Action: Pirates of the Carribean/JamesBond/Indiana Jones :bye:

Sci-Fi: Startrek

Fantasy: Lotr

Historical Action: The three muskateers or something like that(exact name eludes me, but its about them)/Fearless

War Movie: D-day (I think its called) or maybe where eagles dare

Regarding Mystic River...woah..the last twenty minutes of that film is one of the most chilling I think ever put on celluloid (hey do they even use that anymore :drunkards:)

Spoiler alert!:

Down by the river...they get him drunk...then Sean penn starts to ask him the qestion...my stomach crawlecd up into my throat I think...I was like...omg...no, no no...what can he do..he is SOOOOO Bleeped!

Man, writing this down is making me rembmer more...his wife...all alone...whilst everyone cheering at the parade.

So many movies, so many choices. How to decide on favorites:)

Historical:

- Divided We Fall (Musíme si pomáhat) [2000] Really an awesome movie that depicts real people, not one-dimensional, altruistic heroes.

- Shakespeare in Love [1998] An amusing, if not particularly historically-accurate, movie that gives you a bit of a feel for the time period and an appreciation for the play Romeo and Juliet.

Strange:

- Memento [2000] Filmed in short segments in reverse-chronological order, this is a somewhat chilling tale about a guy who can no longer make new memories.

- Being John Malkovich [1999] When I saw this movie in the theaters in 1999 I remarked that this was the weirdest, most unique movie I had ever seen. It is difficult to describe but essentially the main characters find a mechanism whereby they can be John Malkovich for short periods of time . . . and they sell access. Written by Charlie Kaufman, who is also responsible for two other good but strange movies . . . Adaptation and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

- Stranger Than Fiction [2006] Seems like the kinda thing Charlie Kaufman would write, a strange tale about the main character in a book who can hear the author writing the book about his imminent death.

Romantic Comedies:

- Notting Hill [1999] Not the best movie or the best-acted film ever, but I really like it anyway, so bite me. :) Good dialogue and good chemistry, the characters feel more real to me than many in this genre.

- Love Actually [2003] A series of intersecting love stories.

- Four Weddings and a Funeral [1994] No, I don't have a thing for Hugh Grant, I just like his romantic comedies.

- When Harry Met Sally [1989] A classic romantic comedy with some classic lines and scenes.

Fantasy:

- Lord of the Rings [2001-3] of course! Epic fantasy, well acted, beautiful scenery and music, just spectacular.

- The Princess Bride [1987] A classic fairy tale, but includes one of the best sword fights in any movie I have ever seen. It is almost as if two people who actually know how to fence are fighting . . .

- Harry Potter [2001-7] An enjoyable series, especially if one has read the books. If not, then perhaps not so much so. Unlike LotR, you really are at a huge disadvantage if you aren't familiar with the source.

Science Fiction:

- Star Wars [1977] An epic adventure, this film redefined the way movies are made in a way that few others, before or after, have done. The first PG movie I ever saw and the first I ever saw twice in the theater. The Empire Strikes Back was a good sequel, but the franchise started to go downhill with Return of the Jedi (a bit fluffy) and was not served well by either the re-mastering or the prequels.

- Close Encounters of the Third Kind [1977] How could you not like a movie in which the main character makes a model of Devil's Tower out of mashed potatoes?

Action/Adventure

- Raiders of the Lost Ark [1981] Non-stop action, reminiscent of the cliff-hangers from an earlier age. The later installments in the series paled in comparison and the new one coming out soon will probably bite.

- Die Hard [1988] Everything an action/adventure movie should be. Automatic weapons, a tank, plastic explosives, missile launchers, it is all good. The follow-ups pretty well bit.

- Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Wo hu cang long) [2000] An awesome movie on every level. The cinematography is to die for, and the story and acting are first rate. The fight between Ziyi Zhang and Michelle Yeoh is the :D

- Casino Royale [2006] This is what James Bond movies are supposed to be like. Lots of action, reasonable believability, not so much camp.

Documentary:

- Super Size Me [2004] You gotta see this. The only real issue I have is that he stopped exercising. I think the movie would have been more powerful if the only change he had made was what he was eating. Still, pretty scary!

- Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room [2005] Very interesting film about the Enron collapse and various other goings-on of the time.

- The Queen [2006] Interesting semi-documentary on the death of Princess Diana and how Tony Blair and the Royals handled it.

Comedy:

This is a huge category and I've been very selective here.

- Airplane! [1980] So full of gags, and such a high percentage of them hit home. Uses a style that has been endlessly emulated.

- Pink Panther [1963] An excellent mix of slap stick, French accents, and kung fu. The best of the rest: A Shot in the Dark, Return of the Pink Panther, Pink Panther Strikes Again.

- Life of Brian [1979] and the Holy Grail [1975] The two best of the Monty Python movies. Wholly irreverant looks at history.

- 40 Year Old Virgin [2005] The first movie in a long while to remind me of the classic comedies of the 80's. Just overflowing with humor.

- Bad Santa [2003] Santa like you've never seen him before, and never hope to again. :P

Ok baby steps, now you have 27 movies. Imagine its the end of the world, and you can save the world by destroying 20 of these titles. Oh you will do it you are THE hero.

Now, 7 left. Oh no, you get some weird disease by destroying those 20 excellent movies! Wait, the magic wizard appear and ask you to give up 6 of these titles for THE cure. You want to live now do you?

So which title you will have in the end?

:):D:P

Ike: The Movie :)

Patient I: What's it doctor?

Doctor M: Ah, I regret to inform you that I'm incapable of curing you.

Patient I: I won't believe it!

Doctor M: I'm sorry. If only science has improved two generations, if only...

Patient I: There must be something that we can do.

Docotr M: My hands are tied. But my prayers are with you wherever you go.

The end. :D

Almost.. :)

I can fence better than them, but it doesn't look as good in films if its for real

hmmm, never heard of this...will google

- Shakespeare in Love [1998] An amusing, if not particularly historically-accurate, movie that gives you a bit of a feel for the time period and an appreciation for the play Romeo and Juliet.

ahh, more shakespeare, ya think you can leave it forgotten but it keeps cropping up..okay will give this a go :P

Strange:

- Memento [2000] Filmed in short segments in reverse-chronological order, this is a somewhat chilling tale about a guy who can no longer make new memories.

I've heard a TON about this movie and always kept meaning to see this. The way this was filmed is supposed to be so confusing but unbelievably brilliant...and hey, wasn't this the same director who did The Prestige? Good man.

Wow, what a cool idea!. lol, I"ve never actually seen the decription for this movie said like that but I rembmer for a while all my "artsy" friends couldn't stop talkin about this. What a strange idea!

- Stranger Than Fiction [2006] Seems like the kinda thing Charlie Kaufman would write, a strange tale about the main character in a book who can hear the author writing the book about his imminent death.

Interesting and a bit scary? Will try and find a trailer.

Romantic Comedies:

- Notting Hill [1999] Not the best movie or the best-acted film ever, but I really like it anyway, so bite me. :P Good dialogue and good chemistry, the characters feel more real to me than many in this genre.

*cough*

...right

...

- Love Actually [2003] A series of intersecting love stories.

- Four Weddings and a Funeral [1994] No, I don't have a thing for Hugh Grant, I just like his romantic comedies.

This was supposed to be a superb movie. Shame on me for not watching this. I promise I'll see it mom I promise...

- When Harry Met Sally [1989] A classic romantic comedy with some classic lines and scenes.

ONe of the best movies ever. I've seen this movie a ton of times and each time it's perfect. This movie SO hits it on the head about who was wrong and who was right. K, we won't go ther to often okay?

:Just_Cuz_12:

Cheers to Rob Reiner.

Fantasy:

- Lord of the Rings [2001-3] of course! Epic fantasy, well acted, beautiful scenery and music, just spectacular.

Pefect movie

Nuff said.

- The Princess Bride [1987] A classic fairy tale, but includes one of the best sword fights in any movie I have ever seen. It is almost as if two people who actually know how to fence are fighting . . .

Another pefect movie and here's the thing...

The book is even better. The torture scene in the book has a remarkably intelligent conversation between torturer and torturee...adam and eve...So...what exactly was that first fruit?

Answer:

Pain

;)

Recommended viewing on this movie AND recommened reading.

- Harry Potter [2001-7] An enjoyable series, especially if one has read the books. If not, then perhaps not so much so. Unlike LotR, you really are at a huge disadvantage if you aren't familiar with the source.

The movies are entertaining fare and so are the books. Hey, does everyone rembmer the first time they read a potter book and realized we were at the birth of seomthing wonderful? Well, I'm going to carry that memory with me. :)

Stood up in my seat jumping, cheering, hooting...Loved the original series...man...what happenned to it? Gak!

:Just_Cuz_12:

- Close Encounters of the Third Kind [1977] How could you not like a movie in which the main character makes a model of Devil's Tower out of mashed potatoes?

LOVED THIS! And that huge bass hoot from the final spaceship always blows out my subs...AWESOME!

Action/Adventure

- Raiders of the Lost Ark [1981] Non-stop action, reminiscent of the cliff-hangers from an earlier age. The later installments in the series paled in comparison and the new one coming out soon will probably bite.

Another one fer me which was a super up yee haw live kinda thing...and that beginning...it just didn't let you go...and still up in the air...snakes! loooooooool!

- Die Hard [1988] Everything an action/adventure movie should be. Automatic weapons, a tank, plastic explosives, missile launchers, it is all good. The follow-ups pretty well bit.

I thought when I saw this movie it was one of the best things I'd ever seen on film. That first explosion was unbelieavale. Tight editing. Great photography, whole japanese building thing, good looking/scary as prada terrorist team. The list of goodies on this film is too long to list here. Let's just all make sher we see it.

- Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (Wo hu cang long) [2000] An awesome movie on every level. The cinematography is to die for, and the story and acting are first rate. The fight between Ziyi Zhang and Michelle Yeoh is the :Just_Cuz_12:

Friggin Awesome movie. I still keep watching it and this movie has SO much more than meets the eye. It's a fight for the right to an existential Freedom.

No Limits

Richard Bach redux a la japanese... Deluxe!

- Casino Royale [2006] This is what James Bond movies are supposed to be like. Lots of action, reasonable believability, not so much camp.

SPOILER!

Well, I'm gonna say that I didn't care much for this Bond. And ya know I THOUGHT I was after I saw that cool face and expressions and mannerisms...but after a while I realized that I wasn't really "feeling" for him a a nice, funny guy. This bond looked, felt and absolutley acted like a cold ruthless assassin. IN fact...for the first time ever...I thik a bond frightened me lol! Anyway...the movie's dialogue was pretty good and that final scene with the water and elevator to a watery hell and all...how cool was that?

Documentary:

- Super Size Me [2004] You gotta see this. The only real issue I have is that he stopped exercising. I think the movie would have been more powerful if the only change he had made was what he was eating. Still, pretty scary!

hahahah...ewwwwwwww...lol/ewwwwwwwww...ew, lololol..

oh yeah after I laughted a lot I realized I was walking away scared. You will NEVER look at your frenchi fries the same way again. :4rofl:

- Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room [2005] Very interesting film about the Enron collapse and various other goings-on of the time.

er...I buy stock btw...

*cough*

:)

...next...

- The Queen [2006] Interesting semi-documentary on the death of Princess Diana and how Tony Blair and the Royals handled it.

Just saw this. She Rocks. I don't think I've ever really connected to her in a movie before and that made it even that much better. It's funny cuz...at the end..she broke my heart...I was actually rooting for her NOT to put the flag down!

Comedy:

This is a huge category and I've been very selective here.

- Airplane! [1980] So full of gags, and such a high percentage of them hit home. Uses a style that has been endlessly emulated.

Never saw but I know it's one of the most copied movies around for ideas. Another on the will see list.

- Pink Panther [1963] An excellent mix of slap stick, French accents, and kung fu. The best of the rest: A Shot in the Dark, Return of the Pink Panther, Pink Panther Strikes Again.

This is potentially the funniest made series of movies ever made...perhaps with the exception of scary movies?

hmm, no...pink panther still rules.. :Just_Cuz_12:

- Life of Brian [1979] and the Holy Grail [1975] The two best of the Monty Python movies. Wholly irreverant looks at history.

Hysterical

- 40 Year Old Virgin [2005] The first movie in a long while to remind me of the classic comedies of the 80's. Just overflowing with humor.

I'll see this this week, I know it's gonna be a winner :D

- Bad Santa [2003] Santa like you've never seen him before, and never hope to again. :P

lol, we getcha ike ;)

...and good we only see this kind of a santa once in our lifetimes :P

Love this thread and Ike I had an amazing time revisiting all these movies again.
