D.a.r.k. vs, Eleanor [PAX]

This hit was NOT for profit, never intended to be, never expected to be. This was pure, malicious revenge.

 

Background

 

The sun dawned brightly on the Summer Solstice (Winter Solstice for those South of the Equator). The birds chirped, small furry rodents scampered, and at 08:31 server time a curious message appeared on DarkMatters. A request to join D.a.r.k. by someone noone in D.a.r.k. had ever heard of, going by the name Eleanor. A flurry of activity ensued. The matter was circulated internally and basic information was gathered quickly from various members.

 

The skinny was that Eleanor was a new name on pug's old account, ranked 32, fair-sized fleet, huge G1 turtle, 10K sats, and 1 moon. Eleanor was requested to provide some additional information and post an introduction so that members could get to know the applicant. Some posts, PMs, and the like were sent, Eleanor seemed like an OK person. A vote was taken, and despite some misgivings, provisional acceptance was granted for a period of 30 days. Eleanor would not be allowed to view some sections of DarkMatters, and would be evaluated after a month to determine if a permanent place should be offered.

 

On June 26, 2007, Eleanor was provisionally accepted into D.a.r.k. On June 27, 2007, Eleanor dropped out of D.a.r.k., formed a new alliance [b.O.] and sent a goodbye note on DarkMatters. Members of D.a.r.k. did not take this well, as will be seen. Eleanor later joined PAX.

 

The Planning

 

Within 24 hours, discussions regarding the flattening of Eleanor's turtle Main were underway, and a few hours later, the first colony ship was dispatched to the area. Fighter jets were scrambled, DarkMatters was placed on DefCON 4, the D.a.r.k. Ready Room was reoccupied, and 99 red balloons went by. The decision was made that those who had free planet slots would place colonies in the area [ike and OMGSTUFF] and those with planets in the area would build them up [Yaga and Gintukas], and others would donate res [most notably GoGoblender and Indy during the hit]. In addition, Yaga would hit the satelites and any fleet left on the planet after the IPM strike. Special thanks to Claire for tech / IRC support and cheerleading.

 

Planning the day of the hit was a challenge as weekends seemed to be best, but members were frequently traveling. At last, the weekend of July 21/22 was selected. Several planning and status threads were opened and Eleanor's online times were watched. The day before the strike, a private IRC channel was opened. The estimated number of IPMs needed: 2800.

 

About the Hit

 

D.a.r.k. is not, by its nature, a warlike clan. Made up of a mixture of miners, fleeters, and raiders, only a very small portion of D.a.r.k. HoFs ever make it to this board. D.a.r.k. has never declared war. But D.a.r.k. is a close-knit community, and does not take insults well. When D.a.r.k. members are harrassed or attacked, D.a.r.k. members and allies respond.

 

Universe 9 is dying. A lot of the top members are now long gone, but many who started here 18-24 months ago are loathe to relinquish the fruits of their hard work and start afresh. We saw this hit as an opportunity to show what D.a.r.k. is capable of, to reinvigorate interest (within D.a.r.k.) in Uni 9, and to plant our standard in the record books of ogame.org. To our knowledge, this is the largest IPM strike in the history of ogame.org. The next largest we know about was [Wayne] vs. [TF] Neon in Uni 6, with 768 IPMs. We used 1453, a little less than twice the number.

 

The nuclear rain began to fall gently on Eleanor's plasmas at 10:00 server time on July 21, 2007, one month after the initial application to join D.a.r.k. And on and on they fell, pitter pat, Pitter Pat, PITTER FREAKIN' PAT!

Eleanor was either online when the strike began, or came online soon after and built some ABMs before logging off for the night. No more activity or building occurred until approximately 20:30 (ten and a half hours in), when the account went into (v) mode. We do not know if the current owner is the same one who snubbed D.a.r.k, and really, we don't overly care. As they say in the Corporate World, D.a.r.k. had a team-building weekend and came out stronger and more enthusiastic. And D.a.r.k. will be watching. The problem with turtles, they have nowhere to hide.

Great Job Everyone!

It's the biggest ogame.org turtle smash in history.

And more than anything we punished a spy who attempted to shame us

Kudos to everyone for their patience and faith.

We've always been an honest community and this is the first time we've ever had to punish someone who was so deceitful and cavalier with the sincere welcome he was given here when applying for our Clan.

Claire, special kudos to you for getting the new channel rigged up right and proper. I'll never ask where the wine and oysters came from but I do know that we're grateful.

This is a special delight for me - Most probably do not know that Elanor hacked Incendareous's account a last week and also Igs's hotmail account. ( She was banned for a while - you may have noticed - how she got unbanned is beyond me ) I had investigated her as a target, and well - Turtle is an understatement!

I've been checking on the planning threads since this all began and what a tremendous coordinating effort. And the outcome was simply spectacular, you guys had all the angles covered right down to this sleezy dude running into vacation mode.

 

I also read the responses to the posting in the OOF and while I respect SNAFU's position on this, trying to support an alliance mate, he (and all of PAX) will get burned by this player in the long run. Keep your guards up and watch out for PAX. It may worthwhile to let SNAFU in on D.A.R.K.'s history with eleanor.

 

I know that D.A.R.K. has shown the UNI 9 community a tremendous display of alliance power and pride and for those who will criticize us for this must understand that this was not anything against PAX, but a simply matter of teaching a sleezebag a real lesson in maturity.

 

This was sure a neat way to re-kindle some excitement in UNI 9. Keep the good times rolling (Eleanor will drop out of vacation mode when he thinks the heat is off), gives you all enough time to rebuild the nukes, hehe...

Everyone thanks for the awesome words. We don't do stuff like this often, so when it does happen considering the documented history of our community here on these boards...it's important that it be the right thing to do.

 

We're convinced it was.

 

A lot of things don't "jibe".

 

He didn't know he had "limited access" to our board.

He only knew he was on probation and that's it.

He had a fair view of all our internal sections with the exception of ONLY two that he was not permitted to see:

 

1-Personal game goals

2-Ready Room.

 

Eleanor did know know he could not see those rooms.

 

-Him saying that his not being able to see something that only WE knew he could not see makes this, another lie of his, apparent.

 

-That whole Africa thing which he brought up with us only a few hours after he left...did he not know this all the time before? If he was applying in good standing, why no mention? Why would he have spent so many days here posting so many messages and forwarding me so many pms and never a mention of Africa or his "friend"?

 

-And did he really go?

 

-Him running to Pax only after he got probed by us?

 

-The speed with which which his new site was made...only HOURS after leaving us and posting "supposed" interest in joining up with D.a.r.k. ...

Why didn't you guys approach us for support? I'm sure you'd have gotten more help from several members of DAWN.

Ankh, I think it was because we felt so...slapped, insulted, call it what you want. This guy did something to us that noone's done before. He disrespected EVERYTHING that was offered him. And that hurt more than any HOFF or bash in points this game could ever do to us.

 

Bringing our friends into this could have caused more problems for the entire ogame community. What was done was done because this guy outright betrayed so much that we believe in. He disrespected the time we put into him and then, after so much of our time getting to know him and let him in, lol, he runs off with a crummy reason that's now been proven to be a lie!

 

Those actions then put his whole reason for asking to joining us into question and made all his actions suspect.

 

His treachery was a wake-up slap to our faces and it became an issue of us having to punish a spy who betrayed D.a.r.k.

 

We are all very, very grateful for the support we've gotten on the hit, and I think we're all more than happy that our allies and friends have backed up our decision. Dawn, Revenge, Envy, and to everyone else who's posted support, thank you. It was a month in the planning, and it's something we've never done before. Our history clearly shows that.

 

Were we bored?

We have stayed out of so many wars...it's our way. But this was something different. It was a personal attack on our ideals and trust. He was judged.

I don't think that what I did was the correct thing to do because it was a dishonest act, it would be much better to tell the truth, but I was not sure you were going to understand it if I said the truth, that I don't like to wait to much to join an alliance, what I did it's not right because what counts about a person it's the way he/her talks to the people, earn their trust, and like I said before I'm not proud of my behaviour.

Your apology is accepted. D.a.r.k. (and IKE) appreciate how difficult it is to make such a public show of contrition. In this case, it was doubly so as we came after you with what must have been an unexpected ferocity. Certainly, you could not have known how serious would be our response, and it is easy in such a situation to feel that you are being wronged and thus makes a true apology even more difficult to make.

 

D.a.r.k. is (at least by U9 standards) an old alliance, and one that is more a close-knit community than simply a collection of players with a similar goal or focus. We do not accept people lightly into our midst, nor do we tolerate those who we feel have wronged us. Your actions, although not meant maliciously, touched a few of our hot buttons. A hot war between D.a.r.k. and PAX was a very real possibility as a result.

 

However, because we accept the sincerity of your apology, we will not make further reprisals or hits without the possibility of profit.

 

To Snafu:

 

D.a.r.k. has always held you in high esteem as a leader and negotiator. Although it took a while for us to understand each other’s points of view, we appreciate your willingness to put the effort into resolving this issue. Indeed, were it not for your backing of Eleanor, it is unlikely that we would have been willing to back down. However, we take seriously your estimation of Eleanor’s character and given your own assurances, we are satisfied.

I thought you guys might enjoy a closing comment from an outsiders point of view. *Lurk Lurk Lurk*

 

First of all, that is the best way to end a disagreement. All of those forum flamers/trollers need to take a look at how this problem ceased to exist. If not for Gogo and Snafu, this could have erupted into a giant volcanic explosion, complete with missing fleets and hurt feelings. I have seen it happen many times before. Instead, it was resolved in a refined and diplomatic way! I wish my enemies would be so kind to handle problems in like manner. I know it is just a game, but why not reflect your own character in a game as well. After all, what you think is what you become. (I know it is cliché, but it is true). All in all, a Splendid job.

Thanks Blade. We love the comments and that's one of the reasons why this forum and the community are strong. Regarding the settling of this issue, so much of it was done behind closed doors, and after the OOF thread went quiet, it was the amazing talks between Ike and Snafu that pulled this through with Ike doing the real footwork and presentation on this while talking to Pax.

All in all, I think everyone's very happy with the outcome and we can all try to go back to normal ogaming.
