My wife tells me jerky is dried beef. Cooked? Raw? Rare? But 'dried' ! sounds inedible. Isn't that the stuff settlers used to chew in the West or Alaska when the going was tuff?

 

Have pity on a poor foreigner and enlighten or otherwise convince me.
