My own day: late evening I will drive to Frankfurt airport to pick up a new Au-Pair/guest daughter. Foreign office asked if we would accept another this year. We didn't signed for one, but we did an okay for the reserve list. Seems our ratings are very high so we were very high in the reserve list. It is not normal Au Pair, more a student doing a year in a foreign place as a practicum for studying diplomacy. She is from Dutch Caribbean, so spoken language is not that a problem.

I can even play the Dutch national anthem on my tuba. Wilhelm, prince of Nassau, was born just 12 kilometres away in Dillenburg. The Wilhem-Tower at Dillenburg. I think it are Dutch, Belgium and German flags for the countries who paid the repair.

So lot of dutch tourists and in average one per year manages to do a crash in the responsibility of our volunteer firefighters. Mainly not used to bridges between hills and very high wind forces. My closest neighbour (less than 1 kilometre) is from Netherlands.

 

Im delighted and jealous of you at the same time.. i wanna be the next au pair daughter!

Well my system is back online after spending 2 weeks in a box... We're currently working on our "home office".
Moving in over the holidays has been a bit of a pain, especially with very few days off for me... The wife has 2,5 weeks off and I hate that

Hah over 2 months have passed and everything's still a work in progress is what it feels like. We keep working on the house, but there's just such a looong list of chores we want to finish up before it feels 'done'. And big ones as well, like redoing the garden front and back. Money just seems to fly out of our accounts lately with little things...

On the plus side, the racing setup is coming along nicely. It's been put together, now it just needs a coat of paint. Probably going to slap some primer on that thing tomorrow morning, so I can have the whole thing ready for my day off!

We moved to our house after university: 1 kid, second on the way. It was a nearly 300 year old wooden patchwork house with stall, barns and a watchtower. It belonged my grandpa. With 3 siblings and 15 cousins we had to pay nearly 95% of the house even it was from grandpa. It seems like if you finish one major repair the next is coming. And it is under cultural heritage management so repairs or upgrades are a lot of paperwork.

I have mailed all firefighters in surroundings to look for old oak wood from house ruins. I did classes at a freeland house museums to repair old houses. But the most important were the retired carpenters, stone cutter, basked weavers, woodworker, in the village. They had a lot of time and fun teaching me.

One of the first things we did was the garden: hens, potatoes, vegs. Double function: relaxing and saving time and money because of less visits to the supermarket which is 35 minutes for one direction.

Today is the voting about the Digital Services Act in the European Community. The law would force big internet companies to remove illegal stuff uploaded from others on there servers quickly once informed.  If not penalties can be go as high as 6% of the yearly moneyflow of a company.

In one of my modding threads I mentioned that I'm very busy at the moment because I've been promoted.

I work as a stationary traffic controller.
That doesn't sound particularly interesting at first, but it's an enormously varied job in which you travel a lot around the country.

I would even say that I have the best job in the world.

I have no idea if that's even a correct translation of the job title.

Overall, it is an independent control of the parking situation and detection of violations in private parking lots.

There are different control methods and types, sometimes it's just about attendance.

Often we also mount or dismount our penalty signs.
The working hours can be freely arranged, I am paid by the hour and usually have no overtime.

But I do not mind overtime since most of my work is driving around and viewing landscape.

bravo on the hard work!  I read your answer to Steve regarding the description and im aglow of your job... getting to travel is a blessing, and if the pay is good, two for one!!

So may I ask .. lke what of events trigger you have to make a visit... do you get metrics reported to you about an *imbalance* somewhere and you have to go as kind of monitor to understand why numbers aren't joshing and find solutions and place them or can you give out tickets to people not doing their work?

Theres three companies in canada that provide telecom service, Bell, Telus, Rogers ( i work for the latter) and yesterday was something never seen before.. and outage across the entire network that lasted more than a day with some areas still not in service yet.

They are *trying to understand what the problem was*

have no explanation for why redudancies which were supposed to be work across Canada didnt, and still no reason yet for why Canada just went..Black

no debit cards working, no networks closing, most of downtown montreal yesterday started closing early because vendors had to revert to good ole cash...

My two year old granddaughter played in the garden and suddenly yelled in pain. We were all running. My son was closest and said: 'All okay. Only a wart-biter.'. She tried to catch a grass hopper and it was one of the very rare wart-biters. The name is because they have big mandibles to hunt insects. Once they bite they wouldn't let loose when in danger. My son made her open the palm and relax for a while. The bite was loosened and we had a whining granddaughter and a wart-biter which was flying away in search for smaller prey.

In former times people let them bite into warts and then quickly pulled the insect away with the wart between the mandibles. So in this case it was a wound with some bleeding but because the insect was loosening grip no flesh missing.

Well I goofed up today!

First off, hi everyone  been a while...

Just to be clear: I have a bit of a sweet tooth. During my lunch break I went for a walk, ended up at a grocery store picking up a bag of sugar free candies. Seemed a little healthier than a regular bag of sweets. Well, maybe it would be - if I could control myself. By the time I pretty much polished off the entire bag (I love that saying by the way) while working, my belly had been rumbling. That had me wondering. And actually reading the label.

Why yes, the baggy told me, you, my good sir, are a moron because consuming copious amounts of these sweets will work as a laxative  it's been 5-6 hours and I'm still not OK  send help

Phone rings: 'Congrats for becoming grandpa again.' 'Huh?'

Explanation was 5 minutes later by my wife: Our second studies medicine and robotics because she wants to research in artificial limbs. She had to do 6 weeks in an ambulance car. Called to a heart attack they did first aid and called a spedalist. The specialist moved to the ambulance car and they drove to the hospital. Our daughter was ordered to drive the car of the specialist back. Half way to hospital she was ordered drive to a house with a lonely wife very short before birth. She was told to prepare all for a house birth, a baby doc would be on the way. But she did it before the baby doc was there.

So she posted a picture: 'Even if not planed , My first.'

With the baby in her arms...

 

And my cousine in France read it.

She said she was considering to change from orthopedics to pediatrics because of the strong emotions...

For about a day. But she decided for artificial limbs when she was 16. A classmate lost both his arms when both hands had contact to high voltage. All nerves up to the shoulderblades burned away. Before she was robotics, then she decided to go medical robotics.

I was planing computer sciences, then my older sis got brain cancer in her last year at university. I decided to extend my army time from the drafted 18 month to 12 years, 3 years at army university. Then re-union, unit disbanded and no free places at computer sciences so I did mathematics...

Pentacost weekend with its free monday is normally meetings with families of flight club members. Sunday was a bit shocking when a crash of a plane was reported mid in Wetzlar. I did firefighting command at our local place ánd not flying because of my whiplash recovery when the call from Wetzlar came. Our second was flying with our vintage glider with her boyfriend but she luckily reported perfect weather, no problems. Minutes later it was sure: none of our planes. Turned out that it was a glider starting In Wetzlar which went into a dive from 500 metres, hitting a house and then a car. Pilot dead, car driver injured.
