EVE: Online

Recommended Posts

I just started playing EVE: Online a couple of months back, and I love it.

The game utilizes only one HUGE server which sometimes holds over 50000 players in one big universe.

It's a sci-fi game focusing mainly on the control of spaceships, and learning the skills to further your use of them.

When you start, you will be in your capsule. This capsule is your only armor against the cold vacuum of space.

Quite soon into the game though, you will be handed several spaceships to put your capsule inside and control.

If they are destroyed, you will find yourself again in the capsule, and then you have to get out of there.

When the capsule is destroyed, you will die.

There are 4 different races in the game: The Amarr, who uses lasers for the main arsenal, Minmatar, who uses projectile weapons, The Caldari, who uses Missile launchers, and the Gallente, who focuses mainly in the use of hybrid turrets.

There are alot of different space ships with different functions in EVE. For example:

- The Rookie ship is the first one you get when starting to play. Not much good for anything besides scouting an area.

- Frigates are the main light class attack ships in the game. Some can also be used for mining.

- Destroyers are fast, medium sized ships especially designed to hunt down frigates.

- Crusiers are rather slow, heavily armored ships used mainly as support and escorting.

- Battlecruisers are the same as above, only more badass.

- Battleships are heavy ships made to make total mincemeat of your enemy, often used for prolonged sieges.

- Industrial ships can involve haulers (cargo ships), mining barges made only for extracting ore from asteroids at a high rate, and salvagers, made for salvaging resources from shipwercks in space.

- Capital ships. These include freighers, drones carriers and titans. The biggest of the big.

They also vary greatly in size.

The smallest ship is about 60 meters long. The biggest class are Titan ships. Two of them can reach 18 km in length.

All of them takes alot of training time, and the training is real-time.

If I want to train in the use of a mining barge to level 5 (max level), it would take at least 15 days.

To train for the use of titan ships, you would have to train skills for 170 real days.

That being said, one of the main goals in EVE is to make money.

Either by:

- Mining asteroids for ore, which can be sold directly, refined into minerals, or be used to create spaceships and equipment.

- Salvaging blown-up spaceships for resources, which can be used as the same as above.

- Doing missions given to you by NPC agents in the spacestations.

- Joining a player Corporation (clan) and work for them for rewards.

- Become a pirate and shoot down spaceships for the loot.

The game is one of the most immense experiences one can have with a mmorpg.

While not as big player-wise as WoW, this game has only 1 big universe where all the players play side by side.

It has over 5000 star systems you can visist. A star system is a room in space where you can find asteroid belts and space stations.

It also has 2500 random placed wormholes where you can find some real valuable minerals, but also danger.

I'll try not to make this post too long, but it's simply impossible to describe EVE in short words.

You can download the game with a 14-day trial if you wish to try it out for yourself.

If you like sci-fi, you will NOT regret trying this game.

Sirius, such a great writeup, thanks for taking all that time :hugs: You know, when we all first started playing Ogame here years ago, I think it was Crunchie who first mentionned to me about this game called Eve. Just the name, I found, was intriguing. He began to explain, that it was all one server, impossible I remember replying! I remember that for Ogame, all the different servers and games there were all over the world, same thing for Guild Wars... I started doing a bit of readup about it, and then a player here, one of the highest ranked in all of Ogame, member of clan, said he's been playing it for years. That it was HUGElY addcitive... corporations, one of which he was a member of, run their own websites, and the level of detail was just mind-blowing.

Not tricks, he said...just, as you described, time for exact game time, to create value for all creations in the game, yeah, just like Sacred Franchise! (at least till sacred 3 huh :P) I remember me and Schot looking at the game's trailers...holeee molee, was all this actually in game footabe?

yeah, it was

Always the best graphics, unbelievable mechanics, and of course, at that time, it was also the most expensive mmo you could play...but was it ever beautiful! We both discussed it... and, at that time, we agreed that we wanted to keep working with the community here at DarkMatters. We'd made so many new friends, and forums were so new at that time, and just a free browser game like Ogame, had made DarkMatters a distinct gaming community with no yelling, flaming, lewd or lascivious commentary (:P) or flaming. Noone had thought this could happen, but FDM has thrived, and we finally got to here... another cross road...Diablo 3 or Guild Wars 3!~

But... yeah, in the back of my head, my dreams, always that game, EVE, so beautiful, but SO time consuming...

Now here's my pitch bro, muhahah...u gonna come play Guid Wars 3 or Diablo 3 with us?

This is invite!

I'd love to play Diablo 3, but I think it would have to be on my PS3.

My craptop can't handle newer games.

And thanks for the reply, Gogo.

I just had to take the time to write about Eve. It's too much fun to go unadvertised.

I only wish I had started playing it in 2003, so I would have a real badass character now.

Also, I forgot to mention that the whole market in Eve is player controlled.

Everything you see in the market is put there by another player.

Corporations mine, refine, manufacture and put items for sale to gain money and control.

There is also a uncharted cluster of star systems at the northeastern corner of the star-map.

This is said to be the home of the mysterious, technically superior and insidious Jovian race.

They are NPC only, except to a selected few. This suggests that some players have been invited to the Jovian empire.

Perhaps one day, they will break out of isolation and start a war against the rest of the known universe.

Feuding corporations and alliances would have to combine their forces to fight the invaders.

Wouldn't that be awesome?

The series can go anywhere. They are resolved. There one server says it all for integrity to their vision. Just knowing that makes your heart swell that you're using a point of view that's unique, immensely powerful, and boy, the graphics, They're easily the top three gaming in the world for space, if not the best...heck the trailers are all live!

heh, Scleameth, too much cofffee!
