gogoblender 3,069
Please somebody, anybody... Is there a full proof, streak-free, grease-free, cheap way of doing this on a daily basis to keep the small mites of distraction off of our ocular onscreen periphery? Also, what about moisture on the screen... this mean no spraying them with Windex? gogo Link to comment

wolfie2kX 528
You dust every day with that? What about moisture...can you wet those? gogo No.. I don't have time to do a daily dusting... But when I do, I do use 'em. And no, you don't wet them. They've got a slight electrostatic charge so they attract and trap dust. Getting 'em moist would likely make that charge go away. They do work pretty good. Link to comment
gogoblender 3,069
Alright, I'll head out to the pharmacy now and see what they have. gogo Link to comment
Guest madDdog67
Most computer stores (Microcenter, etc) have some pre-moistened screen wipes in a pop plastic dispenser can. I have some of those...they're pretty handy actually, and if you're like me, and eat in front of the monitor (like I'm doing at this very moment), they're awesome for getting gravy & sauce off the screen. They're only slightly moist, but enough to get all the dust off. If I'm out of those, a very little slightly warm water on a wad of tp will work as well. I use the Swiffer thingie when I don't have the remnants of a previous meal on the screen to deal with Link to comment

Mixing the work and eat area can make for a dusty and food-filled screen. Have you noticed how it just builds up until one day...holee molee what is this stuff! Thanks for posting all the ideas! I'm kinda not a paper towel user too much, so much waste and it's expensive. I just got back from the drugstore and guess what I got...Microfiber cloth ...for only 2.20! Washable and apparently as awesome on screens as on expensive reading glass lenses: I once actually sprayed the screen with some kind of windex and the few drops on the glass way at the bottom kept going down into the interior of the screen itself. Screen went black for a wee bit but came back again^^ Can we wet these microcloths before wiping the screen or are they supposed to be used only dry? I'll also try staying away from the acetones and ammonia (worried about the plastic), and get some rubbing alcohol if that's okay for LCD screens? gogo Link to comment
cider_steve 26
I'm grateful to you Gogo for bringing this up, as my screen is a disaster, tbh ! It really get's bad when you're trying to attack something 'ingame' only to find that it's some pizza stuck to the monitor screen ! Sheesh ! I give it a wipe over with a duster, but I'm unsure what to do about the stuff actually stuck to the screen surface. I daren't try force/scraping, as this will undoubtedly cause scratches/damage to it. Steve. Link to comment
gogoblender 3,069
For the stuff stuck on screen like food bits or something I would think you'd need a slightly damp cloth or microcloth like the one I bought then delicately daub the offending food stuff detritus till they dissolve and are absorbed by the cloth. Small repeated daubs all over the screen where the foods are will, I think, eventually remove it. At the point where you have a clean screen, you can just keep on using a micro cloth daily to keep dust and build up off the screen. gogo Link to comment
chattius 2,523
I normally notice that I have to clean my glasses (eye surgeries after accident) when I do writings at computer. So I take this cleaning papers, clean my glasses and as long they are still wet use the yet clean backside for the monitor. So I do it quiter regulary at least one time a week. The manual of the screen names the brand of glasses cleaning papers as okay for its monitors too. Our 3 year old twins are currently pointing at intersting parts of the screen with their fingers, so this nearly automatical at least two times a week cleaning keeps fat dirt from burning in. The cooling slits of PC/monitor, or keyboard, or optics from DVD laser or computer fans I use a small vacuum cleaner with a flexible pipe and a bellows(?) to blow the dust towards the cleaner: Bought bellows for my old 6*6 centrimetres 50 year old Rollei camera but they are really useful for several cleaning purposes. Smurfed 0
Usually department stores sell electrical screen cleaning products with their electrical merchandise. Usually I don't get anything more than dust on my screen, so it's just a simple task of swiping a duster over it to clean it. But on the odd occasion that a grubby little child-finger leaves marks, or some other form of dirt builds up, I picked up a specialised mist spray and chamois for just such an eventuality... And it does work, and only cost a few dollars Link to comment
masteff 64
But you still have to clean the INSIDE of the screen to remove stuck electrons and such... I prefer this one. Link to comment
essjayehm 58
Lol, Masteff... I guess that's OK if you have a CRT (with the room for the little pooch), but for us flatscreen users, I guess we'll have to keep looking... Heh... got to thinking that I have cleaned my screen once (with my eyeglass cleaning cloth, no cleaner or w/e) and I haven't touched it since (so no streaks) but I would hazard there's some dust build-up that should be wiped off at some regular intervals. Hrm... I should re-double my efforts at making funny posts here at DM, seeing as a lot of you hooligans like to eat at your computer... *runs off to buy stock in Acer* Link to comment
Zodiac-Mindwarp 24
Guess I should stop using Windex and a paper towel This is exactly what I use. A little Windex sprayed on a paper towel, and then used to wipe the screen. Always seems to work fine for me. Link to comment
lujate 576
As long as you spray the Windex on the towel and not the screen, it should be OK. Link to comment

I knew when it was starting up, and I often times try to break the habit and eat in the kitchen...but I'll usually just end up scoffing my food down extra quickly so that I can run back to a monitor. gogo Link to comment

chattius 2,523
I forgot to mention, if you eat at computer: If the dirt on the screen is moving, has fur, 4 legs and is around 4 inches: Wait till the mouse finished eating the pizza rests and call your local cat. If the dirt on the screen is moving, has fur, 4 legs and is around 8 inches: Wait till the rat finished eating the pizza rests and call your local big cat. If it is 2 inches, has 6 legs and an exoskeleton: For the savety of your screen -DON'T call your local woodpecker. Wait till a 8 inch, 4 legged furry animal ate it and call your local big cat after. If it looks like a dead pixel but is moving: We had a case of Gewitterfliegen (translates thunderstorm-flies = thrips) at work once. Two of the beasts moving betẃeen the protection layer and the LCD layer of the 24 inch screen. The common sense solution worked: turn of the monitor, move it in a dark room and put a light above and outside the screen. Since the pixels were moving there was no need for: Link to comment

I have always eaten at my pc.............well, at home anyway. Get shot if I did it at work ! The main thing that gets the gunge is my keyboard. Both with crumbs and sticky goo. But it's great that this thread came up, because the screen has got gradually worse with time. Plenty of times I've sneezed/coughed on the screen + I am a messy eater, so food bits have spattered on the screen too. Some great tips have been posted, and are mucho appreciated...............and thanks to the main man Masteff for the smiles too. Later, Steve. Link to comment
gogoblender 3,069
After all this focus on the screens and eating areas, it was some effort to get the screen all nice and smooth again, to the point where after that initial attack of the daubs and moisturizers I'm not at the point where all I have to do every day now is just do a quick wipe with the good year cloth and the world shines through. Hallelujahs! gogo Link to comment
