  1. Sorry to drag up an old thread (and one of my own even!) but I remembered a promise I made a while back, in regards of my avatar, so... <--- Hehe it's back; I'm back! I'm myself again
  2. Oh my God are you serious? When I joined uni 30, I wanted to create the same alliance, but someone already took it. Halass, I was forced to join an alliance which now houses some top players from ye olde uni 1 and 3
  3. Oh you are incredibly right trd, and most probably will abandon their account or just get lost along the way. The thing is, when you have about a million points or more, 100k resources isn't all that much to miss once a week (or two weeks if you will) whereas this amount is enormous for beginning players. You are right about the ways to help new players, but I'd add just one more point: 5. Add the player to the alliance I know many will be hesitant to do this, being afraid too much of their average ppp score, and perhaps even the alliance reputation, but what do you really have to lose in the end? A player you helped that has been crashed is hardly a blemish on one's good name is it? PS. No that was not an approach to get into D.A.R.K. because I can manage on my own quite well
  4. Well, having just joined uni 9 again, I noticed the relative low amount of players. I recently opened a topic in our alliance forum for uni 30, which dealed with this issue. I'll make a direct copy of the article I wrote, and although I didn't apply to uni 30 just yet, I think it can make a difference in uni 9.
  5. Yay, it just feels "right" to play in my first ever uni ever on ogame ever... ever. Brings back loads of memories, about posts of Sun Tzu's Art of War applied to Ogame and the old DaG forums and stuff. Just feels good; it brings a smile to my face again, and I haven't had that dumb-looking smile on my head for quite a long while in regards to ogame. PS. Thanks again Llama, for the resources that are about to arrive
  6. Hello all, It's probably been ages since I last played in uni 9 with most of you, but reading these forums with something that could pass for regularity, has ignited my spaceships again and made me create a new account in uni 9. It's only just taking shape, and at a very slow pace might I add, being used to the uni 30 speed Anyway, I wanted to at least inform you all, that my ingame name is "Sudden Death" and that I'm always available for chit-chat. I'd love to be available for more than just that, but with only some low mines and a whoppin' Energy Technology level 1 I'm not getting very far Hope to catch up with you guys within the next 5 years - Akky
  7. For me, this is also one of those movies (next to the annual Harry Potter flicks) I will definately want to see in theater. The trailers look promising, and I can always do with a good dose of violence
  8. I cannot say I like getting up early mornings, but this is just plain terrible. There are actually people like Stian, can you imagine? Great short Timotheus, loved it
  9. Wow, what an interesting thread this actually is! I started posting regularly on the SIF, as most of the members I know here. It was because I wanted to learn about the game, and share my views and ideas with others. All in all, I grew to like the small talk corner more than any other section of the forum, because the game had lost it's appeal to me. When things went awry, and Ogame didn't do it for me anymore either, I kind of drifted away from forum life Now that I've given up my nighttime job, and will be starting in something administrative, I feel I just have to visit my old online friends again (which has also lead to a renewed interest in Ogame again, this time uni 30). But, like I said, posting in forums is a way of learning about unconventional points of view, and sharing your own thought about certain topics. Well, just be prepared for a somewhat more regular appearance from me
  10. Someone of the Darkmatters lot playing uni 30?!? Oh my word! Do pass me a message in-game (nickname: Kata) Oh and hi all. Sorry I haven't written anything the past few... weeks Been busy as usual (hence the low rank in uni 30) but now I have some spare time

    Security

Ah, the importance of security. Currently I'm using a whole range of programs (some free, others "free"). First of all, I have ZoneAlarm's firewall installed, which is free to download from their website and supposedly one of the best firewalls around. I've been searching a bit for how firewalls work, and what the weaknesses are. It all has to do with ports, as is commonly known. The firewall is a man-in-the-middle, who either discards packages it labels off-limits, or it lets them through. The problem, however, is, that it can't block to say, the webbrowser's port:80 which is opened. With the right header information in the TCP/IP packages, trojans and the like walk right in. Good, so firewalls guards ports that are opened by applications, but which you don't want anyone to connect to. Well, then there's AVG Antivirus, another freeware program also supposed to be good. A godd, up-to-date virusscanner is definately needed, but it also has its limits. Complex viruses, as endomorphic- and polymorphic viruses are almost never detected, since they adapt and transform to pass the AV check. Luckily for us, complex viruses are not widespread. I've found most complex viruses come in .pdf format. Naturally, the Ad-Aware program to clean up all the mess that is left behind on your computer by all and whatnot. Just a quick side-note on trojans: Trojans are always fast to go into your scanner's database. The problem with trojans, and especially the now-popular trojans that come through port 80, or other popular open ports, adapted by apt coders, WILL get through. You could track individual packages, read them for malicious code and act accordingly, but this will take too much time for the home user. Next to these protection applications, I have some other stuff installed. Tracks eraser pro to delete every history file upon shutdown. TorButton in Firefox, accompanied by the Tor network and privoxy, to make connecting to the web fairly anonymous. And PeerGuardian, which shields certain (governmental) IP's from connecting to your computer. The last one is critical if you are doing things that aren't quite... legal, such as sharing/downloading copyright-protected stuff. Hope this little list of programs, their uses and their handicaps, will help anyone. I'm currently very busy in reading up on networking, TCP/IP and general security.
  12. Alright then, with a warning accompanying it it'll never hurt, and you're right, it's a shame to let all that work go to waste. Eh, while I'm at it I might as well bring over my old avatar and maybe some of that fine spirits they got stored there
  13. Gogo, I'm more than happy to post the BM reference guide and maybe even the Ice Shards guide, but aren't they a bit outdated? The reference guide I think is over 2 years old, and the IS guide only a few months less old
  14. I might just pick up my old Battlemage in the future, and have a bit of fun with y'all, but don't pin me on that. Sacred is a game I was growing tired of, even with the new expansion pack; it just didn't do it for me. Well, to each his own of course, others have grown tired of, for instance, Ogame, whereas I still love the game. Maybe Sacred 2 will light that spark again, but then again, maybe not. I'll give it an extensive try of course, I'm not the kind of person to turn down a game before even trying it. Oh and yes, I did play M:TG for a very long time; I even had a foiled Akroma, Angel of Wrath and a foiled Ring of Gix, but I sold the lot to a friend, even my old Beta and Unlimited cards (yes, the Moxes aswell )
  15. Well well, what a warm and heartly welcome. *hugs Claire* *pours some vinage port and puts the cheese on the counter* I'm doing mighty fine, as you might have guessed from my first (ah yes, my VERY first) post. I'm having a blast spending time with the kiddo, which I have the time for with my occupation. I'm soon to make a promotion at my work, to a management function, and I'm fixing up my new house. Well myles, normally I don't much mind the signatures of people, but seeing as I was looking for a way to get into contact with the ol' Sacred lot (without going back to that dreaded game that took so much of my time) I just read about everything I could find. How is everyone here?
