Sacred 2: fast, copy install possible?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, how are you doing.

I just started up my newly bought hardware (i5 4670, 16 GB G.Skill 2400, SSD), and since the installation process (mainly the update process) of sacred 2 is known by all to be a big pain in the butt, I was wondering if someone has already tried just installing the game from the DVD and copying the rest of the files from the old directory over it (with cm-patch and everything). Would that work?

I haven't even installed a display-driver yet, but I'm waiting for my buddy do bring me his 2 old NV 560Ti for 30 bucks each. So there's still a little time...

If nobody knows, then I'll just try it out and let you know.

Until then...

You got nothing to loose by trying it out.

Normally updates/patches add and/or change registry settings tho,

so this "may" not work out in the end.

But since this is a new clean installation

and if you have the time, try it out.!

installing from the DVDs and just copying and replacing those file with the ones from the updated version works fine so far.

Game starts, game runs in-game...

no long run testing possible atm though.

but I'm happy enough, that I don't have to go through all that CRC-fail BS....

edit:

For the time being, I'm having lockups (of the game) in an almost constant period of time. Don't know, if it's due to the install method.

I only have fallen angel but I've installed it like 3 times after new/cleaned systems and used the Ascron sacred2 homepage forum to update it each time without issue. what exactly do people have a problem with when updating? in case I run into it in the future.

@Veraxious:

I think It's the patches ( the big one that patches the game to 2.40.0 I think )

It's slow as hell and "may" sometimes throw a random exception or some such

Even when it does patch without any problem, you can copy the whole folder

5-10 times over in the time it takes to compare every single file

And, besides, if you have already modded things you want to keep,

you need to back them up, replace them with the originals, patch & pray

and finally re-apply them, a lengthy process indeed...

@Nighthawk:

It would be nice if you could describe the exact procedure you followed,

like for example what did you patch and what did you copy.

Keep in mind that the 2.40.0 patch also installs/udates/patches the PhysX engine

and probably some other stuff aswell, other patches may do that also.

They also "may" register newer components that your method just skips

Lockups/crashes, in that case, are kinda normal

cheers

oh I gotcha. I haven't gotten into the modding yet. I'm still just looking to get I&B for the first time so I can do the play through and fall in love with the game all over again. I'll do the other stuff later lol

I installed vanilla (probably 1.0 or something). And then copied the old folder from the old HDD onto the new SSD.

As it seems, I'll have to do a proper install to see if these lockups are really connected to the copying.

They appear to be more time- than location- or action-based.

@Veracious

Many of the patches do a complete CRC-check on your entire folder. Doing that on the odd 7 or 8 GB takes an intolerable amount of time. In addition to that, the check makes random mistakes by itself, and there's alway a chance that 1 bit changed during copying from the dvds, or there was a hair on the disk.... It may happen, that you have to recopy several files from the disk again, or do a complete reinstall on the fresh install....

btw, if there is a CRC-error, the patch installation exits... you modified your balance.txt and forgot to make a backup -> reinstall....

I think I would be prepared to beat the crap out of the idiot, who thought this was a good idea...

I would say redownload the patches, manualy, from here or just google them , from wheres your dvd version to the lates. Its the patches fault btw, if you got errors while appying them, and btw before you reinstall everything try to remove anything related to sacred 2 from the registry by using the search function, be careful what you delete tho.

My original 2xDVD vanilla installs version 2.02.0 of the game.
( idk how you get a version 1.0 )

On top of that you "need" to apply the 2.40 patch,
and I mean NEED, because that patch does alot more than just
copy the newer files ( actually it calculates the file differences )

As I said above, this specific patch installs / updates some ( newer ? )

components of Ageia or NVidia ( don't remember exactly which )

and who knows what else it does in registry and / or service registrations.
The only step I see possible for you to skip is the final CMpatch,
when you are ready to install that, you could instead just copy
your already patched game-files over from the old PC.

Uhm... about the head bashing, you know this method they are using
is actually very good when your patch needs to support
a variable number of previous versions ( anything between 2.02 and 2.40 )
and bring them all successfully up to date, and all this, while keeping
the distribution size as small as possible ( and it still was about 1 GB large .!.! )

Its either one patch to flip 'em all or one patch per version issued,

they took the 1st option

( understandable, keeps support simple (-r), maintanace low (-er)...etc.. )

cheers

All I know is that when we were working on the Beta we had to download new files every week or so, sometimes more often ... and they were ALL 12GB!

At one time I had all the different versions I'd downloaded on my HD, you know, the one I recently finished smashing and dicing and reformatting? I might have copied the files over somewhere else first but now I'm not sure why I'd bother. It was a slice of history but they're no good to anyone any more. :(

I really don't know, what version comes with the disk... didn't really pay attention.

As for the "need" to properly apply patches: I wondered whether it would work without. That's what this is all about.

I still don't really have any confirmation whether my hang-ups are caused by not properly patching or not.

Atm. I'm playing X3-Reunion. So it may take some time until I decide to do a proper install for confirmation. At which time I will, of course, tell you guys.

My gaming history is fairly limited, because I restrict myself to "the best of the best". And at no time in the past had I ever as much trouble patching a game as I had with Sacred 2. ... not even close...
