  1. kiev -> war generation Chicken kiev was created when french chefs were hired by russian nobles. These chefs used only the best parts. I think the old ladies who learned the hard way in war and after war years to make the best out of the few they had might have been the better cooks, I learned all about which herbs could be collected in times of need from my grandma - and hell, what she could make from it was so good. Kiev, I could reach it with my Diesel car with its 90l tank without refueling. Modern war has no save distances.
  2. menhir -> chicken Menhir is old breton for a long stone, the ones Obelix is carrying. In the German comic it is named Hinkelstein. Myths say that the stones could only be moved by a 'Hüne' (giant person) and were named Hünenstein. With time this became a Hühnerstein (hen or chicken stone). And we Hessians have a slang which calls chicken Hinkel.
  3. creme de menthe -> Obelix warm beer, boar with mint sauce, ... Thanks God - that you made Britain as an island with lot of water between it and the civilized rest of Europe.
  4. Found a 11 pound heavy giant puffball at the morning walks with the dogs. Will probably turn into something like a Pilzschnitzel (mushroom-schnitzel) at firefighters. Add potatoes in skin and a sauce from roasted onions and cassis. Tasty sauce is needed because the puffball itself is nearly tasteless. And there were more of these balls, but yet not as big.
  5. mint -> Minthe Minthe was beloved by Hades, the King of the Underworld, and became his mistress, but she was transformed into a mint plant by his wife Persephone.
  6. MUFON -> Mensa Mensa is short for mensa academica. In Germany it is the university owned cafeteria. And of cause students were often unsatisfied with the lunch: USA = undefinierbarer Speiseartikel = something to eat and you are absolutly unsure what it is and contains UFO = Undefinierbares Fleischobjekt = a piece of meat, and nobody (even students in biology) know what it is. Rumours say cheap cangoroo roadkill imported from Australia Die Farben ändern sich, der Geschmack bleibt. The colour and look of the sauces changes but it had all the taste of chemistry,
  7. Our second is at university. She and her boyfriend both study medicine and find not much time for shopping, often doing 36 hours shifts. So time is precious and a meat delivery an option. The box contains no frozen stuff and the box reads put in fridge right away. If not, use it up in 36 hours. In our village a nearby farmer sells seasonal stuff. A small roof above boxes with food and a moneybox so people place the money in. Probably works only in small villages where everyone knows everyone. Beef and such: a food truck from another farmer sells it twice a week for an hour. For me a meat delivery is a question of 10 metres. The fence where the box would be placed is 30 metres from the house. The garden is behind the sitedoor, potatoe in the clay cellar and meat is stored at the back of the house which is reaching into the hill so cooling produces less costs. So a typical meat done with stuff at home has shorter ways
  8. Egyptian -> muon They use muons to dicover hidden chambers in pyramides....
  9. earthball -> Versengold The gods did a party and decided to create a new disc-world. But they drunk too much and got a mess. They decided to crumple it up into a ball and kicked it into space. At the live concert the singer kicks a waterball looking like the earth into the audience. The Day, on Which the Gods Got Drunk Eternity can be very long, Then you pour yourself one, So have the gods once done. And while they raised a glass somewhere far above, spoke one of them in beery enthusiasm: 'Worthy divine colleagues, we should indeed consider trying to to create something again, a beautiful discworld, and yes, exactly how we like it' And the other gods were applauding. That was the day, on which the gods got drunk, the day, when everything began, Bottoms up! (Bottoms up!) Yes, we want to thank you for all the drunken ideas which came to you. So they formed the lumps on the table, between the beer mugs, and poured clear water into the middle They created fishes and monkeys between all the wine carafes and decorated it with little flowers and stones. It wouldn't get boring, nothing and everything was sacred to them; Every idea was applauded in the gods' game. So they created and drank, confident, outdoing themselves, until the last god fell from his chair. That was the day, on which the gods got drunk, the day, when everything began, Bottoms up! (Bottoms up!) Yes, we want to thank you for all the drunken ideas which came to you. As the first god then woke and considered the night's work, he was not pleased with all the chaos. Hung over, he assessed accurately that it was a botched world-building. Even the salt was sprinkled everywhere. He said: "No more alcohol"; he crumpled everything up, cried "farewell, you little world, you were nothing but a mistake" and threw the colorful ball in frustration from the window into the universe, towards all the other :eek:ty ideas. That was the day, on which the gods got drunk, the day, when everything began, Bottoms up! (Bottoms up!) Yes, we want to thank you for all the drunken ideas which came to you. That was the day, on which the gods got drunk, the day, when everything began, Bottoms up! (Bottoms up!) Yes, we want to thank you for all the drunken ideas which came to you. https://lyricstranslate.com
  10. Prix -> Erdüberlastungstag / Earth Overshoot Day It is around these days, when more resources are used than growing back in a year. The price/prix we pay will be seen in future years. New ways and thought are needed. A nearby farmer combines wood, caddle and vegs.
  11. I have a too strong surviving instinct to send you my sun which is probably the same as yours. A sun a few kilometres above Canada will probably destroy the earth with its gravity. The weather here: Mist in morning,, then a bit sun, then rain, then sun with a rainbow, rain again and now after evening meal and walking with the dogs, a triple rainbow spanning over the valley. 24C, 20l rain per square metre, 4 hours sun in total
  12. 4711 -> railway station I preferred night trains for business travels. The main railway station (Hauptbahnhof) of Cologne/Köln: Kölnisch Wasser = Eau de Cologne
  13. nature -> 578 578 saplings of global warming resistant chestnut and atlas cedar planted last week... Now I have to hunt Bambi and its family to keep the saplings alive. Where are the wolves and lynx's when you need them.
  14. stream of thought -> meditation Thought stream is an USB tool for training meditating. I think it measures the electrodermal-activity. EDA has also been known as skin conductance, galvanic skin response (GSR). A state of meditation keeps it low and the tool shows that it is low. But GSR will always be the Suzuki motorbike for me.
  15. Electric cars... Part 1: There is a ship with 3000 of them burning near the German Bay and it seems noone knows how to fight the fire. Our training was to lift a burning e-car into a container with water and flood it. But on a ship? Too much water and it may sink and the german bay is a protected nature area. Right now they are only cooling the outside of the ship and hope that it won't sink. Part 2: Our oldest moved to a city part where Diesel are not allowed. Currently they park outside and use the bus. They are considering a VW ID-Buzz LWB ER, mainly because the uncle of her husband works as engineer at VW.
  16. The most beautiful weather: LANDREGEN, ENDLICH!!! Steady rain, finally!!! The ground is so hardened from drought that a heavy rain wouldn't enter it but flowing away. This rain softens the ground slowly. I guess most of you are connected to puplic watersupply. We get our water from our old deep well. It was almost empty. So the rain is very very welcome, even it will take 3 days for the water to enter it. Also I could finally continue my century project: planting some global warming resistant saplings from chestnut and Atlas-cedars where some big oaks were chopped three years ago. And after the work enjoying the rain with my wife.
  17. In times of global warning I try to get rid of batteries. Remove them from your TG!!! If you have no battery the TG can't shoot and tries melee attacks. So you get close for deadly spears and the touch attack used for recharging. You know, with 5 kids you can't have enough of paranoia. Solar cell, crank, power input, and .... curse .... batteries possible.
  18. spooky -> Brotato Currently most played at firefighter station. Advantage is that a game is quite fast. Nice while waiting at the phone for calls: Brotato is a top-down arena shooter roguelite where you play a potato wielding up to 6 weapons at a time to fight off hordes of aliens. Choose from a variety of traits and items to create unique builds and survive until help arrives. It has a ghost class...
  19. cold -> undercurrent There is a little artificial lake near. With the heat and dry we have the water level is way lower now and the dangerous undercurrents caused by cold water from a rivelet moved. They are way closer to the other side of the lake now. We were swimming with the family when we watched girls swimming towards the under currents. Shouting was not working, so I decided to swim towards them for warning. And suddenly there was a torpedo overtaking me... I must be getting old. I was still considering me an excellent swimmer, even at my age. But my son is now faster and probably has better eyes because he watched nice girls in his age from other side of the lake... To excuse the girls, the warning signs weren't adapted to the new conditions.
  20. 1933 the firefighting laws where changed here. The result was that many volunteer firefighters were founded in this year and celebrate their 90th anniversary in 2023. The neighbour village one is doing it today so our one is in readiness. Turned on the TV and there was something about good heavy metal bands. Hansi from Blind Guardian was one of the moderators and they played 'The Bard Song'. Named because one of the members was a big fan of the Bard's Tale computer game. Was chosing the live version at Wacken. Wacken is a small village with a band of firefighters. From year to year they did bigger concerts and today Wacken is the biggest heavy metal festival at least in Germany, perhaps the world. The firefighter band is still performing befoer the international stars. Playing brass music and the audience is with them. Was at Wacken 4 times, great-
  21. yeeks -> yaks Don't know where the yakety yak lives - secret valley in the himalaya, protected by yeti?
  22. what is -> Hummingbird hawk-moth Daughter of my niece growing up in Munich and on visit. First time seeing the moth which looks and flies like a hummingbird. We call it Taubenschwänzchen which translates as little pigeon-tail. They are fast, up to 80 km/h and can fly 3000km in 2 weeks. The hot winds from the mediterran helped them to cross the aples this year. So there were a bit more this summer
  23. paradox -> Pinocchio His nose grows when lying, but...
  24. slow ball -> dilemma (of the goalie) At a penalty you have to jump as a goalie before you know where the ball is going if aimed most left or right of the goal. The penalty shooter however can make a slow ball into the mid while the goalie who jumped is already on the ground at one of the corners when the ball arrives. The goalie can decide to don't jump at all and laughs at the one who tried a slow ball. After a virus when I was 14 the growing of my legs was reduced compared to my arms. Long arms, short legs . they nicknamed me monkey. And monkeys are not the fastest runners. So at soccer I was the goalie.
  25. Sheriff -> Slowhand I always wondered how Mr. 'Slowhand' Eric Clapton was able to shoot a sheriff who was probably a trained gunfighter.
