Llama8 8
Is there anyway to prevent DVD drives randomly spinning up/down when installing software (amongst other things), or make it spin up faster (so that windows recognises/finds the disk faster)? I was installing X3:TC last night & the DVD drive decided to spin down/up three times during the (slow) installation, which meant that the auto-play thing came up three times... Is it a sign that my drive is dieing? Or is there something that can be done about it? Link to comment

On older systems it was a sign that the CD/DVD was providing the information faster than the CPU could process it. Since the CPU was ignoring the drive while processing information, the drive thought it was finished, so spun down. It may be something similar on yours. I have found that the best CD drive for game play where information is constantly being read from the disk is an 8X ... again, that was with older systems. Link to comment
