Census Police... only in Canada?

Recommended Posts

Can't believe this... I just got the notice in the mail, apparently it's mandatory that we complete the Canadian census either by mail or online.

If we don't, we can get fined and go to jail :o

I lucked out, and got the short one... only 8 questions long... apparently one in four Canadians gets the long version... you'll need coffee for it, as it's 61 questions long!

:oooo:

Apparently, they need this info to figger out where all the money goes for social programs... our last govt conservatives, removed the mandatory Census (which used to be done in Canada every 5 years) ... but this new govt has just reinstated it...

lol...I could go to jail if I dont fill it out by May 9th!~

I got the US long form some years back. Turns out "I don't know" is not an acceptable answer. They called me, told me I was legally obligated to cooperate, and encouraged me to guess.

I normally pay too much taxes. Without filling dozens of papers the state would keep the money. Kids belonging to the club of tall people = reducing taxes by the amount you pay extra for larger clothes, living away from village, no taxes for dogs as long they are watch dogs, repairing a house which has historical value = less taxes, books about my work to stay uptodate - can use them to lower taxes, ...

Taxes from income from work, capital ... are withheld directly and are federal ones. You have to do papers if you think you paid too much.

Taxes for garbage, water, dogs, ... are community ones. (not connected to communal water supply and watch dogs, so I don't pay for that)

Inheritance, beer, gambling, fire protection... are state ones. (normally you can't get anything back here)

The online page for taxes has a fitting name ELSTER (=magpie) for ELectronische STeuer ERklärung - electronic tax return

Is there a mandatory Census for Germany like here in Canada then?

Germany changed to a central register with identification numbers. Germany used for the european community census of 2011 a central register and an anonymous interrogation of randomly chosen households to check if the register was at least a bit correct.

Religion wasn't asked but name, address, squaremeteres of household, how many people, and all such was asked. We weren't chosen.

Wrong answers would have been a crime.

The last time I was expected to fill out a census form I never even recieved it until after the date it was due to be returned by. When they chased me about it I told them it was their fault for sending it by post since it is so unreliable! Nothing happened and I never heard from them again.

Yep it's still mandatory, although lots of people don't bother and the government don't enforce it the way they used to.

for us if we dont sent it in , it's a fine, then

What's happened interestingly enough is that this year's crop of citizens, the new millenials, so to speak, responded in overwhelming numbers and speed to the census... in the first day that the census was sent out, they crashed it! :l

Canada's 'enthusiasm' for census brings down StatsCan website

GOOD!

What the taff is this "answer this census by mail or email, or we drag you to jail" lazy work?!

In Estonia we designate official census representatives to do house calls. We only had like 2 in total in my whole life time, and they were only aimed to just to figure what population Estonia has. And no one ever said anything about giving false answers would be a crime.

So frak this. They want my honest answer, they can just ask me to vote on it.
