No financing. Had to pay the difference up front before they would operate. Evidently, they got stiffed once too often. Them: "Pay us." Patient: "No, what are you going to do, take my eye back?"
  19. I have had one-day and one-week after surgery visits for both eyes. When I go in for the one-month visit for the right eye, they will check them both. I haven't heard anything about needing any further visits, but will try to remember to ask. For the amount they charge, they need to make sure I'm happy. Evidently, my left eye could handle a partial focus lens, but the right had to be fixed, though I was hoping to get a fully focusing lens for both eyes.
  20. The surgery cost $3,000.00 for my left eye because they used a special lens that allows me to focus a little more than a fixed focal lens. The right eye was $1,700.00 since they could evidently only use a fixed focal length lens. This was AFTER insurance paid their share. Luckily I'd been saving towards it, so wasn't too worried about it. I will now always need glasses for 'close' work, but a pair of 'reading' glasses can be purchased over-the-counter almost anywhere for $1.00 a pair. I'm going to get a prescription pair of reading glasses next year though. My insurance allows me to get a new pair of glasses once a year, so I may as well.
  21. I've had both my eyes 'sand-blasted' to remove cataracts and I went from 20/400 vision to 20/20. My vision is also a lot clearer. From being a dirty grey/yellow washed out tone, the entire world is now bright and clear. I started calling my left eye 'Bleach' after the first operation, since 'the whites were so much brighter and clearer'. I'm a little disappointed. I told the surgeon I wanted 20/10 vision just like I used to have when wearing glasses and flying. Ah well, at least I don't need to wear glasses when driving anymore. Unfortunately, I now need to wear 'cheaters' when reading or using my computer. The doctor wanted to give me long distance vision in my left eye and short distance vision in my right, which would have allowed me to go without glasses for most applications. Unfortunately, my right eye is the one I aim with ... I must say, the procedure was a bit uncomfortable. They wanted me awake while they operated on each eye, so I was completely aware of what was going on the entire time. The first thing they did was insert plastic retainers which kept my eyelid and any surrounding eyelashes out of the area. I couldn't have blinked my eye if I had wanted to. Fortunately, they operated on one eye at a time or I would have gone bonkers! Hopefully, this will mean that I'm online more, even if I do need glasses now. If anyone is contemplating laser surgery, I highly recommend it if you can manage it. It's an outpatient procedure and everything completely heals up within a month. I was comfortable seeing as soon as I got home and the dilation wore off.
  22. Welcome back again. I just tried to login a little while ago and couldn't and then saw that you posted on Facebook you would be back in an hour ... one hour ago. I tried again, and here I am. Hope it wasn't anything serious.
  23. Seems to me I used to be able to play on a LAN with someone on the same network. It's been so long since I've played, though, you might be better off waiting for someone with more recent information. I'm posting mainly because I'm also interested and want to be notified when someone replies.
  24. So, how aggressive is the AI? Will it wipe me out if I sneeze at the wrong time?
