Arghh... New Private-Messages System Is Painful

Recommended Posts

Heya,

I never really got any problem with the new version of the forum... except this new private-message-discussion system.

I don't remind the previous "bugs" I experienced with it, but today I got one more, and I don't understand it :

- Yesterday I send a PM to Barris

- Yesterday I got an anwser to this PM and a notification on main page of the forum

When I clicked on the link "personnal conversation", I got the message as usual without any problems.

- Today I get a new answer to this PM and a notification on main page of the forum too

But surprise when I clicked on "personnal conversation", the answer of yesterday had disappeared, and no track of the message I got today.

I just noticed this :

Barristan

Has left the conversation

Hopefully, a copy of this message was waiting me in my mailbox.

I also remind, sometimes, when I get a PM, I can't even answer to it, I can just "Delete" or "Compose New Message". Instead of "Reply" button, there is a "You cannot reaply" button. :(

Please, What I can do to avoid this kind of inconvenience in the future ?

I had a quick look and noticed the "You Cannot Reply" as well. It looks like that happens when the person you are messaging deletes the conversation.

While we are on the topic of PM's, does anyone know if you can address a PM to more than one person?

Oh it's complicated for sure. I agree. ^^ DragonBro covered the mystery of "You Cannot Reply" very well. As for disappearing PMs from others that may be a result of the sender deleting a post of theirs within the conversation rather than removing the whole conversation from their messenger. I can see how this can be confusing and if someone sends you a PM that you find important then I would suggest you quote their response in your following reply so as to maintain the content you want inside of your own reply. The option of deleting a post in a conversation can be a very handy tool if it actually works th way I think. Could save you from an embarrasing PM that you might want to retract. ^^

As for the rest I really haven't tested closely yet. Here's a tip though in regards to the drop down menu that is beside your name with a number on it. Notifications. It's basically a "View New Content" but for your forum messenger. A short cut to go straight to recent messages sent to you.

Notifications is a part of Messages sent to you but it is not it's sole purpose. In the past it would have been referred to as Subscriptions. The controls for Notifications is found in your personal settings that you can reach by clicking on your name at the top right of the forum here and choosing "settings" from the drop down menu. On the page that loads you'll see Notification Options in the left menu. From there you'll see just how complex Notifications can be:

  • Topics & Posts

    • Notification method to use for new topics and topic digests
    • Notification method to use for topic replies and reply digests
    • Notify me when someone quotes my posts

    [*]Status Updates

    • Notify me of replies to my status updates
    • Notify me of replies to status updates I have replied to
    • Notify me when one of my friends updates their status

    [*]Profiles & Friends

    • Notify me of comments made on my profile
    • Notify me of comments made on my profile pending approval
    • Notify me when someone adds me as a friend
    • Notify me when I have a pending friend request
    • Notify me when someone approves a friend request I make

    [*]Private Messages

    • Notify me when I receive a new personal conversation
    • Notify me of replies to my personal conversations
    • Notify me when I am invited to a personal conversation

    [*]Other Notifications

    • Notify me of reported content
    • Notify me of new comments

I was finding this new PM system painful as well. There are too many options, and the simple elegance of the PM system was swept away by IPB for a very huge, tentacular system which kind of evades me at time.

I found a simple solution. All the problems were happening because of notifications, and my attempt to reconcile notifications with the messages... answer? I just turned pm notifications off.

Now...I only see a number change at the top left of my name. Very clear, simple to read.. and I'm back to the old PM system

Hurrah

:)

p.s. And did you guys notice...that the forward pm button has been taken out? ... sigh...

heh, no worries. I use a ton of pms, and this was like a kick in the patooteys. Getting the system slimmed down to just pms got me back into the swing of things again. Glad yer back on your pm feet again!

:)
