Event Horizon: loved it!

+1 for Event Horizon. An absolute nightmare. Did you know that Mr. Fishbournes daughter is a porn actress? Just sayin.

But where is John Carpenters The Thing? Ok, it was a bit cheesy now and then, but overall a terrifying experience. Id like to add Pans Labyrinth to the list. It is not a horror movie exactly, rather a fantasy movie with spikes of incredible brutality and evil. You might hold your breath one, two times when watching it and shed some tears at the end.

Scary, horror, splatter, .... What is the exact definition to each of them?

Most scary in my opinion are movies about things that could be real and could happen to me or my family:

Sharks? --- In our woods?

Aliens? Really?

Zombies? Undeads which start to move after a short while after dying. They are against several physical laws. Claiming it would be a fever affecting the brain would be better. But that would be a rather slow process. Not turning into a zombie after a minute after death.

Most scary animal at our place? Ticks, few movies, but none is based on something I would really fear: Tick-borne encephalitis. Could be combined with a realistic zombie movie. Disease slowing affecting the brain and changing behaviour.

Another good idea would be a horror movie about a slime mold turning intelligent. The bigger they get the more intelligent the blob gets...

Or swarm intelligence. Schätzing's 'Der Schwarm' finally after all that years as a movie or rather a series (so many actors) perhaps.

---

In my opinion TV shouldn't show any scary movies between 6am and 11pm. Life is scarying enough seeing Trump and Johnson in around the hour news fighting Corona.

One of the best horror movies of all time!  I suppose it doesn't scare me so much now, but as a kid I remember turning it off in terror when the dog split open.

Heh, saw that I had already weighed in 5 years ago with "The Exorcist."  I guess there's really two different questions here: what horror/supernatural/thriller movies are your favorite cause they're so good?

OR

What movies are actually the scariest to you?  For me, really scary movies are those that change your thoughts and behavior even after the movie's over.  They kind of live on in your head, disturbing and unsettling you in some way.  They make you want to close the curtains in case something's peering in.  They create an irresistible urge to look over shoulder in a dark hallway no matter irrational it seems.  If you're really sensitive like me, they'll haunt your dreams.

A Quiet Place was an excellent movie with fantastic tension, but it wasn't scary.  I wasn't scared of making too much noise afterwards lest the monsters get me.

Movies like The Exorcist, Event Horizon, or Hellraiser: Inferno aren't necessarily in my top lists of favorite movies, but they're definitely some of the scariest I've ever seen.  They instill some of primal cosmic terror in me, I suppose.  They're all quite different movies but they all have in common people being completely swept away from they thought was reality.

You have very good points Flix! - A Quiet Place is definitely not scary. I loved the premise. It could be more of a thriller. -  (And as Timotheus says above. It does take a short bit to get into. Even though they did a good job at the movie beginning where they lure you with the terror of what is out there.) Then it is a bit slow to get going.  (Similar how action movies start w/ a big action scene and then get into character development, etc.)

Flix, did you see the The Exorcist (TV series) w/ Gina Davis? What did you think about it? I thought it did a pretty good job making a TV show of exorcisms (although that is a pretty broad/generic thing)

Event Horizon was fantastic! Pandorum was another movie that I really enjoyed. Very interesting premise.

I've never seen the any movies from the Hellraiser series

@Timotheus  - I also enjoyed The Crazies as well! (My wife, not so much) - But everyone has their own tastes. :)

Yes, the dog scene is scary indeed. When they burned the human mutant with the malformed hand.... damn, that was scary too. The effect crew had a lot of fun in this movie.

Hellraiser 1 and 2 are on youtube. Full movie and uncensored. First one is ok, second one is nice to watch due to good villains. The actors really performed well. There are more parts of the franchise, but they are as cheesy as the Terminator sequels and prequels.

Thanks Dax! - I'll have to checkout Hellraiser! (I have a lot of time, now that we just went to a "stay at home" order for WA State!) - Thanks for the source info. Good to know about the acting. :) - Especially with those older movies. Great acting can carry movies, if they had to. heh.

Hellraiser: Inferno is the fifth in the franchise. Usually when you get that deep into horror sequel territory they become terrible (Leprechaun in the Hood), but Inferno was a stand alone movie that doesn't require viewing any of the other films.  It's unique in the series and IMO the best one.  I don't know if I really recommend so it's so disturbing but it was definitely scary!

Didn't even know there was a TV series.  I haven't actually watched any of the film sequels either, just the first one.  One was enough!  :D

Hellraiser Inferno is on youtube as well and a movie called Leprechaun in the Hood really exists! :Just_Cuz_21:

Btw, I have found a channel on youtube which deals with the Alien franchise, and it hosts some very nice fan made movies. Very well crafted.

Thir13en Ghosts

Ohmigosh I loved this one. The extra great thing with this one is the DVD has a special section with detailed portfolios of each of the ghosts which is really cool. :agreed:

I am the biggest wimp ever when it comes to scary movies, but for me it is rarely the story - though I really do enjoy horror stories, they are fun. What is actually scary for me is the characters in the movies. I could even see a film that wasn't even that scary but a character might haunt me for ages and scary kids are the WORST!

Funny story, one of the characters that really freaked me out was the little boy from The Grudge. And a couple of months after I watched that movie I still kept expecting to open the shower curtain or turn over in bed or open a door and have that little boy scream/meow at me. Also it did not help that my bed at the time was just a mattress and box spring on the floor so about the same height as the bed in the movie where she woke up to see him standing by the side of the bed. So anyway at the time my daughter was 3 yrs old and woke up in the middle of the night.... do you see where I am going with this? So she comes in my room and instead of just crawling in bed with me or shaking me awake she just stands at the side of my bed staring at me. Well I must have sensed her there in my sleep because I woke up and just saw a dark shadow of a kid standing by my bed...  my scream was seconds from coming out when I realized it was her. Thank god. At her age I would have terrified her if I screamed in her face just after she woke up from having a bad dream! :scare2:

Oh I absolutely know the feeling.  There's one moment in the Exorcist, where a face flashes on the screen.  It's presumably the face of the demon Pazuzu that's possessing the girl.

I hate so much to look at it, it's so unsettling.  I hope you know how much willpower it took just to go search for this cursed image.

Bahaha that's happened to me too with my 4 year old niece.  I was staying up late watching the show "Salem" (about witches) and she came into the dark living room quiet as a ghost.  And when she was right next to me, he just says very softly "Uncle Ben?" And I almost jumped through the roof.  :cstars:

Strangely that wave of Japanese horror in the 2000's didn't affect me much.  The Ring, The Grudge, Dark Water... I always thought Japanese ghosts just didn't look very scary. They always looked so weak and frail.  Tozxjbv.gif

You know there was a movie which scared me this much as a child that I decided for all time to never do a trip to the USA?

Young german couple doing their honeymoon travel in southern USA and are hunted in the desert by medics who are paid by rich people who need new kidneys, lungues, ...

Fleisch (1979 version)

Given the price of surgeries and health care in this country we're probably not far from that reality.

I'm not sure. I agree that the concept was well done. Maybe I'll have to go check it out again. Maybe it was just over hyped for me, and I had to high expectations. (I also found that child actress pretty annoying.) But what can ya do? - It just wasn't one that just missed for me. - I didn't like the The VVitch either. (Unrelated, I know.) :)

Muhauauah.
