Popular Post chattius 2,512
Our second visits a dual school a bit away , preparing for university (focus on robotics) and learning a skilled trade (wood working). She is at home just for weekends and so we gave her carte blanche for most decisions. She is the only girl in a class of 21 people and was outvoted when choosing the location for a school trip before summer. Class decided for an expensive sunny beach, she wanted a cheaper and more cultural trip. She had carte blanche to sign for the trip where ever it would be and did it. There was a parent meeting discussing the costs and she was there because we had no time (triple birthday, twins and mine). Seems some parents tried to reduce costs saying that it would not be fair if she had a 4 people apartment for her own while paying the same. She said to the meeting that she won't do the trip, even she could pay the extra costs. She had a mixed feeling anyway being at a beach as the only girl. The classmates are not knowing that she has scars all over her body from a bicycle vs car accident. The parents nodded, accepting it. And then she put out her Holzhammer-Diplomatie (diplomacy swinging a wooden hammer) saying: As a minority (being the only girl) the state would have paid for the extra 3 beds... Without her the number drops from (5+1)*4 + 1 teacher = 25 down to 21 beds, 25 would have been a discount... A school trip at a beach needs 2 people with a rescue swimmer license, one was the teacher, the second was she... She could still do the trip and accepting the 'extra' costs. But in her eyes they would have a minus sign in front: it would be cheaper for the class if they would pay her the trip and 500 Euro pocket money... Then was some discussion, some said they wouldn't have known all the facts... Then my daughter said she wasn't at the meeting for money reasons. She would have done the trip if she would have felt welcome... As I said, she had and has carte blanche. But I think the discussion will continue. I know from my school time that my whole class did small jobs for a week to allow a boy with a dead father and a mother with a lunge disease to pay for his trip. So I can understand her feelings. Why was none of her classmates doing some talking before this parents meeting? Somehow I am happy that this happened on my birthday. Else my wife would have been at the meeting and a lion mother defending her kittens is nothing compared to her 3 Link to comment
rm3000 85
Sad to see that some people don't want to understand one simple thing: We're always better off together. On the other hand, it's just a few years. Also, she has some free time to go visit Rome or Paris now. Link to comment

Indeed, yet what is even sadder is seeing people make such a huge mistake, knowing that they have no true understanding of it and are therefore unlikely to learn any lesson from their folly. You and your daughter did what was noble and right in such a difficult situation, yet there must be little solace where there is an ending in which everyone loses. Link to comment
chattius 2,512
Update: The trip would be close to Ravenna in Italy per bus. Hotel to Ravenna will be 8 kilometres. So we used the winter breaks to discuss the option to load her bicycle into the bus so she can do trips to Ravenna when the rest prefers the beach. Her body parts where skin grafting was done don't allow too much direct sun, so a few early mornings or camp fires at the evening should be fine for health and class harmony. Next problem is that she isn't 18 because she jumped a class... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ravenna 1 Link to comment
