F D M - Facebook Darkmatters

Recommended Posts

Our little community had fallen out of step with the rest of the netizens, and one of the big benefits of of this upgrade to ipb 3.1 was also all the nifty potential for sharing with other places. I'm kind of happy with what's in place now, and after some BLEEp and a bit of *(&*&^%%%...we're all feeling better and it looks like we have some new functionality. Some of it's a little buggy, but Schot's gonna have to pass his magic wand when he awakens from his torpor of working on the wiki dbases and this forums till close to 5.00 am this morning (lol, actually it looked like there was a good number of us on this morning too ^^) . Okay, new stuffs. I've done some testing, but it would help if others could test with their facebook accounts as well, just to make sure our site to Facebook are correct, and that the two databases can properly shake hands if you're interested in this. 1-Facebook Connect is now in place. If you look at the top right of the screen you'll see a tiny little Facebook icon. If you click on that, it'll let you merge your Facebook account with your Darkmatters account. I actually was stuck on it for about an hour trying to figger out how to finally make it through and I have some hints for us, just until Schot can redesign the login page. When you opt to punch in through the facebook icon your next page will be split in two. Left side is what you use if you don't have a darkmatters account and are coming to us from Facebook... fill in that part of the screen and it will let you choose whether or not you want to use your real facebook name or make up a nic. The right side of the page is for peeps that ALREADY have Darkmattters accounts., and that's the part I guess most of us will use...now here is the tricky part. The page is not properly showing the two fields that MUST be filled in for both sides

  • Where did you hear about us from - fill in anything
  • Do you like your snow hot or cold - cold (Duh :P)

It's kinda tricky getting to those fields, but the moment you see them it's a snap. Those two fields MUST be filled in for this merging of accounts to work. Another tricky part is, like me, if you already have an account here at darkmatters, it's going to ask you for two fields to be filled in across the right of the split screen...

  • your email here on Darkmatters
  • password here on DarkMatters

In my case, for some reason my email wasn't allowing me to process. It could have been because it was actually a forwarder I was using, and perhaps Facebook doesn't want to merge with that for security. I then changed my email on this forum to the same one I am using on my facebook. Bingo...FllooOOP I was in. The coolest thing about all this is.. logging into the forum is cinch now... all you have to do is click on your facebook icon, and if you've saved it, just one click drops you into the middle of our forum. And also now, Facebook Like buttons are working. They're at the bottom of every post. I'm not sure how like really works in Facebook , lol, I'm not a big facebook user, so I don't know what's supposed to happen when I do it. If someone can try it out to see if it is actually working? And finally, the reputation system is slowly coming into place. We have always believed it's far easier to make someone feel bad or offer negativity rather than work a little extra harder and find the way to say it in a positive way. So... FDM's rep system is ONLY comprised of positive points. You can assign rep points to a post that you think was extraordinary, or to assign respect to someone's time in putting together a meaningful, well-written piece of prose, or guide...anything actually, just to show appreciation. I've been hunting all day now for another part of this hack (it will not evade me long! :viking:) that adds the REAL magic to what we want our rep system to be...it will, at he moment you assign positive rep, also spawn a field for a comment. That comment is an exclusive rep comment field, and members here will be able to collect them as they receive more rep and good words. Everyone on this forum gets only 3 rep points per day... so use them wisely ^^ And here we go! :) gogo

What's that about FDM posting news items on my FB page?

I've read through the things I give permission for by using the linked system, but there is a lot of stuff that's pretty invasive. I don't mind linking up even though I just started my FB account this week, but what exactly are you planning on using it for?

I'm not sure yet lol. I don't often use the darkmatters account, so nothing much coming through now. This is all pretty new for us, and wiki and forum and playing game take up so much time... fb is coming in a very distant tenth for updates.

:)

Glad you were able to get it going! I'm slowly getting used to this forum's rep system, I am finding that everytime when I assign a rep point I add a message to someone's profile with a thank you note for the post with explanation of why I gave a point it's cool.

We'll still keep lookng for that hack, nothing out there so far beats it, and who knows...maybe we'll have awards for highest rep points or something every few months?

You would have to reset the rep points then every time if you planned that. Also, I wonder how many people actually assign the points to make it worthwhile...?
