How to edit sacred uw ingame text successfully

Note from DarkMatters Admin:

Ascaron does not official support the use of editing for Sacred, this therefore leaves this thread in a contentious position. We have decided to allow the thread to remain until further official comment from Ascaron. All use of the following information in this thread are at your own risk.

*download the 'Sacred Editor' you'll find in this download-listing

*unpack the Editor you just downloaded into a new folder somewhere on your HD

* go to your ...\Sacred Underworld\Scripts\'language code'\Folder and backup the global.res file in it

(the 'language code' folder-name varies, depending on your localisation for the German (GER) version, you'll find a folder named 'DE' for instance)

*launch the editor, open your global.res file , search for what you're looking for, alter and replace the original text, save the changes.

*start sacred uw, and get delighted.

*if something went wrong, start the procedure over again, try something else or use the original un-altered global.res file again.

NOTE: this is an UN-official tool, use it with caution, and no need for discussing it on the official board.

however, no harm's done to others when using it, since you only alter the names that appear on YOUR machine.. viewed for you only..

if eg, you show the original named english version of Thar Eross Ring to any Polish player,

this guy would see a ring originally named Fafnirs Ring on his viewscreen (perhaps).. it's the German version of the name,

the Polish localisation is messing up english item names with german item names)

edit:

oops, so many forumsections. 'course I hit the wrong one, you may move it.

Hi Rotluchs. :D

This only works on Sacred Classic or with my unofficial 2.29 patch of course.

Sacred Underworld don't loads the global.res. It is encrypted and packed into the sacred.exe. How ever, the unofficial 2.29 patch forces Sacred to load the global.res from the hard disk. Good think they shipped the global.res anyway with underworld and even new versions with the official patches. :)

Hey guys, pretty interesting thread here.

I have to ask though, is this editing ability officially recognized and okayed by Ascaron?

We a few thousand peeps a month perusing the Sacred Forums here at DarkMatters, it's kind of important to know what the official stance is on this.

:D

Thats a difficult question. Ascaron is a bit schizophrenic about modding.

Let me tell you a little story, so you can understand the situation.

Back than modding was not allowed by Ascaron but we (SacredVault) don't cared much about that. We startet a discussion on the official german forum about modding and asked to allow it. Surprisingly they dont close the thread. They let the community discuss about that for a long time. Today the thread is still open. :)

But they dont make a decision on allowing modding. They don't say yes and they don't say no. But we know it was been internal discussed by the developers.

Time passes and we have made some little modding tools and build a little mod. That was the first version of the VeteranMod. And then we just released it over night on the official german forum. That was a open provocation to ascaron. We want to force them to make a choice on modding. And they finaly did! They official allow modding! They even thought about releasing official modding tools, but they never did. And things were not clear. They write that modding is allowed but it is not allowed to modify all. But they never sayed what is allowed and what not.

On the next months some little texture mods and fanmade modding tools appeared on the official forum and they were all tolerated. Not one of the threads was been closed or deleted. After some time we canceled development on the VeteranMod, because of major internal bugs in the balancing system of sacred, that we can not work around. After that not much has happend on sacred modding. So it is still official allowed!

I see the situation is a little bit different on the international forum. They write something about sanctioned mods. That the VeteranMod was been sanctioned by Ascaron and only SacredVault is permitted to do mods. But that is not true at all. People that can read german: Just go to the official german forum: forum.sacred-game.com and do a search on "modding" or "mod". On the german forum nothing was been sanctioned we just done the stuff and some others done it do. After all there never arrived a massage to SacredVault that the VetetanMod was been sanctioned! We dont know nothing about this until seeing it on the international forum.

So the situation is: Do what ever you want, but never change anything that could affect the closed net. You are free to do all on open net, except for cheating and cracking.

And thats why the unofficial patch is a little bit another problem. It works on closed. But it changes no content of the game. On the german official forum only a link to it was been allowed no discussion, this changed today. But it is still not declared as illegal.

Finaly I done it. :)

My english is not very good, so feel free to correct me via pm. So I can learn. :agreed:

A fair enough answer, Thorium, and I'd also like to welcome you to DarkMatters

:agreed:

I've just added a disclaimer into the first post of this thread stating Ascaron's official point of view on ingame modding, and we can wait until further news from Ascaron on this subject.

The information here is very interesting and could be of use to people that have been playing this game for many years now, we will just wish to add the note that all use of information here is at the player's own risk.

Cheers!
