DarkMatters website - Looking for feedback regarding Forum speed for post openings or completions.

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone morning!

This seems to happen every once in a while.  Few years back the speed of opening posts became interminable and we had to make changes to the site.  Just lately when I click on posts, its seems like I'm getting a extra one second or 1.5 seconds.

There's always a number of downloads happening with members or guests downloading, but even with the increase in numbers, the wait, at least to me, seems like an annoyance.

anyone else here who opens posts regularly notice this, or is still the same, lets say from two and a half weeks to go now?

Thanks as always for the fanship, wishing y'all your day of beauty Moos!

I have posted a lot recently, but in my head I did not link the delays to the site. Yes sometimes there are like 5-10 second delays on posting or opening a post but so far nothing has failed and it did not impact me much. I thought it was on my end. Can also not say how long this has been happening...

Edit: This took around 4.5 seconds to post (I measured it)

great feedback, thanks SLD... now that I also caught the length of time it takes a post to complete, we'll have a look at the site this weekend

Sorry for downtime last night! Maintenance for ye good websites as we get all ready for some new upgrades.  We got some errors last night, and Schot made decision to take all the sites off line while he began maintenance.  If you get errors or slow time, please report it here, and we'll probably continue maintenance next weekend or a weekday coming up..  We'll try and get a notice up with time for everyone so that any large work or articles being written can clear.

We now return you to your daily DarkMatters... joy!

I've just done a couple posts that took some serious posting time again so I guess whatever you did was only a temporary fix...

Edit: yep, this one liner took 4 seconds again, and it gets a lot worse when the post is longer...

Edit2: Just had a post that took more than a minute to go through...

Thanks SLD! I noticed slow time for some posts to complete as well... Forum hosting is an art, we'll see some more options this weekend, perhaps a new engine upgrade is in order

All I can say is that it's not a constant issue. It shifts all the time and I haven't noticed a pattern yet.
The only thing I'm always wondering about is what the 50-80 permanent "guests" are doing here all day :)

Edit: Forgot to measure this one, but it was certainly too fast to measure anything anyway. So right now everything is fine :)

You're right... I've done some posts today and see that the speed is back to normal, at least for me...this could be an issue from hoster as well, we're having a looking at their *purported* maintenance hours

:)

If you want to do some testing on the speed, I've found that the "post time" spikes correlate with "page load time" spikes. Makes sense, obviously. But that also means you can "simulate" a post by clicking the "WHAT'S NEW!" button. For me that results in a page load time that is more around a medium size post so right now it's less than 2 seconds. When bad times are around it'll take 6-30+ seconds depending on "how bad" it is...
So if the problem doesn't remain "fixed", we could try that method every hour or so to see whether it's linked to daytime or any other metric we can think of. At least we can easily test and log when it's present and when it's not.

No, I did not. But I also post in "bursts". I come online check out the "what's new" section and follow up on everything that happened since my last visit than check out what happened "while" I wrote my new posts etc. and when I'm the last that has done something I log off again. Those bursts are usually multiple hours long and may occur more than once per day. It's just the only way I can keep up with the forum activity :)

If the good speed keeps up, lets hope its enough to get you through one of your writing bursts which we're delighted to read...

Are you spending those hours with the forum's response window open or do you write the post in a note pad first before copy paste?

We all know we do the first one, but I've lost vocal chords in loud yells after losing a few posts...and still ... I keep doing it

Indeed, Rommel. Those Google bots drop in often. They take a look see to ensure that we maintain our impeccable decorum and consistently gentlemanly demeanor.:hooyaah:

Same on the first one, but I haven't lost anything directly related to that. The only post I lost so far was some immensly well executed user error :)

And so my burst begins...

Edit: and now it ends again. this one was quite short, less than an hour. Site was quick and responsive all through.

I actually had one quite delayed post today (more in the 5++ seconds range), but everything else went quite well. I even just thought for a moment, that I might have lost a post because it went through so quickly that I didn't even notice it was properly posted already :)
