The Dracunculus worm is a tiny parasite that burrows into the victims skin, causing a sensation of extreme fire as it crawls around. Ancient healers extracted the worms by twirling them around a stick - this is one fanciful explanation of why symbols such as the Rod of Asclepius and the Caduceus, which this pipe resembles, became associated with healing and medicine.
