FDM on... Sleeping pills?

Recommended Posts

Lately, FDM has been (relative to other sites) terribly slow on my pc, with loading times regularly over a minute where other pages load under 10 secs. Does anyone of you know why I'm experiencing this, and what I can do to make it run fast again? Visiting the forum is hell for me atm, posting or viewing threads takes ages.

The strange thing is, I'm typing this from a pc at my university, and everything's OK here.

Try to use different browser with your pc to test it.

I don't know what are you using at home but here are some major options to chose from: ie explorer, firefox, opera or maxthon.

If the other browsers doing same as what you are using currently, you might be missing some add-on.

If other browsers working normally, just try to find what might be missing on your slow browser. Try to clean your temp files (it don't really help but better than nothing), etc.

Hey there Timo.

Are you still having trouble browsing the forum? It's possible that our recent upgrade may have caused a temporary problem for some people. Yarasa's suggestion is a great one in case it is a browser issue.

Let us know how things are going with that. :cow_white:

P.s.

Can you tell me how long it has been happening and is it every time you visit?

Thanx!

Thanx for answering Timo's call for help and giving us a link Llama. :)

I've responded to our poor Timo on the SIF. I'll post what I've said there in the hopes that someone here might have some insight into the situation based on the facts I put forth:

With any luck it will resolve itself... I hope!

Can you try installing a new browser like Opera and test darkmatters with it?

And maybe PM me your msn? lol

The only thing I can say at this point is that during our upgrade last week what happened was that the site was moved to a new server. Meaning the nameserver of our site changed. I don't know for certain if that is the source of your trouble but that is the only thing that changed.

Thinking about it a little more I do recall that some people were not able to access darkmatters some hours after the upgrade and some were. As I'm told, when an upgrade like this occurs it will take some time before everyone will be able to access the site. Specifically, that the DNS needs to propagate. Could it be that you are still catching up?

Just a thought. I'm no expert. News from my tech support may clear that idea...

Went ahead with your suggestion schot, and now I'm able to view pages in about 2 minutes. Not lightningspeed, but a helluvalot quicker than before.

Thanks everyone for helping me  and I've run adaware/spybot to no avail. I chuckled when I tried running pandasoftware's free antivirus scan and avast! reported a worm in the installation files...

Anyway, I'll get back here again :)

Spoke too soon. FDM started acting up in Opera as well.

My conclusion:

It is a connection issue. I started a VPN connection to my university and whammo! lightningspeed :P

Changing between VPN and normal connection the speed drops from (x)xx kB/s to xxx B/s.

In the sif someonw was talking about a bottleneck issue. That would make sense...that the route taking you to fdm from your house is very much more difficult than the one from school or other sites.

Timo, I hope your isp resolves this soon...I miss the food posts

Hey all :drunkards: sort of back in business now, but I'm using a VPN connection atm. Only goot thing is that at least I can use IE7 for browsing now.

I'll hold on for now, in October the new contract should become active, I'll wait till everything's transferred etc before taking any action.

Well I don't see a change yet, so I'll hold it off a bit longer, a few days that is. The less graphic forum version is quicker than sterling sacred, though there's not much of a difference without that VPN connection.... :bye:

Ah, I contacted the ISP and they called minutes ago. My mom had absolutely no clue why they were calling lol.

Turns out, we're having an IP adress in a bad range, the problems are known and they are still busy trying to solve it.

The problem: contacting the .org domain.

Solution: hard one: changing mac adress of the router, turning off/on modem. Easy: turning the modem off for over 6 hours.

I'll be in touch

They cut you off from us?! :)

Wow... That's very strange Timo. Glad to know you're on the recovery though. So I guess we'll know if things have improved for you in about 2 hours. Crossing fingers for you my friend!

There's a string of IP's at the .77 range or something which somehow does not get you to .org as they should.

Apparently, turning the modem off for six hours disconnects us completely, and we'll get a complete new IP on reconnecting. He said that that's basically the best option.

You should consider sending their response to another isp and ask them if it holds any water.

This just sounds so strange man...I mean... .org's are one of the top three domains on the web.

Any isp provider who's having these kinds of problems just sounds so wonky.

I really hope you can get this sorted out Timo.

The options given by the ISP did not work. I now know why.

UPC has been giving out IP's from 77.xxx range, and apparently they are not functioning. I've found messages saying those IP's are probably on blacklists, because they were used for spam (in the past). There's not really a solution, since UPC continues to give out these 77.xxx IP's, even when resetting/getting a new mac-adress.

So I'm stuck on a VPN connection. This blows.

I'll give the demanding a fresh IP a go, but there are apparently soo many users who experience this... The new IP range was contracted so they could supply IP's to all new customers. Oh well, I can always give it a go.

I've put the VPN connection manager is in my startup list. I can live with that, it's like using gmail notifier now.

Actually, my ISP seems to have some routing trouble (as well, or maybe that's the major problem now, there's no answer to that yet). There is quite a list now of sites that commonly do not work. Other people in the 77.xxx range tried getting to FDM but experienced the same trouble as well.

From looking at tracerts to various sites (made by others), a lot seems to go wrong after the 8th hop, which is the 3rd international hop:
