leonardo da vinci -> Continuously variable transmission

Wasn't really working at the time of Leonardo being build from wood and iron. But modern technology allows its use in e-bikes. Best watch the video how it is working.

soy bean -> Grünkern

Soy beans root very late. With the big rain storms in spring in our hilly area the earth is washed away. So local farmers had big problems with soil erosion when using soy beans. Spelt is a local plant. The corn is husked and can resist bad weather. Last year octobre we did a field of 10*30metres with spelt. It was planed to harvest it with a school class. With corona we will harvest it with our 'summercamp kids' this weekend while it is still green - using sickles. It is the old way. The old way is also to remove the husks with an ancient wooden machine and to dry the green corn (Grünkern) in the remaining heat of the baking house after baking bread.

Harvesting while still green was a historical way to counter misharvests. If a fungus or bad weather destroyed the normal harvest you still had the dried green corn already harvested.

Grünkorn has a slightly smoked taste from the baking house drying. To use it it is watered the day before and it can be used like rice. Lots of very healthy recipes. Something must keep us barbarians alive.

Phobia -> Hide and Seek

Short story by Arthur C. Clarke

Phobus is a moon of the Mars. A spy in an interstellar war is fleeing with a small spaceship, pursuit by a space cruiser. The cruiser is faster and so the spy decides to land on Phobus and send the small spaceship on autopilot to call for help. The spy can easily walk around whole Phobus in minutes while the cruiser is too big to make narrow turns. It is very much like a squirrel running circles around a tree escaping a bigger predator.

The story about the space action is told while a hunting party and the narrator shooting at squirrels in anger. Guess who the narrator is, an officer never raised in rank after the happening, the captain of the cruiser.

james joyce -> Hans Bender

When we were 14 we read 'Forgive me' from Hans Bender.

April 1945, near the Rhine. A class of 14 year olds has English. The teacher says that 'forgive me' is rarely used, mainly when speaking to god. More often it would be excuse me or just sorry. A girl is in love to a boy same age but he is making jokes about her. The war gets closer, fighter aircraft are strafing, the boy is drafted with other boys and old men as a last defense. The girl decides to visit him and to share the last chocolade she has with him. Artillery shells explode and the girl wants to run back to town. An old veteran from world war one stops her and says too late.

She goes back to the boy who says why have you come. She asks what is happening. He lifts his head and is hit in the neck by a sniper. While whining a soldier with strange uniform is approaching, the gun in readiness. He takes her in his arms saying 'Forgive me'

Was a bit shocking because the actors were same age
