I did some calculations, drawings and walks last 4 days. My second job is to look for a nearby forest. The forest owner is a bit conservative and (having enough money) not looking for a fast money gain. There was some discussion if he wanted to jump on the energy train: doing large wind rotors or sun energy, or going for fast growing trees for the large amount of wood fired buildings, or doing something totally different.

So I calculated a 150 year project. Ever did a 150 year project? It is a very strange feeling that not even your grandchildren will see the result. Doing fast growing needle trees (spruce/douglasie) to cover the ground quickly. So no bushes, thorny plants will pop up. Between the needle trees leaf carrying trees will be planted: oak, beech, checker tree (Elsbeere), ...

The pattern for planting is following the terrain. The fast growers leave enough light for the slow growers but not for other plants. In 20-30 years the fast growers will be chopped so the slow growers can cover more ground in the next century(ies).

So sun light at different tree sizes, transport and access ways had to be calculated. And in 150 years: climate may change so a mix of more or less heat loving trees has to be done. 2161, that would be even 10 years after th maiden flight of the Enterprise of Startrek. Weird feelings doing the calculations for the trees and what will be in 150 years.

That is even a longer time frame than planting a tree when marrying so that the grandchildren will have a tree house- as my family did for 5 generations now. Reading a 160 old diary from my ancestors: planting trees at the south hill. In 150 years they will give good masts for sailing ships.

150 years ... My ancestor probably noticed the steam ships which popped up in his lifetime after he planted the trees, so I wonder if there would be any need for 150 year old trees in future and if yes; what kind?

That's an awesome job and profeesion! Is this something you'd always wanted to do? Did you dance since young, perhaps competitively after? My Uncle and Aunt were championship ballroom dancers and now teach in Great Britain.

I'm fascinated and so happy for you!

:)

Today is name day of Saint Barbara. At my army time she was the saint patron of powder magazines, french and spain did even name them santabarbaras, related also for miners, ...

There is an old tradition to cut branches from cherry or other fruit trees on her name day. If you put them in a vase abd at a warm place in your house, they will blossom at x-mas which will bring luck to the coming year. ANother tradition is that if a girl likes more than one boy she will pick a branch for everyone and whose branch is blossoming best she will marry the following year, ... Some girls used to tie different coloured ribbons to the branches and often the branches together looked like a tree when they were blossoming at x-mas. This tradition probably let to nowadays x-mas tree in germany.

Why the cutting of barbara branches started can be read on this english page: http://theramblingamateur.blogspot.com/2010/12/saint-barbara-branches.html

Since our company is working with explosives we used to put barbara branches at the companies entrance hall, just in case you know ;) Today is sunday so I will cut the branches now when I am out with the dog. I use to do the branches I would cut away anyway to thin out the crown of a tree.

So if you are a girl and want to marry, search a cherry tree today...

City of Koblenz

Hope Saint Barbara protects the fireworkers who are called to disarm a 4000 pound blockbuster bomb found at low water in rhine river. 45000 people evacuated...

Just wanted to re-post this vid of a guy climbing a tower...it's not me but part of what I do at my job (original vid was pulled from youtube)

A 1768' climb just to change a light bulb?!?! ;)

My first serious thought was:climbing and standing on rebar==ouch. I would have expected to see more sway, being that far up the tower. I guess since most of the time all you saw was the tower itself, which was also swaying, it just did not show up.

I've actually climbed towers where the sway was so bad you'd only climb when it swayed away from you and then hang on as it went the other way :o We had some bad t-stroms roll through the last couple days so I've been spending a lot of time on water tanks. Today I was on a small one (maybe 75' high) when I noticed the coax conduit end cap was dislodged. I went to re-secure it (the last thing I need is a pipe filled with water) when I noticed something move. Not sure what this little guy is thinking. Usually don't see frogs this high up :)

Well, boss, I have no clue what your financial situation is, nor your job, but if it interests you that much, you can have your gemologist appraissers license for $3,200.00. There are a variety of online courses. What I recommend is the online course from ISG. There are 8 courses; Intro to watches, a pearl course, a diamond course, colored gemstones, gem tools and techniques, jewelry insurance appraisal, synthetic gems, and evaluating damaged jewelry. You get all types of fun little toys,as well. The final exam is a 100 true/false questions, passing grade is 70%. Then, there's a 20 stone practical exam that gets mailed to you. Now, I mean absolutely no disrespect to you, but you have two options. You could a) wish you had done something when you were younger, or b) research and do it. People say all the time to me "man, I wish I had a job like yours. You spend all day looking at, selling, and talking about gemstones. If I would have only....." Well, you can; there's no time like the present. Money isn't an issue; there's loans available. Age is not an issue, you will never again be as young as you are this very minute. The only thing holding you back is you. Now, if you say " I don't want to actually BE a gemologist, I just like looking at them", quartz like what I'm holding, together, would cost you roughly $180. The quartz cluster by the heel of my hand is roughly a pound, which runs about $120. The other gem cluster would be about $40, and the single quartz would be $20. Sorry about how fuzzy the picture came out, I never would have thought that my Alienware camera wouldn't be as good as my cellphone camera.

Now, just cuz I'm in a typing mood, I can't sell the actual gems in the picture. If my comp camera wasn't so crappy, you'd see why. These three pieces are the cornerstone of my private collection. The large cluster has a nugget of pure amethyst right in the middle. The small cluster by my fingertips that's distorted are in a lovers formation, which is rare to find. What that means is there are two large quartz, almost identical in size, side by side in a quartz bed. And the quartz pointed towards my thumb has amazingly clarity for its size. The picture is deceptive due to how big my hands are, but that bugger is the size of an average man's thumb. It's so clear that I can read print right through it without distortion. Normally, you get that type of clarity only with man-made quartz, which is called lead quartz. I'm sure that my quartz is real, though, because I mined it myself. Anyway, gogo, the chioce is up to you. But if you love gems as I love gems, $3200 will be the best investment you'll ever make, it's the best move I ever made. I never imagined a career so fun and so fulfilling that it felt like I should be paying someone for the opportunity to do it instead of getting paid to do something I love

Strange, I HAD pictures up. I guess someone disliked them :)

The pix didn't display here? Are you trying to upload them?

Your info about the skulls is awesome! I'd love to see this, specially as you created it. Was thinking about picking up Akroyd's new (silly?) skull vodka as a gift for a birthday. I saw it at the Alcohol store near us, SO expensive, and I'm not even sure I could tell the difference.

:)

I remember seeing a pic of him holding a cool looking crystal skull in his hand. I assumed he removed it for some reason but obviously he didn't.

Here ya go, no clue what went wrong w the pics. Now, the Crystal Head Vodka......saw it on a site that I used to buy crystal skulls from. It's expensive, not only for obvious reasons, but it's perhaps the smoothest Vodka I've ever had

This ole boy is fake, it's the one I talked about that I made from rock salt. Now, the real deal........ god, in just my personal collection, I have enough gems and skulls to have my own "Gem of the day" topic and keep it going for atleast a month. Now, if I'm allowed to post links, I can tell you about one reliable site I used to get skulls from. The only reason why I stopped getting them is because I got interested in raw gems.

Now, here's the kind of pain in the butt aspect that comes with gemology; any rock you find could potentially contain something fun, whether it be gem or semi-precious minerals. Like this little gal. I tripped over this rock in Madegascar. I was gunna chuck it, but thought "what if......" and, well, the photograph speaks for itself. A little quartz bed or calcite could be at the center of any rock

I have an sd card now, so I can post all types of fun little pictures, like this smoky quartz. I know an auctioneer who once had a lapidary sale for an old man who died and ad a whole house filled with raw gems and minerals. I told him that a gemologist appraiser wouldn't do him much good because a) half of what I was seeing were minerals, which is not my specialty b) why appraise gems when they're just going to sell to the highest bidder anyway, and c) I could just identify them, but it would take me all day and to justify me shutting down shop, it would have to cost him atleast $1000.00, and that's a "good friend" rate. He asked if I was a gambling man and told me I could have any gem left over, in place of the thousand buck fee. Of course I jumped on it. The only friggin thing left in the house was this white gallon bucket of dirt. I saw a few broken pieces of minerals on the top, so thought "hey, what if there's something valuable in there?". So, I sifted through this disgustiing bucket of dirt, busted rock, tobacco spit, busted minerals, glass, dead spiders, old band aids, and found virtually nothing. So, I set the bucket downstairs, and thought "hey, ya win some, ya lose some". That night , the border collie knocked the bucket over chasing the cats. On the very bottom of this bucket were several smoky quartz such as this one. At first, I thought they were fake or just gross glass, but nope, the dog earned me more than a few days wages
