KOUKAKU KIDOUTAI

 

Koukaku Kidoutai (aka Ghost in the Shell) is definetly a classic anime movie. Odds are most likely that you've either seen the movie or at least images of it. Why? Remember a song from Wamdue Project called King of my Castle? Now do you remember the video of it? The images are from Ghost in the Shell. The movie is an adaptation after a manga with the same name created by Shirou Masamune.

 

Story:

The action is set in Japan, in the year 2029 when technological advances have made cyborgs and cybernetics implants a common thing. However this has also lead to new forms of crime, such as the possibilty of hacking one person's mind (refered to as "ghost"). To combat this the police have formed special divisions such as the Section 9 of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission.

 

The story focuses on Kusanagi Motoko, major of Section 9. She is a female cyborg with abilities such as higher physical strength, thermal-optic camouflage and hacking capabilities. Since her body is artificially created, she questions whether her ghost is actually human, or just induced memory designed to make her feel human. She has two members under command in her strike team. First one is Batou, a large, strong man whose distinctive feature is his artificial eyes. The second one is Togusa, a man without any artificial alterations to his body, which is why the reason Motoko picked him.

 

The team follows the trails of a misterious hacker, dubbed the Puppet Master who is specialised in hacking people's ghosts. As the story progresses, question arise about how to define something as human (or live sentient being) or as artificial (and thus just a program).

Personal notes:

Unlike the manga which focuses on more than just one plot and even has comic relief moments, the movie focuses only on the Puppet Master and the theme of humanity. The movie has no comic relief and has a darker tone. This is mainly seen in major Motoko, who is more contemplative in the movie.

 

The movie is a very interesting one to watch due to the questions it poses about topics that might indeed become reality in a near future. Lets face it, technological advancements in robotics and artificial inteligence ar ocuring at an ever increasing pace and fiction might one day become reality.

 

Another really noticeable element of the film is the background songs, consisting of choral music. The music adds to the dark feel of the movie on a somewhat misterious level. I'll try to find a video with it and post a link here later.

 

Other than that this movie is definetly a classic must-see one. Even if you're not really into anime chances are that you'd still enjoy watching it.

My favorite Anime of all time, I just think that the song, way the robot flies and the unique powers of the robots who join up with elemental powers are awesome.

 

 

K, next...this one's from France I think and I love the amazing story line. A family , a la ulysses is lost in this big space wheel and they have to find their way back home through a hell universe that the greek gods have sent them too. Superiour animation, great effects and great song.

And just THE coolest anime heroe ever, another french one... Capitain Flam..this is probably THE best anime song ever done.

heh, yeah I like anime songs huh, and it's interesting how, if the song is good, I tend to like it.

 

 

And another..this one is a wicked pirate space ship with an amazing lead pirate space toon who's attire now reminds me of the way the seraphim is dressed for Sacred 2!

The ending on this series was so tragic, with all kinds of baddies finally boarding the ship and killing almost eveyrone. heh, that certainly didn't make my saturday morning

Okay, so.. Anime, I wub every anime you pass on to me I have never ever seen NOIR but I am seaching everywhere I only have the OST and that one is so friggin good. I am a huge fan of AMG aswell, GitS is practically imoortal in my head, the second movie.. how many times do I have to watch it before I completely understand it. I have few anime on DVD's have lots lots more on my PC and burbed lots on dvd's as data.

 

I cannot say that anme has not changed my llife, it drastically has, I love the japanese seiyu I'm more of a newcomer (3 years atm) my first anime was the first episode of Ah! my goddess. I liked it so much I hungered for more, so I discovered mininova, and ever since I watch every anime I has the free HDD space for (145gb is always full >.<) I tried watching naruto but stopped at around 60, it was milked too much IMO though the OST's were good as were the OP's/ED's.

 

When it comes to the Anime Music I'm sure I'm your man.

 

Secondly I LOVE FINAL FANTASY! got over 8gb of music on it never pplayed a game but I love all the storylines etc. have seen a few FFanime aswel as the FFVII AC man I can't stop watching that one piece of artwork. the music is good aswell in the ovie, I like how they made the battle scenes' music so well, I like battle scene music

 

All in all I hope I can post here more as I need to catch up. why don't we post allt he things we've watched so far and give a little feedback on if we recommend it or not? (if you don't do that already)

Hehe, those are some interesting bits from your childhood I presume.

Definetly different from some of the recent stuff, but probably just as interesting story-wise (haven't seen any of the ones you mentioned though).

But as you know me I'll have to make some comments on what you said. Ulysses 31 and Capitaine Flam (as you named it, actual name is Captain Future) aren't french animes. In fact the term french anime is incorrect to begin with since we already said that animes are japanese. This two are joint french-japanese works but still fall into the definition of anime.

As for the Orbots, well it wasn't actually made for Japan, but I'll leave that as it is and not comment on whether it classifies as anime or not.

Hmm, depends on how exactly you're looking for Noir. If you're looking for official release then I can't help you since I'm not interested in those for the moment. Mostly because I don't like how the voices of english actors sound in anime and I can't speak japanese, yet , so I have to resort to subs. If you're looking for subs as well then you're most likely doing it wrong. Can't say much about it in here, but feel free to contact me.

Heh, the second movie of GitS, yupp definetly deeper than the first and harder to comprehend in one go, but then again that's one of the beauties of anime, the fact that they can be so real.

Influences on life, hmm, dunno, mostly the desire to learn japanese one day as well as watching less normal movies and series. I usually keep about 100 gigs on my HDD and the episodes get burned on DVDs periodically, usually the ones that have been sitting the longest on my HDD first. As for Naruto, well that show is mostly either you like it or really hate it for being anoying. I like it, except for about 100 episodes that I didn't actually watch, but that's ok since they weren't part of the story anyway.

 

When it comes to the Anime Music I'm sure I'm your man.

I on the other hand only listen to a select few of songs from animes, all being either OPs/EDs. At the moment I only have 44 songs out of more than 200 animes. Then again I'm picky about what types of music I listen to, being mostly a metal fan.

I'll admit that I actually don't know much about FF, except some character names, like yuna or sephiroth, but I've been planning to see the animes of it, especially Advent Children, which is rather well-made from what I've heard (both graphic-wise and story-wise).

Well I'm mostly trying to post an elaborate description of each anime I've watched, though my time is kinda limited. But everyone is free to do as he wishes in this thread as long as it's about anime and as long as it encourages discussion. Also as I said before, worthy descriptions get mentioned on the first page.

I haven't watched Kanon yet, despite all the positive reviews, I plan to do it sometimes, but at the moment I'm watching far too many animes at the same time to have room for a new one.

What I'm watching now in alphabetical order: Bleach, Claymore, Code Geass, Death Note, Naruto, One Piece, Seirei no Moribito. All this are ongoing animes, also I'm watching two already finished ones, Basilisk and Rozen Maiden (though this one might not exactly be finished).

I never quite poked my way in this thread, as I don't want to renew my addiction to it. I learned to read Japanese because of that, you can imagine how bad it was (and the bad includes my Japanese skill, which never quite developed )

 

Anyway, I won't mass spam your thread, but one of my favorite is E.V.A. Evangelion. The story is rather deep and I don't wanna spoil it. Its very original in its storyline and the music in the TV series is very well written.

 

I recently saw the English version of D.N.Angel in store, its not superb but the take of the dark vs. light is rather interesting in the story. But it has never been finished as far as I know, the author moved onto better bigger project.

Yeah, EVA is a really cool show with a great story and great characters in it. As for the music, well as I first listened to the opening I though to myself "that sounds, uhm, old" yet I couldn't stop from listening to it at the begining of each episode, sometimes more than once.

BASILISK: KOUGA NINPOU CHOU

 

Basilisk: Kouga Ninpou Chou (Basilisk: The Kouga Ninja Scrolls, or just shortly Basilisk) is a 24 episode long anime based on a novel with the same name. The anime is a mixture of action, history and fantasy, though the history part is only used for reference mostly.

 

Story:

In the year 1614 Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of Japan, has already retired and his third son is the current shogun. Despite that Ieyasu is still the one ruling Japan. However a conflict has arised now between his grandsons as to who will be the succesor of the current shogun. In order to prevent the conflict from escalating, Ieyasu decides to start a competition between the two greatest ninja clans, Iga and Kouga. Each clan will represent one of his grandsons and will have to send their 10 best ninjas to fight eachother. The group that manages to kill all the 10 ninjas from the opposite group will be declared the winner, the grandson they represent will become the heir to the position of shogun and the ninja clan will be granted favors by the shogun for a thousand years.

 

The Iga and Kouga have been rivals for more than 400 years, yet a peace treaty was forcefully made in the late 1500s, and now the grandson's of the two clans' leaders are due to marry eachother. The two are Gennosuke of Kouga and Oboro of Iga. However the shogun's decision nulifies the peace treaty.

 

The competition was initially announced only to two members from each clan (including the two leaders) who are due to pass the message forward to the rest of the clan members. However the two Iga clan members decide to attack the Kougas before they can deliver the message and they succeed (despite the fact that the two leaders killed eachother in battle) thus gaining the upper hand in the competition.

 

As such the questions that arise is will the Kougas be able to remain in competition due to their obvious disadvantage and what will happen of the relationship between Gennosuke and Oboro.

 

The story emphasises on different supernatural ninja techniques such as the ability to blend with the enviroment, the ability to tansform one's face to look like another person, the ability to drain one's blood through skin contact etc. Among the techniques, Gennosuke has the most powerfull one, being able to cause death to an enemy just by eye contact (thus the series' name). On the other hand Oboro has no ninja techniques or combat abilities whatsoever, yet she has the capability of dispeling any ninja techinque just by looking at the person using it, thus making her immune to Gennosuke's technique.

Personal notes:

This show is very cool with lots of action as well as a romantic story added in as a bonus. The story has a great story and plot development as well as a somewhat unexpected ending. There are no bad points about this anime, though there is one thing that might not appeal to everyone which is the appearance of some characters. Some of the ninja techniques are inspired from animal abilities and as such some of the characters have an appearance resembling that of animals. But then again it's a fantasy anime so things like this are to be expected.

 

Again, great graphics and awesome soundtrack. I especially enjoyed the opening song, which doesn't happen that often. (less than 20% of cases)

 

What can I say, if you're looking for the best ninja-related anime, then this is the one for you.

Talking about old, I really liked Nadia: The secret of blue water. I watched the original Japanese version as a kid (with Chinese subtitle), the translation I got from wiki, they even have a Spanish version.

 

The music kind of suck in this one, and the graphic is soso because its kinda old. Still the story is really well written, very unguessable in many ways. The final episode blown my mind away.

 

The true ending is a bit disappointing however. They should have just stopped after the final battle instead of wraping everything up in the cheesy way they do with fairytale.

I was just watching the Basilisk video. I find it interesting how the anime can use animation to pace life out differently. Some of the camera views used are quite unique and because they are, allow the creators to stretch out moments. When in these "micro/macro" moments, it's like a microscope has been opened on the emotions and elements that are focused on. I know that this technique is being used in "snip and cutaway" shots in real life movies but I wonder if it was taken from anime.

I was watching a bit of a movie last night called Stranger then Fiction. Will Ferrel stars and...this movie is really out there. Huge amounts of CGA effects that bring attention to detail and help pace out moments.

I'm wondering now if real life movies are taking cues from medias like animes to find new ways of displaying and focusing upon elements.

Hmm, haven't seen this one (due to the fact that it's old an not that many animes were being broadcasted back then here). But looks interesting though, so what is it about?

 

It been a long time, so I will sum up what I still remembered.

 

The story itself is driven from the once scientifically advanced Atlantis. The main battles are between the Neo-Atlantians and the Naltulius (thx wiki for the translation). The Neo-Atlantians wants to dominate the world again by recovering the science of Atlantis, and the Naltulius exists only to stop the Neo-Atlantians.

 

Nadia is the leading role in the story, an African girl who carried this mystical crystal jewel "Blue Water" that will alert her of any immediate danger. She has been running for all her life, without family and friend. Until she is saved from the pirates from a boy. But Nadia herself doesn't know the secret of the Blue Water, only that it has been inherited in her family for generations and that she must protect it at all cost.

 

The story goes from there, I can't possibly go on without heavily spoil the storyline.

 

What is interesting is that the story is told by the perspective of children, so it unfolds in a rather immature way, hard to guess and full of surprises. Still, it is soon obvious that Nadia and her Blue Water are vital components in the battle, and the Blue Water answers only to Nadia.

oh, about anime I like a lot some series like samurai x, evangelion and my favourite: Cowboy Bebop, its about a bounty hounter in the space, but the whole story is very interesting, I recommend it to you

I found a new addiction today, aside from Naruto, it's called Initial D: Fourth Stage (don't know the Japanese name). Found it on a site where you can watch it streaming.

 

I have a movie called Initial D, it's a Japanese movie about a guy who delivers tofu for his dad. He uses his dad's car without a license and his dad knows that btw. He needs to race down a mountain every day. The boy makes phenomenal times and wins a race against some guy (a street racer) who challenged him. As it turns out, his dad was a racer in his young days, and tuned the car completely for the downhill run. Mr. king of the downhill joins a racing team from his friends, who all work at a gas station. One of them is a complete loser in racing but thinks he's all that, and when shown the skills of the new member, he pukes once the car stops.

The guy (Fujiwaka iirc) is challenged by a top racer, and ends up blowing the engine of his dad's car. Challenged again, the car gets patched up, with a racing engine. The top racer helps him adjust his car again. When F wins, the top racer asks him to be part of his racing team.

Initial D: Fourth Stage shows the top racing team in action, challenging others allover the place. The cars are displayed very realistic, and the same cars of the movie are in the anime as well.

When you like movies like The Fast And The Furious and anime, this is a perfect addiction for you!

Nice description you did there myles. The show looks interesting, though I wonder if I'd be able to watch it. I might be a bit too "old" for it. Oh well, I might give it a try once and watch a few episodes and see how it goes.

While I enjoyed Samurai X and Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop was one of the shows I didn't really like. This might be strange, since this anime is considered as having one of the best soundtracks ever, but it was actually the music that spoiled the entertainment for me. Jazz and rock and roll are definetly not compatible with me. Same goes for blues which also had the effect of making the anime feel as if it's going really slow.

 

I found a new addiction today, aside from Naruto, it's called Initial D: Fourth Stage (don't know the Japanese name)......

Ah, Initial D. Yupp, really cool anime if you like the idea of street racing (well, actually this would be the only anime about street racing, but it's well made nevertheless ). However of the Initial D series I've only watched First Stage, so there's still Second and Third Stage before I get to Fourth.

Initial D was a wave in Asia, funny you should mention it. The English version lost quite a bit of characters from the translation though IMO. They should have involved a Japanese person in the translation process. Its way more enjoyable in its original version if you ask me.

 

There's another rather old anime I like about car racing, which I think you guys would enjoy if you like Initial D. But I dunno its English name, I will poke around wiki and see if I can find it.

The name Berserk ringed a bell, but I don't remember anything about it. I might have saw it, probably the manga (I was a junkie of those once). Talk about it more, maybe I will remember something.

 

Back to the main reason I'm here. I remembered you mentioned the Gundam series somewhere Indy, and I have wanted to reply for a while. Didn't have enough time until now, so expect this to be one long post.

 

Ok, I practically grew up with the Gundam series. Well the real original "Mobile Suit Gundam"was aired 1979 in Japan (the year my elder sister was born, shhhhh don't tell anyone ). So yes I saw the "Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam" first actually, but that's not important to you.

 

I will just say this once. Its a must see. Yes the graphic pales in nowadays standard, but the story is simply amazing. But you are right, the original series are close to impossible to find. I don't think the original version was ever officially distributed outside of Japan.

 

But you really should get the Japanese original version with English subtitle (the exported version). Or the very original if you have confident with your Japanese. It is important. The English version has been modified, and some scenes plus an entire episode were REMOVED at the request of the author.

 

It shouldn't be impossible to find, since I know the Bandai Museum still sell the original version in DVD form. Some of these must have gotten to Europe and US.

 

You see, the anime was low budget and was created on the fly. If you can get hold of the original novel, you will see that Amuro (the main character) was meant to die! And that would mean the rest of the series would have never happened!!

 

The authors themselves have so little power that their design of the Gundam was rejected. The Gundam as we see it today was forced onto him by the toy company Bandai. Maybe a good thing, but we will never know for sure.

 

It wasn't a glamorous anime at all during its production and its first run. The original finale was canceled entirely, you will see how unsatisfactory the ending was if you can get it. I hope you do. (Btw, the US run was even worse, it was canceled because of 911)

 

The series didn't perish because of the subsequent success of the its toy, I will never forget it. If you have a non-opened Gundam, it is worth a fortune nowadays.

 

I won't get into the rest, it would bore you to death.

 

Just One thing before I end this post. You should be able to find the "Gundam MS IGLOO" mini series easily, as they have just been released. Its about the one year war that precede all Gundam series in terms of timeline. So its a good compromise if you can't locate the really early series.

Beserk was my favorite anime ( when I used to watch them) the entire series was amazing. I was, however, very disappointed in the ending and that it never went any further. I wanted more!

Watching the first episode of Berserk (which is the last in the timeline) it wasnt hard to predict the ending. The Anime version ends with part 26 but the manga continues till today. If you can try to get them - they are really worth.

I am wondering if anyone knows the manga or anime Berserk? If yes whats are your opinions about that one?

Well, yeah. I've seen the anime but can't say I enjoyed it that much. I believe it's because of the fact that the amount of medieval europe details in it just made it "too european" for my tastes. =/

What ^he^ said. The story from the anime is continued in the manga so if you really liked the anime then go for it.

Well, I am trying to find subed Japanese episodes of the original Gundam made in 1979, but so far I'm lacking 6 of them... I always avoid getting english versions of anime since in many cases stuff is changed for various reasons. The rest of them are easier to find, it's just the 1979 one that's hard to get. I already have the Gundam Wing series and watched them since they're not related story-wise to the 1979 one, as well as Gundam SEED, also not related, which I haven't watched yet though.

 

I certainly didn't know all that stuff about the authors and the anime's success so guess I learned something new. And you're definetly not boring me, I enjoyed reading your post since it's nice to find out how other people feel about things that interest you.

 

Aww, I don't have, nor ever had, a gundam toy. So I guess there goes my chance at getting rich huh?

 

As for my japanese skills, err, they're probably at toddler level. The good part is that I start classes in october. The bad part is that I have to wait till october.

Ahh! yes an oraganised Otaku! I myself watch many animes.

Animes I've watched:

 

Noir: Slightly boring, but action scenes make up for it

Final Fantasy Unlimited: Cool story I really liked it besides the way they raped up each episode.

Star Ocean Ex: Cool for the first 10 episodes then gets boring

Fruits Basket: Pretty good anime last episode kinda sucked and is more liked more by girls

.Hack//: a really good anime series may be long but the outcome in the end was always pleasing... the anime is about a game! watch it!

Chrono Crusade: A really good anime, good story and a really good intro

Tsubasa Chronicles: I liked this anime alot I suggest u take a look
