The Traveling Merchant Guide

Recommended Posts

Here it is folks. That oh so fun lil trick to have your very own personal merchant escort. No doubt there can be many fun and beneficial things that can be done with this! :4rofl:

This guide can do two things. Place a merchant anywhere of your choosing in the Sacred Underworld map or allow you to have a merchant follow you anywhere you go. That's right kids! You read correctly!

Below is a video example of how this is done. Basically what you do is begin the "Hidden Merchant" quest. The Merchant is found in a cave south of the portal of Porto Vallum. Once you have the merchant following you you'll need a second player to talk to the merchant. The second player will see the dialgue box open up asking the second player to accept his quest. The second player should leave the dialogue box open in order to force the merchant to stay where he is standing while the first player, you, goes to complete the quest. All that is needed to complete the quest is to walk over to the area he tells you to go. It's a blue book like any other quest which you can see from your mini map by pushing the tab key. Once you have walked over to the spot return to where the merchant is being held. You'll see that he has a ! above his head which means the quest is complete and you can collect your reward. After you, first player, have collected your reward the second character should reject the quest. The merchant will remain in the place the second player was holding him.

Now something that was a very cool surprise is that during our last Kamikaze this next bit was discovered. tomi was the second player in the scenario and when his final turn came he chose to accept the quest. And that's when it all got very interesting! The merchant followed tomi but was also actively behaving as any merchant. We could buy and sell items with the merchant in tow. Cheers to you tomi! That was supremely excellent!

So if you want to plant the merchant somewhere then the second player must reject the quest. If you want the merchant to follow then accept. In which case the merchant will only follow the second player. You can do this while partied as you will see in the video. Makes traveling a lot faster.

The video shows an rough example of both what the first player and the second player experience at the same time in order to complete the process of having a merchant follow a character. First player on top, second on bottom. You might need to push your F11 key to make the video more visible btw.

Enjoy guys and don't fight over the merchant now. :4rofl:

Note that this trick must be done with a horse! Use a horse to travel everywhere. I think the important thing here is that you touch the ground as little as possible.

WOoooot! :4rofl:

Oh thank you Schot! I cant wait to play with this! The great thing is too, he can be passed off to another player as well when you log out!

The only potential drawback I can see is his merchandise reset. Does anything reset the available goods besides visiting a second merchant? If not, he'll always have the same stuff.

Of course, I guess he's almost as good as a Thar set for selling, though. Maybe better since you couldn't "accidentally" sell stuff.

OH Schot! You are the best!! :4rofl: Great work!

Haha I will always keep a merchant puppy. Oh and I didn't do anything. Anyone could do that.

Cheer Schot!! *respect*

Schot, any chance you can just plain find us a million dollars hidden in the game for us sometime before Christmas?

Wow, this kind of bug really does a number on the dwarf set huh...in fact...it really changes a lot of the basics we have been working with

Kaching!

You know I haven't even been able to really have fun with this one yet. I'm eager to see how this will all turn out. Maybe some other thing will be discovered in conjunction with this trick?

Oh and gogo. As for the million dollars you're after I think you'll be wanting to get into the Whiskey Business.

The merchant works great for selling gear. Kind of like a "poor man's Thars".

Spent an hour with the merchant after he got passed down to me and tripled my gold. Went from 10Mill to over 30Mill :)

After you, first player, have collected your reward the second character should reject the quest.

That's trick for getting him to set up shop some place remote (Knuckles and I were trying on the island). I made the mistake of rejecting the quest before Knuckles had come back to the island, so the guy jumped back to Knuckles. Now we know that player #1 has to return to player #2 and complete the quest to lock the merchant.

Can anyone think of any other NPC followers who do something special (like turn into something or drop something) that it would be worth trying the two person trick on?

Good idea masteff. There's got to be some other similar situations where this could be done. Can't think of any at the moment but no doubt there are many more tricks to be found!

A little update to this guide. During the last Kamikaze we attempted to set up the Haven shops and ran into some complications. Eventually we got things worked out but it took much longer than this guide shows. As it turns out I believe it is necessary to use a horse. Today while playing on a server by myself I tried several times to get this trick to work using two pc's. It just wouldn't work. Every time I tried the merchant would not stay put on the haven isle. As soon as I would go to complete the quest the merchant would follow me. He would pop onto the screen with me as I walked to Porto Vallum to complete it. Funny thing is that he was not ever walking. He was popping on screen whenever he fell out of view. It finally occurred to me that the video guide I made involved the regular use of a horse for travel. Eureka! I did the whole thing again on a fresh server and this time I traveled everywhere by horse. I was able to complete this trick with no problems once I realized a horse was needed. It seems that a horse is key to this trick.

Ride on cowboys!
