cider_steve 26
Hi. Has anyone got a 3DS ? I was just wondering if they are any good and if they are worth the money ? I am quite tempted at getting one with the Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of time game. Can't quite justify it atm though.............hmmm. Just doesn't feel quite right spending £170 on the 3DS and then another £30 on the game. I question if there will be enough games to justify buying the 3DS and if the console is up to it. I've read pretty mixed reviews for it so far. I also wonder if the games themselves are all that much. For the time being, I'll keep my wallet closed, until I find that it is 99% worth the cost. ( I can live with the 1% doubt !) Steve. Link to comment
Stormwing 40
Hmh, there sure are some interesting titles, mostly remakes and stuff coming up. But that's later. Only one or two of the launch ones piqued my interest, so I'll prolly get it once it gets tad cheaper. Can't really afford something like that atm. All in all, an interesting console. But so is PS Vita. Choices, choices... Link to comment
Delta! 985
2 of my housemates (they are brothers) both have a 3DS, and they are AWESOME :trans:. the augmented reality is soooooo cool and the AR card games are very good too. I'll find out which ones are worth it, but all in all, my opinion it is totally worth buying one! Link to comment
Dragon Brother 619
I've heard that the 3d causes headaches for a lot of people and that the battery life is completely terrible on the 3DS. I have no plans to buy one, but if I did would probably wait for a 2nd gen device which gives them a chance to iron out any kinks. Link to comment
cider_steve 26
Thanks guys for your thoughts. I think on reflection that I might hold fire for a bit. Tempting as it is, I think I'd be wasting my dosh for a gadget that I probably wouldn't enjoy on a long term basis. Steve. Link to comment

Don't listen to us...we could all be a bunch of misers But perhaps buying it for only one game makes it a little less worthwhile. Link to comment
gogoblender 3,042
handsome looking game, but if I had a decent cellphone, apps out there are already offering competition for older hand held platforms? gogo Link to comment
Stormwing 40
DB: Have heard about those. Also, not recommended for very young kids, as the 3D could somehow affect the eye developement. Or so I've heard. Nothing to worry for me. And 3D without glasses is a win. Can't really say how those goggles would add up with glasses... Gogo: Would get one purely for the games. The other apps aren't for me. And I doubt the web-properties would work around here... My phone's doing those things. Link to comment
stubbie 21
Just bought myself a 3DS and I love it! I have Zelda: The Ocarina of Time http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfvcyT8WR8c&feature=related Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars and an older DS game, Dragon Quest IX You cannot get the 3d effect from the videos unfortunately. The only handheld console I have had was an old Gameboy. But I didn't like it and gave it to one of my daughters after only a few days. But I love my Nintendo 3DS. The 3D effects are amazing. Though you do have to hold the 3DS at a certain distance and angle for it to work properly. That can be adjusted for each individual though and I don't find it be be major hindrance at all. The touch screen, the stereo sound, the widescreen, the ability to access the internet and with a 3DS game you can pause the game and go to the net and get hints while you play. Also I find the new circle pad (it's like a joystick) a great addition and very welcome when it comes to using it to control your characters movement. I can now game in every room at home and you gotta appreciate that. The 3 games I have so far are absolutely fantastic. Zelda is an old Nintendo 64 game but it has been remade for the 3DS and the conversion is nothing short of brilliant. Ghost Recon is a game in some ways similar to the old X-Com series which I was a big fan of. In fact one of the developers of the X-Com games was involved in Ghost Recon. I just love strategic turn based rpg combat games. And while Dragon Quest IX was not designed for the 3DS it plays fine on it and it is a great game for people that like the Japanese style of rpg games,,,,and that's me. So just to reiterate.......I love my Nintendo 3DS! Edited September 30, 2011 by stubbie Link to comment
Dragon Brother 619
Its funny that you post in this thread stubbie, because I've recently purchased a phone with a 3d screen...waiting for it to arrive, but I've played with one and I must say that I agree with you on the 3d effects, its totally awesome! podgie_bear 184
I would wait and see if you can physically try one out in a shop first, because not everyone is able to cope with 3D. We went to an electrical retailer to see about a 3D television and found that although my wife thought it looked great, I was unable to see the pictures at all. It seems that the stignmatism in my eyes means that I am unable to combine the layers projected onto the screen into a single 3D picture. I actually see the different layers which makes seeing the intended picture a nightmare and gave me headache a to try. I consulted my optician and was told that I am not the only one to have that problem. So try before you buy mate, or you may end up with a very expensive paperweight! Link to comment
stubbie 21
So try before you buy mate, or you may end up with a very expensive paperweight! Your comments about the 3D effect are very true Podgie. Definitely if a person has a problem with viewing 3D then they should be wary of getting the 3DS. Not so sure about the paperweight comment though. Because you are able to turn off the 3D effect whenever you like. For me the 3D effect was not the only reason I got it. I especially liked the joypad circle thingy that the 3DS has. It is far easier on my arthritis than the D Pad. The internet browser that shipped with the console was a definite plus. And I liked the fact that the 3DS was backward compatible with earlier DS games. If you already own a Nintendo DS and don't want 3D capability then probably getting a 3DS would be an expensive upgrade. But don't forget that the new 3DS games can be played (and look quite good I might add) without the 3D effect on the 3DS, but they cannot be played on the old Nintendo DS console. Link to comment
podgie_bear 184
Ah, thanks for the info Stubbie, I didn't know about being able to switch off the 3D. Link to comment
