I've been selected to get installed a brand new Cable Modem, so I had to test it with the new gear :

Pretty amazing if I compare to what I had back in June :

You are not alone Etherian. Mine shows 2.55 Mbps down and 0.43 Mbps up.

My DSL is down, so I have my 4G phone tethered to my PC via USB. I expected to have to shut down all non-essential programs due to limited bandwidth. Just ran the test, and the 4G smoked my DSL. 3.18 Mbps down and 7.90 Mbps up. :woot:

:sun:... old topic

We’ve been working on improving our internet speeds at home. Schot and I both work from home; he uses our home internet, while my work provides me with a dedicated landline and strong cable connection. Looking back at the speeds we had years ago, I’m amazed we managed with such low bandwidth, especially since we were 24/7 gamers in the Sacred HC community, then moved to German Ogame, and later to Diablo 3.

We have a great internet deal here in Montreal. Our base plan is $44 CAD per month, with a $6 discount, making it $38 monthly for 400 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload. This is more than enough for Schot’s work, which involves heavy use of imagery, apps, spreadsheets, and multiple voice and video apps, as well as my light browsing during the day and evening.

I was kind shocked at how  fast I the work connection is though...whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa?

I’m curious about the internet plans you’re all using and how much you’re paying for them. We have members from all over the world, so it would be interesting to see the different deals and speeds people are getting this year. Feel free to share your internet speeds, costs, and any thoughts on the value you’re getting. Let’s compare and see how our experiences stack up globally!

I guess you managed with low bandwidth while duo hardcore gaming because gaming barely needs any "bandwidth". For running two diablo 3 clients at the same time 1% of what you posted here now would be super comfortable. Only patch day would be a pain and d3 had patch day days ahead of a season so more than enough time for downloads even in that case.

Where the hell did you get that number from? Was that from the secret test of his subspace transmitter? If anyone had one of those around here I would have thought it would be Lindor. :)

I once had 1 Gbps for $90/month; It was not worth the cost. Now I have 300 Mbps at only $40.00/month in U.S. Dollars.:agreed:

U know, everyone around me and at work has huge fascination with Speed... I didnt think we needed more than 120 GB BUT... when Fizz (current provider) offered us more than 3x our speed! at LOWER PRICE..how could we resist...and Brad said that he actually noticed he was more productive at his job with the larger file sizes he works with..in fact after seeing the speed on our work computer we're kinda interested in seeing whether any host would be game to let us try for a month free? Would be an interesting test to see if this would yield greater productivity.

Schot was a HUGE player of Tron...and always used to play at lowest settings so  that he could compete more effectively with other players online... I know a lot of my cousins wont leave Bell because of the much acclaimed *Fibre* ...

Thanks for sharing the costs and speed Steve, it looks like were both getting some great value

The post from Flooxim you already linked in the first post showed 20.94Mbps download speed.
You turned the number into 20.74 and then put GB behind it. GB is a file size not a speed. And turning it into a speed like "GB per second" would have been so insane that I suggested the "subspace transmitter" as only possible explanation.
I guessed 20.94 ->20.74 was a simple mistake when typing the value by hand and "GB" instead of "Mbps" was just some Giga Brainfart :)

But then:

GB is still not a speed... What's going on here?

But lower settings should only affect the client side of things. Lowering settings helps when your pc isn't fast enough. It shouldn't affect the connection at all.

Well of course it is warp nine point... oh, you mean the internet connection. I had around 6Mbps download for a long long time and nowadays its about 2 or 3 times as fast. I don't intend on using the measuring site however.
It has no limit on the actual amount of data.
The upload rate is a lot lower, but I don't really upload anything so I wouldn't know the speed limit there.

I was talking to SChot last night about the gaming he was doing with TRON.. he mostly likes FPS (PVP) games which rely a lot upon upload speed, which we never really had a lot of .. he had to keep game settings low because, as you mentioned, most of the bottle neck can come from the comp itself which he has a lot of ...but when competing against others, upload speed adds to importance so that you can stay ahead of the Tron Disc :ninjastar:

he was A D D I C T E D to this game

ps I also use FAST sometimes to gauge speed...though usually when I write in the word speed test on google chrome it shots me up the google internet speed

Watched a couple minutes of the video. Never seen this game before. Reminds me a bit of quake 3. Obviously with my limited eyesight and no knowledge of the game it's quite hard to follow what's going on there.

May the moos be with you :cow:

...Now I imagine two of those nice black and white cows. One with almost no black spots and one with almost no white spots trying to hit each other with an electric fence :)
Now I also know where the word "fencing" comes from :)

StarMoos would have been so cool...
please, someone, help me return to reality...
Reality returns to me and I notice why this mo(o)vie could never happen. Someone would latch onto the fact that the white cow fights a black cow and the black cow is depicted as "evil" and therefore this is racism... All innocent and happy fun ends when you apply the rules of reality :(

Edit: Oh sneaky, sneaky gogo. I just noticed you can edit your posts without them showing that they have been edited.
Those Jedi mind tricks don't work on me! :)

My result is a little skewed the wrong way, I don't remember our upload being higher than our download  we've been on fiber now for a while. We don't need higher speeds than this IMO.

You have fiber, so symmetrical whereas we dont really have fiber so we have to pay more for the upload.  Most of the time, upload speed is more expensive because most of the tech around here isnt fiber unless you pay a lot for it... 200 is VERY fast Timo... you probably never even break a sweat if, when you game
