Orphaned and Duplicate Pages

Recommended Posts

I'm starting this thread rather than continuing to pile on Knuckle's Page Typo thread. I was searching for Templates on the Wiki when I happened to notice there is a "Maintenance" link on the Wiki that lists pages that no other pages link to.

http://www.sacredwiki.org/index.php5?title=Special:LonelyPages&limit=250&offset=0

There are 171 such pages. :nono: I gave them a cursory look and while some are just personal test pages and some just need to be linked to, many others are duplicates that need to be deleted.

I'll be posting the duplicates here for review and deletion.

Here a few to start with:

http://www.sacredwiki.org/index.php/High_Elf_Enemy (true page exists here)

http://www.sacredwiki.org/index.php/Humanoid_Monster (true page exists here)

http://www.sacredwiki.org/index.php/Kral_of_the_Winged_Daemons (true page exists here)

http://www.sacredwiki.org/index.php/Sacred2:Shadow_Campaign_Quest (true page exists here)

Love the way you are doing the links here to page that needs to be deleted and then where the real page is. this allows for good verification as well.

I've deleted all the pages indicated, I'll keep monitoring this topic to keep up

Guys I can't believe I didn't catch this until now!

The Ice and Blood button on the Main Page didn't link to the real Ice Blood page.

Instead, it linked to a blank duplicate page called IceBlood. I fixed the link. Now that I'm looking at it I'm not even sure if the duplicate page actually "exists" anymore? But if it does it should be deleted.

EDIT: Same scenario for the Item Modifiers button. Text linked to the right page, but the button linked to a blank page. Corrected this one too.

omg, and I just worked on that, lol. Oh wow. When I was changing all the images from full url to wiki code I must have left some bits of text out of those two links. I was soooooo tired. I remember literally willing myself to push through until they were all done. Next time I think I'll just go to bed. :3lmao:

Nice catch Flix, thanx! good2.gif

http://www.sacredwiki.org/index.php/Sacred:Inquisition_Outpost_1 and http://www.sacredwiki.org/index.php/Sacred_2:Inquisition_Outpost_1 (both of these pages are duplicates of the true page which exists here)

http://www.sacredwiki.org/index.php/Sacred_2:Unpack_%28Shadow%29 (true page exists here)

http://www.sacredwiki.org/index.php/Sacred_2:Don%27t_Trust_Statistics_2 (true page exists here)

The above two are interesting because they involve walkthroughs that someone wrote but were never used. They became orphans and eventually duplicates once Knuckles did his versions of the quest pages. Still, they're redundant and I'd say inferior to the true pages, so they should probably be deleted.

Link to comment

Yeah... The reamaining orphans are tough ones. Those you link to are quite complicated in that we need to find a way to preserve the contributions of everyone involved. It's really making us think and may take a while to resolve.

Only 22 orphans now though!

That could be a goof on my part......sometimes the pages are hard to find if they are not linked to another page in the chain quest and/or have extra words like (Shadow) in the title. Sometimes the wiki search engine will not find the page even if you type the title exactly. Probably what happened here. I very rarely make my own version if there is already one in existance. I would have just updated that one to preserve the history.

Link to comment

Oh believe me I know how hard it's becoming to find things on the wiki. That search isn't the greatest. One of these days I'll see if Mediawiki offers a nicer one. Or see if I can configure the existing one a little better. No worries Knuckles!

Link to comment

Wasn't there a google search at one time on the left side of the wiki pages? That one seemed to work a whole lot better. Hate losing someone else's contribution to the page even if I completely re-do it...least their name is still in the History....and I very rarely do that unless the page was bare bones anyways. Maybe we could move my page to the other older one and fix the title. That way previous contributors would still be listed. I would do it myself but I can't for a little while.

Taking a break from wiki work for a little bit as my back probs have reared their ugly head again....nothing serious but sitting down for more than 15 minutes or so becomes pretty painful and I'm a slow typer. So working on wiki is out for a short while.

Link to comment

Yup! We used to have a special setup for google search. I had to build a custom page for it and with all the changes that have gone on I would need to build a new one. It's on my list!

It's no big deal Knuckles. I have a tool for merging histories on the wiki. It's still new to me and I've only done it a few times so I've just been putting it off.

I hear yah on the back thing. Hope this bout doesn't last too long. :)

Link to comment

I wouldn't beat myself up about it Knuckles, you made hundreds of quest pages and only two slipped by, that's a pretty good track record.

I feel you on the back pain, I've noticed a direct correlation between working on SacredWiki and an aching lower back. For me taking a day off and going to the beach was enough to stave it off, but I suspect I'm a young whippersnapper in comparison.

Anyway, to business. As a byproduct of working on Combat Arts pages I finally redirected all the links that went to specific Seraphim Aspect focus and lore pages. The links now go to the "Aspect Focus" or "Aspect Lore" pages as they should. So these duplicates are what's left-over. They would be orphans except that there are some guides that link to them and I'm not supposed to edit other people's guides. So maybe a redirect would be appropriate, I dunno.

http://www.sacredwiki.org/index.php/Sacred_2:Exalted_Warrior_Focus has two guides that link to it.

http://www.sacredwiki.org/index.php/Sacred_2:Celestial_Magic_Lore has two guides that link to it.
http://www.sacredwiki.org/index.php/Sacred_2:Celestial_Magic_Focus has two guides that link to it.
http://www.sacredwiki.org/index.php/Sacred_2:Revered_Technology_Lore - orphan
http://www.sacredwiki.org/index.php/Sacred_2:Revered_Technology_Focus has one guide that links to it.

There are focus and lore skill pages for all seven characters that need to be corrected. As far as I can tell, whenever the decision was made to just use one Aspect Focus and one Aspect Lore page, no one ever went back and corrected the old ones, so people just kept linking to them. Kinda makes me wince to think that for 5 years all the CA and Set Items pages have been directing people to the wrong pages.

Link to comment

We got a loooot of correcting to do! The wiki saw massive amounts of data going up in it's infancy with pretty much zero patroling. Now that the wiki has grown up we can go back and correct past regrets. :D I'll see about find/replacing those. :)

Link to comment

No problem! I get the feeling we should just delete those aspect skill lore and focus pages. Antitrust was the mastermind of skills and in 2008 he had the smarts to merge them all since they didn't differ mechanically. I believe we kept them in case a relevance was found for them. It's been about 5 years... I'm thinking that if they were to be deleted that we would be just fine. After re-linking everything of course.

Link to comment

I heartily agree. If they're left here, some future wiki-worker might link to them again not knowing any better. Or a user might do a search, find those pages, and wonder why there's not more info about focus and lore skills.

Here's the batch from the High Elf. I corrected all the links so they're all orphans now:

Hi Flix, I actually believe that there is a difference tween Seraphim Aspect Focus and each Class's Aspect Focus, I remembe hwen I was making a build in the old days, that I was hungry for info specicifally on how the Dryad's aspect focus choiced modificed her Combat Arts. We didn't have it in the Wiki in those days, as we had this catch all, which is not precise, but was a fair stop gap till someone could come along.

The way it should properly be done, is to to actually specificy on the class aspect focus or lore how increasing each one has an effect on each CA. it's a bit of work, the build has to be played out, to see the actual benefits in action to get a full grasp.

this is a high level of resolution for this wiki, and is a kind of increase of power on the microscope to see more in action.

I get though now that the kind of interest in the game is different and this would take time, and the catch all in place is good for now, who knows, maybe someone years from now will have those pages properly set up.

If you can post all the links to pages that are now orphans, I will remove them, as Schot is aiming his slimming down cannon at pages rather voraciously these days

:4rofl:

Yeah just the two posts I've made in this thread. That list of High Elf pages and the other list is the Seraphim's pages.

I don't know if Focus skills act different between the character classes. I don't think so.

Lore skills can definitely have different effects (for example not all Combat Arts do damage, sometimes Lore improves other things like amount healed, or more resistance), and I'm trying to document that on each Combat Art's page. For example, under Dashing Alacrity's Skills and Attributes section I list "Exalted Warrior Lore" , and say specifically what it improves about that Combat Art. This was a terrible example since there's no "Exalted Warrior Lore" but you get what I'm saying.

Ah, that was the issue. It was the lores... I remember the lores being the part that had to be tested because they each expressed themselves differently.

As well, the game has, as a concept, the idea of a class specific aspect lore.

With this in mind, we're to delete the lore pages, which could have purpose and create links to other pages in the Wiki, and just put everything into one page?

What if someone wanted to see what kind of an effect adding to just lores per class/aspect would do on CA's... how would the Wiki answer to this type of question?

:)

Well, the Lore skills don't have a class-wide or even Aspect-wide effect, other than what is already documented on "Aspect Lore." This is the standard. Tactics Lore functions in a similar way and can also can a few more things than just what it says on its own page.

Where the effect of a Lore skill can differ from the standard, it differs on a Combat Art to Combat Art basis, not by class or aspect. So I think the appropriate place to describe the oddball effects of a Lore skill would be on each Combat Art's own page. This is where the reader can see those instances where there's a variation from the standard. Otherwise, they need simply look at "Aspect Lore" or "Tactics Lore."
