Finally going to do it.

Recommended Posts

This is it. Yesterday I had my last cigarette. I got that urge but I'm not going to do it. I figure I have a full tank of gas so I don't need to stop at the store. Don't stop ya can't buy right? Woke up this morning and I felt a bit differant in my lungs already.

Congrats!

Just gonna be strong when the urge calls, and you'll get through it.

Having the nasty habit myself, and can't see I'll quit in the nearest future :(

Furian. You are doing the absolute best thing you could ever to for yourself. Congratulations man and while in the process by all means post in need of support. Me and gogo both quit at the same time and it's been 6 months. Never fear. There will come a time when it won't bother you anymore. :(

Beautiful work Furian! I cannot say how happy I am to hear about your decision and success. As Schot said, we both quit about six months ago. That was a very big decision for me, smoking had riddled many paths and holes into my life. It had begun deciding the names of my friends, how I would eat, and what I would do.

Addiction is powerful, even more so when you aren't aware of it's presence. I sometimes have strange moments when I hug someone at work, and they're smokers...and I can tell. I notice that I notice almost immedietely when someone in a movie lights up and I notice myself smiling...sometimes in perhaps a very weak yearning, but not all so a bad thing because I haven't gone back to the deed yet.

Furian, keep posting to us about this. Shame on me and brad for not speaking about this sooner. Quitting smoking is one of the most important things in my life, and so is blogging, speaking and having fun with everyone, all of you , my friends, on this forum.

We can open up a new section, we can cover where smoking has taken us, we can chat about how we feel, what we've done, what smells better, what we have plans to do with all the time that not smoking liberates us from and we can compare weight gains :(

Most importantly, we can all breath some better

:)

Holy Hannah! I am glad to hear this.

You know I have been wanting to pull a Mom on you and nag a little bit. But I am very glad you decided to do this on your own. And doing it alongside 13000+ of your friends sounds like a great idea. The support will really help when things are the worst.

You know brother, our family is a little predisposed to addictions. "All things in Moderation" just never sunk in with us. So quiting anything we love is gonna be tough. But take one day at a time and improve your health. Improve your quality of life, and Mom will be smiling down on you.

Thank you Gogo and Schot for speaking out in support. That's gonna help a lot as the days ahead come and go.

I've been addicted to 3 things in my short 18 year old life... weed, porn and gaming. None of which I am addicted to now. The Architect in the second Matrix movie said it best when he said "Once again the problem is choice" and addiction is a choice and choosing not to be addicted anymore will free you from whatever your addiction may be. Good luck on your journey to a more healthy lifestyle, I wish you all the best.

Very well said Hacksaw, you sure your only 18? Yes it is a chioce. And I'm finally goin the execise that chioce (not the body yet, one thing at a time)

Thank Bro for not nagging, that would have gone the opposite. I had to make this chioce on my own. Thanks for the support. Our family may be predisposed to addictions, but once we decide something nothing hold us back also. Give'em Hell and Git'r Done.

Yes, we also inherited stubbornness and determination. So now you can put those to good use!

Quick lil note on how I handled the first few days. I treated the first week as if I had the flu and that I needed to recover. Everytime I didn't feel well, "had an urge or felt irritable", I just took a nap. I literally turned off the entire world for that first week. Absolutely nothing else mattered and I gave myself everything and anything I wanted. That first week was only about not smoking. :)

The only bad thing that can happen from quiting smoking is that you can put on weight, your body gets used to the hand to mouth action and you generaly start eating more althoug you probably won't notice you are eating more untill you start to put on weight.

A handyman we know carried a box of dry white bread-sticks (actual cut up pieces of whitebread, not the snack-food) with him. Whenever he felt the urge he just chewed one instead. Might help to satisfy the "habit"-problem.

Hardest thing is to redesign your habits when confronted with situations you normally would have had a smoke...and of course never to start again. (I.e. resisting the temptation to allow one cigarette as reward for 1,2,n weeks/months/years "not-smoking".)

I wish you every strength in mind for the challenges to come. Keep it up!

That was so smart Schot! Kudos!

Good work dude. Ive been trying for a while. It sucks when you get bored though, first thing I do is roll a smoke. What to replace it with?

I have a great metabalism so the eating wont effect me too much. I wanted to start running/Lifting and get my muscle mass back up. But I don't have the equip so thats out till I have more cash.

I was thinking of giving myself something to save for, like a new GPU or something. And each time I want one I'll just think Well, thats one more pay day I'll have to wait. I'll see how I go.

Edit:

Going to see how long I go today.

Sacred, take me. Keep my hands occupied!

Oh furian, I have a little technique for you. It worked for me but in the end I was weak so not entirely but it might work for you.

If you have something you can fiddle with in your hand try deep breathing every 20-40 seconds when you have the urge. Breathe in deeeeep and hold for a second and let it out slow.

It almost cures the urge I find.

I'm not Doing too bad really. Fidgety hands isn't an issue. My lungs on the other hand are. Had a really nasty cold last week that moved from a runny nose down into my lungs. Hacking and coughing 24/7. On top of that I was still smoking, made the issue even worse. My chiropractor has been having a very hard time trying to get my spine back in check. Thats when I said enough, no more smokin. So now I have the pleasure of kicking a cold that moved into my lungs and hacking up that nasty smoke lung. To stop smoking is a choice that you truelly have to believe in or your "attempt" to quit smoking is just a thought not an action.

Avliden, the deep breath is actually very nice, I can feel the differance and its only been three days. Oh and ya boredom or as Czevak put it "Hardest thing is to redesign your habits when confronted with situations you normally would have had a smoke". For me at work when I don't want to do something at work I reach for a smoke...... I'm getting allot of stuff done at work now instead of ducking out for a smoke I'm looking for more to do. It works for me.
