  1. OK, got the email working. Their setup had the incoming server as ".gmail.com" when it should have been "imap.gmail.com". The outgoing server was similar, except it should have been "smtp.gmail.com". Changed the two settings and it worked fine. Now to get it to access the existing files on the computer to see if I can use it for file recovery in an emergency.
  2. Actually, the button to the right of "What's New" on my screen reads "Sacred Wiki" ... What am I doing wrong? [Added] Ok, I found it. It's at the bottom of the page on the right side using the Sacred 4 Theme. There is an additional step after you've saved it, you must also set it as your default search or it must be set up all over again.
  3. One thing I've noticed about this new software that I don't like is the "What's New" button. I want to see a list of all the topics that have new input since I last logged in, not a list of all POSTS! I do like the fact that the new topics listed on the right are highlighted and when you click on the highlighted topic subject, it takes you to the last post read plus one.
  4. I saw it advertised on Facebook and did a little investigation. It sounded like it might be handy to use if I had a computer client who was having trouble with their PC. There is file recovery software included with the more expensive model. Basically, it's a bootable Linux installation on a flash drive. Yes, I know, I could have created my own cheaper ... possibly ... but this way, I don't have to do the actual work and I'm lazy! So far, I put it into a USB port on the front of my 64-bit Windows PC, turn it on, and it immediately boots into the flash drive. It doesn't boot as fast as the PC alone, but it boots a LOT faster than any of my older PCs. So far, so good. It doesn't seem to want to accept my gmail address for email, I may have to create a different account. Still waiting to hear from their Support Staff. Getting email using it isn't that big a deal, I just thought it should work. My next experiment is to follow their instructions on their FAQ to see if I can easily access the harddrives on the computer it's installed in ... for recovery. Haven't tried it on my iMac yet, but it's supposed to work there as well. Will post more here as I learn more about it.
  5. I can categorically state that every member who posts is important, no matter how many posts they make. My post count isn't all tat large, but I stick around because I believe in the series of games that started with Sacred. To my mind, this is the only place to be to get my Sacred/Sacred 2/etc fix ... even if I'm not the most valuable member.
  6. Yes, I just edited my previous post to comment on that. For now I'm trying the third from the left. Perhaps, once you get everything working as you want it, you could created a voting topic to find out which one is the most popular ... Too bad there isn't some way to hide the forum so we can just see the background.
  7. Ah, finally I can read Gogo's text at the top. I was wondering why he was using white text on a white background ... I like the Sacred4 Theme much better than the default. [Added] Just found the "Change Background" button at the top. That looks like it will come in very handy. No wonder I didn't see it earlier, you have to change the theme at the bottom of the page first! Lookin' nice.
  8. Fascinating. Knuckles: Where is the option to change the skin? I would like to experiment. I can't seem to get to any other page than the forum and cannot see a paintbrush icon anywhere on the page, much less in the upper right quadrant.
  9. Good thing I decided to check. 6 people die within 2 years of the start of Chapter 11, one fairly major! Three more die the next year, one is a man who helped Harry create his first Weyr. Then a whole slew of people, mostly minor characters die in the next few years. Chapter 11 is going to be really depressing to write. I wonder if I can get by by just leaving it out and jumping from Chapter 10 to Chapter 12?
  10. I used Apple Pay once, to see how it worked. I found out I couldn't get any discounts using it, so haven't used it since. Finished Chapter 10 tonight, a total of 265 pages, Times New Roman, 12 point, single spaced 81/2" x 11" pages with .5" margins. So far I've been able to stick to my "at least 25 pages per Chapter" goal. Chapter 11 may take a little longer. The timeline has become advanced enough I need to calculate when certain characters are expected to die. They may go early but, if I at least note their maximum lifetime, I won't forget to at least mention their passing if it impacts the story. My reference "book", "The Weyrs of Pern" is already 55 pages on it's own and it will probably never get 'published' except as occasional excerpts in the main story. I really enjoyed writing Chapter 9.
  11. Have you tried using Skype on your PC? It offers text only or video calling and is free as long as you connect over the Internet.
  12. I have an old, black rotary phone I hooked up to a car battery. It was really awkward to use until I found one of my wife's old hand bags that was large enough to hold it ... I only use the iPhone for backup.
  13. does a built in spell editor for your browser help catch spelling errors? I love the one built into Chrome gogo I create the chapters using OpenOffice and then transfer them to Google Docs. OpenOffice catches most of my spelling mistakes but Google Docs catches more as well as seeming to know when structure is wrong, I.e., there is an 'an' in the text and it knows it should be 'and'.
  14. For anyone who may be interested, I just finished Chapter 8 of ~30 for my HP + Dragonriders of Pern crossover. I now have to read it myself to catch all those annoying keyboard misses, spelling, grammar, and syntax mistakes. Then I will post it for my editing team to tear into. I never knew writing a book could take so long!
  15. more than two hours...I had to go to the bathroom twice... last time EVER I buy a Jumbo Gulp gogo You could have just filled it up again ...
  16. I've got 18 of ~25 pages done for Chapter 6. Wish I could find someone to help bounce plot ideas off of. My wife has finally finished the first three books and she just keeps saying 'Harry is different'. I need to know how he's different (as well as any of the other characters) and what I need to do to bring them back in line. Ah well, back to writing.
  17. It might actually be almost as fast to simply install the GoG version to a different folder. I have 4 different copies of Sacred 2, one is from GoG, they all run with no problems.
  18. The mongers I would have been referring to would be the hate mongers and war mongers and you-name-it mongers. The game isn't getting in the way, I'm writing (or trying to write) a book and spend less and less time elsewhere.
  19. Trouble is, I've never been on there 24/7. My participation has been spotty at best, so quitting cold turkey wouldn't be that hard for me. The biggest problem is that my daughter got me playing a game where we can help each other and it uses Facebook to allow us to connect. As much as I want to maintain contact with my daughter, I think we will just have to find another way. The IDEA of Facebook isn't the problem, it's the fact that they have become overrun by intolerant people, fear mongers, and rabid religious fanatics ... of all religions! I wonder what Facebook would do if everyone just up and quit?
  20. This is a pretty handy topic to post to when there has been or is pending a change in my life. <Rant> I have been almost caught 3 times now by an "Apple Repair" phishing scam on Facebook and have finally decided that enough is enough. If anyone is in contact with me via Facebook, I will no longer be using it after the end of this month. I value my hardware more than I value the backbiting artificial "community" that Facebook has become, so will stop using it. I haven't decided if I want to delete my account or just stop using it. Either way, after the end of the month Facebook and I are parting ways. If it weren't for the constant proliferation of scams, cons, and phishing attempts, I might put up with some of it but I now have actual work to perform with my computer and will not allow that to be compromised. I will still pop in here periodically but don't look for me on Facebook or any related application. </Rant> Ah, that felt good, even if I'm the only one who ever sees it!
