Diablo: Immortal (Mobile & PC)

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

since Diablo Immortal got released today for mobile & most regions,

and tomorrow for PC (beta),

I'm wondering:

Who's gonna give it a try & play?

And if you dare, where ? (Server Region & Server Name)

(PS: Just found out charnames are 'unique' per server not per account, unlike in Diablo3,  and (imho) unfortunately a lot more like in PoE,

eg.  Diablo Immortal is only one char=account with name 'X' allowed for region 'Y' on server 'Z' )

It's gonna be on PC?  Then sign me up.  I have been ignoring it since the whole "don't you guys have phones?" fiasco at BlizzCon, so I didn't even realize they finally listening to which way the wind was blowing and are bringing it to PC.  :bounce:

  • The title was changed to Diablo: Immortal (Mobile & PC)

Well I won’t be able to play without some fandangling, since Belgium and the Netherlands have been cracking down on gambling in games (like lootboxes mainly) Blizzard has decided to just not release the game to our markets at all. I mean, they could’ve just taken that stuff out…

I will need to mess around with VPN’s to get the game and run the risk of my account getting banned.

No mods doesn't really matter, D3 didn't allow mods and it was still worth playing through with every character. Got my money's worth and then some IMO.  I just don't really go for the end-game grind.

I'm not super fond of what I'm hearing about DI being pay to win.  Going by a lot of comments, apparently the game is shoving micro-transactions in your face at every turn?

isnt the pay part only for cosmetics ? I havent read more, but I saw some bits that said something about that... Blizzard is VERY clever at getting money and understanding and having the money to put into play very long term revenue channels

:)

Soooo this is my take on me playing after you first posted about it.  I put it on my phone and Ipad. They loaded up smoothly, played very well. Beautiful game, great sounds... but i was dissapointed that theyre same character classes as d3...nothing new? :O

So it comes off as ...Bl.izzard redoing their mechanics so that their basic D3 game can get channelled into as many different machines as possible to sell comsmetics ?

The positive take away... it CAN be relatively well played on a phone...but since Ive been playing almost exclusively on Desktop... no matter how good that small screen can push it, ill never go past seeing how small it is cuz my larger desk top is at home...thats a big friction point for me.   Rotluchs I whole heartedly relate. Now...heres something that may trump all that.  What if ALL my gaming friends were able to cross channel with me from their own preffered systems... half of them from mobiles, then some ipads, and than another huge swath from DeskTops... could this not be that Blizzards new magic power that were looking for ... to just be able to log into desk top and other players we love playing with can play with us on their phones? im wondering if this means I can play much more time with my nephews this way...this could possibly be a game changer.

Yes im disappointed about the new new stuff..

but maybe more will come.

rottluchs I think i see that if i do connect it will put me on north american servers ... do we have a choice is the choice irrevocable , and what have you chosen?

no gogo, they do not only sell cosmetics,

yes, they also don't sell you "bis" items directly..

but they artifically slow down progression drastically at some point, it becomes reeally really slow, so I have read.

and what they then want you to buy, is boosters that allow to find more & better items in dungeons, a lot faster ( increased drop rate/quantity).

you can also level up your gems which gives you more power, by buying the materials you need to do so. those can all be found ingame without spending real money so I have understood, yes. but at a much much slower rate, at some point you will perhaps feel like you won't be able to move on "to the next level" if you dont spend cash, I dont know.. im far away of even completing the first aera act.. I guess im level 13 or so :)

a mayor draw back and a big concern, is server structure, your next question:

in diablo 3, you had basically one big server/realm for america, one for europe and one for asia I believe.

now, they get further divided, eg. europe gets first split up into several countries eg. Germany, Italy, France,

and once again, then they have each their own sub-server shard/realm, which is finally where you chars are created& stored.

a north american char cant join someone in europe. okay thats the same it used to be in d3 I think.

but, you even cant join someone from france when you are on a German realm,

yes, not even if youre from the same server region if you happen to have chars on american server A and your friend on american server B.

it totally sucks and renders the whole 'play anywhere' cross platform idea useless imho

ad absurdum..

long story short: if you click on the server name  shown on the start up main screen, and change to any where else, you will always have to start over from scratch.

plus, it makes it harder to gather up and play together like we used to in path of exile, sacred, or diablo 3..

Most of the post-release reviews have said the same.  Remember all the pre-release reviews had micro-transactions disabled, that's why the game is so well-praised by early media.

Fan reviews say the game plays great, same old addictive APRG gameplay we all know.  That is, until level 35 or so when drops dry up and it starts to become impossibly hard. At this point you're hooked and you think, "I guess I'll drop a few bucks on some extra gear so I can beat this boss."

Someone calculated that to completely 100% max out a single character with all the best gear and gems you would have to spend upwards of $100,000.

Ha ha, what?! Man...

Worst thing is that many people will actually sink money into this. Oh well.

im not there yet, I havent hit "that wall" ..

I will play it and try to complete at least the story acts / main campaign. lets see how it goes..

but the reason why im not doing it even right now right away, has been mentioned by gogo as well:

I, for one, am also surprised/disappointed to see not even one single new character class as well?

why did they miss out on that one, I'll never understand...

I would hate "feeling like I have to buy ingame currency/materials or temporary boosters"

I would prefer almost everything else,

eg. a  wow-like monthly subscription based model, if it was cheap enough to equal lets say... 60 € max per year..

or pay once each time to unlock  next act, some sort of episodic/season DLC model,

or if they  would sell permanent stuff..
much like inventory slots which I believe they have,
they could just do permanent boosters to mf, drop rate, run speed and such..

anyway , whatever I get for my cash I'd like to keep. having to buy temporary stuff has always been bad so far.

Im already curious how far ill get without spending a single dime, and then, if/when it stops being fun..

but as said, itll have to wait.. busy with torchlight infinite until 18.june.

forgot to mention:

blizzard staff at least already confirmed that they might look into the server situation and see if they could change it , in a way that leads to less "fragmentation" of the player base

The game we talk about, is a harmful way of money making. By creating a game addiction, the customer shall be drained to the max. Tell me in a few simple words: Where is the difference to drug addiction or alcoholism?
As soon as you are addicted, you come back frequently to buy your shot. Does not matter if it is opium, booze, or an item upgrade, you have just bought for 10 bucks. The company wants to see cash and the only thing that matters is, that the addict is sending money in constantly. What happens to you, if you loose your job, ruin your family, your life, or your health, is none of their concern.
The governments of Denmark and Belgium acted absolutely correct and protected their citizens from such a sh!t.

hey Dax! :)

well imho there's still a big difference between being "addicted" to a game or harmful, mind altering substances..

yes,  those "lootbox" orientated games can be very harmful too to some individuals, at times, just like the real "money gambling games" you find in casinos..

but, personally I believe it's bull:eek:, the trend of companies releasing such games, but the prohibition of them, as well. thats a little bit over reacting,  no?

what I see endangered by those game the most,

is not peoples finances, lives, health or sanity,
but simply just the loads of fun you could have with it if these mechanics and monetarization models werent there..

simply put, I "hate" every developer or game, in which it becomes too obvious the company is interested way more in our money than instead of us just having fun.

imho it's not all set into stone regarding diablo immortal, maybe they give in to the feedback all over the net..

but, it still is sad to see what they had in mind with this game.. milking the cash cow; trying to attract both as many little fish swarms and big whales at the same time, or what it's called..

they almost caught me too on first attempt, as well :) but they forgot to fix their fishing net,

their impractical server structure + no fresh char class left two loop holes in it through which I escaped before they pulled the thing out of the water.

Videogame addiction and massive consumption of video games is slowing down your mind and has a tremendously negative effect, especially on young folks.
Which are the future of any country. Unfortunately, the whole article is hidden behind a member wall in the "Der Spiegel" magazine. Is it overreacting
then to keep sh!t away from the population? I think not. We all know that the Prohibition did not work out, so the change must come from the inside.
Example: After taking a swim, your brain will release all brain chemistry related drugs at once for easily 15 minutes in a row. Thats the key. The
secret is, to trick your kids into the pool and let them swim for a while. A big, fat win for all sides, except the sad-faced gaming industry, which
stands crying and alone outside.

What shocks me is the completely ruthless buisness behavior in the US. I tell you straight in your face, that US companies have no problem with it to
devastate even their own population, as long as they can mooch off money. Example opioid crisis, or even worse, the story with the endocrine disruptors.
Scary stuff. Since you speak German, I will gladly link the whole story on "arte" for you. Just let me know.

Speaking of good clean fun, why not play old games? The 90s are full of flawless videogame gems. Bug free mostly, cheap and they run on the oldest
machines. Modders keep things up to date, even continue working on the game. There are infinite numbers of rpgs, shooters, tactical games, slashers,
what ever your heart desires, you will find it. Imho today, you will hardly find quality stuff like Deus Ex, Xcom, Ultima series, Jagged Alliance
and so on. Games of today simply aim for visual overload, often combined with a ridiculously poor story. Followed by user binding, personal data
collection, including data sale by the game company, merchandising and more and more often, the nasty tricks we talked about before.

Conclusion from my side:
Just stay away from such games. Even drug addicts believe, that they are in control of the drug. The sad truth is: No. They are not. The drug controls
its user. The addicts are either to stubborn to accept it, too optimistic, or too dense.

Here's some info about the whole pay2win system in Diablo Immortal:

Forbes writes: Oh Yes, ‘Diablo Immortal’ Is Absolutely Pay-To-Win, Eventually

Just wanted to chime in on the we're all adults but not everyone playing is an adult... With the way the laws are set up, Blizzard would actually have to put an 18+ label on the game  and operate under a gambling license *if* what I think the problematic mechanics could be. Basically you're not allowed to have minors gambling on something representing actual currency and there would be some necessary form of identification. Mainly, the problem here (in the Netherlands) would be the ability to monetize your lootbox items. In CS:GO for instance, I can buy the skins themselves on the marketplace if I want to, but I cannot use cases and keys

However this quote from the Dutch website Tweakers.net suggests that the actual economic value that these lootboxes represent should not be the issue:

Quote

It is obvious that Blizzard will not release the game due to legislation against loot boxes in Belgium. The Belgian Gaming Commission applies strict rules against loot boxes in games. If they can be purchased with money and if chance plays a role in obtaining the content, they are in violation of the gambling law. As a result, many free-to-play games do not appear in Belgium.

It is striking that Blizzard does not release the game in the Netherlands either. According to the Dutch Gaming Authority, a loot box is only a game of chance if its content represents an economic value. That is, it should be possible to trade the virtual content for real money. As far as is known, it is not possible to sell virtual items for money in Diablo Immortal.

But in short, yeah, games with lootboxes are seen as a big issue here.
And I don't mind some kind of cosmetic microtransaction system. But pay2win, naaaaaahhhhh...

Thanks for the info, I had no idea those laws actually existed, let alone that they were being enforced. But I'm glad they are, as kids today are mostly clueless as to what real life is.

Taken it off my phone as well... Flix's headsup  about hitting thirty five and seeing all the drops dry up kinda spooked me... and rotluchs, it would have been phonemonal to actually have a A class game like this dance across all the platforms, but I cant get over those memories of how money fragmented our beloved Sacred 2..it hit hard we found out that a lot of the players we had been playing with all year got imprisoned across all those geo enforced areas with no warning on the play boxes

gogo

ps i have thoughts about how games were kind of an *undercover* way to get to the populations of the *vulnerable*  who can get legally hooked into the emotionally computed highs of gaming (Dax) .. more on that later, but happy to see its being recognized, addressed, and in fact enforced (netherlands ) ..its a great convo and can only bring eyes to where the real game is being played at with some heart felt tears about how our futures seem to be extraordinarly good  at getting money from our trigger buttons

soooo ... last night just before retiring, saw the button for this app upon my ipad screen  (strange, i just "forgot" to remove it from there there too :P )  and decided to play a few levels....

Damn you Blizzard.. you,re too good!

The Ipad's larger screen is significantly better than playing on a mobile, the controls are buttery smooth, perfectly placed, and the game play in huge battles is especially delicious.  I was playing Demon Hunter, and they have tweaked this game so well to where Im just hungry for more drops and, with an early morning wake up today find my gaze keeps returning to that ipad screen for the most evil reasons
