New pans and pots and recipes

I will be less active for 3 months. The reason is that the wife of my diseased best friend is ill and need to do lunge surgery and a following rehab for some month at sea weather. She has a brother who lives in new zealand, too far away to care for the kids. All grandparents life in senior homes. To prevent a change of school for the kids we will keep them for the time.

So we will be 11 at the family table for a while. The first 2 days brought a big problem already. We had large pots and pans for our normal family size. But the large ones are still to small. So currently I am looking for some new ones. Not larger, but rather extra pans for 4 people each rather than a bigger one for 11.

So with 2 pans or pots the recipes could be varied a bit for each pan/pot.

Are you fans of cast iron stuff too ? When I was still at school I had a pocket money job for cleaning the machines at a company who did cast iron stuff. A master showed me how I can do my own pan and I still use it.

Ack.. Sounds like you're gonna be busy for the time being!

Cast Iron... To a degree, yes, I am a fan of it. But it does require proper seasoning in order to make it work right. It can be a bit of extra work.

The only other issue I have is that my non-cast iron pots and pans have a stay cool handle and I don't normally need a pot holder to manipulate them.

Cast iron pans - not so much.

My parents were in love with Cast iron! I remember all those black pans in the kitchen, specially lovely for cooking curries, big part of my family's heritage.

They're so hard to maintain though, they have to be seasoned right?

Throw me a teflon anyday lol

Great that you're taking care of a friend Chattius

That's the best kind of care

I was godparent of the oldest daughter, my wife of the youngest boy. Don't know how it is elsewhere, but in our area being a godparent is not just a name on a paper. You choose people who you want to care for your kids if you are no longer able to do it.

It isn't much more work either: cooking for 11 takes same time as for 7 or 8. My driving license allows me to drive the van with 12 seats, the barn has guest rooms, bath and toilets anyway...

A few resdrictions:

Our 14 year old can't visit her sport training 2 times a week just one, the son of my friend the same. They were used to towns with cinema, many kids meeting, ... Here everything has to be asked in advance to make a driving plan. My wife says they probably are a bit to shocked anyway to show teeny behaviour at the moment and the 3 month will be over before they start to try out their limits.

---

Back to the cast iron:

yes smearing oil on it and into the oven to season it. The spatulas I use are from wood and I am a big fan of not cleaning pans other than removing the visible dirt with a spatula. No electric cleaner - which we don't have anyway.

That's the thing about these pans, the maintenance. I know for some it would be a craft and a great personal wealth, and I grew up on food crafted from such iron.

What a pleasant place it found within me belly

Our second and the son from my diseased friend got in a discussion over these videos:

While the Van Damme video is more or less real -small platforms behind the mirrors for the feet and an invisible savety rope - the Chuck Norris one is a fake. pfui Chuck.

Both were topped when our youngest daughter ordered our big (he 124 pound, she 98) Leonberger dogs to crawl side by side and she did a split on them for 5 seconds befor they reached the wall and they started to lick her face.
