Shinryuu 23 Posted August 31, 2024 Posted August 31, 2024 So in my quest to get this game finally working in Linux, I just went the VM route and it seems to work. Had to use Win7 as nothing supports WinXP currently trying out vbox since Qemu/KVM is a pain to setup, but there is a passthrough route for my iGPU (albeit very annoying). The issue I am facing is that there's the graphical issues. Normally I'd just play and deal with it, but the problem with the CA icons means it's impossible to see if CA's are ready or not. Basicly they are permanently whitish and don't show any change based on cooldown (It seems they are permanently on 12.5% cooldown or something). The icons are also darker than normal, and the CA screen makes it hard to distinguish which CA's are memorized and which aren't. Also not a big deal. Just hoping someone ran into this themselves and is familiar with a fix. I'm assuming it's a GPU issue and therefore I'm probably stuck in Virtual Box. No setting seemed to work. My guess is that the opacity is messed up somehow. Just asking in case anyone knows. On min settings the game still kinda runs like ass but tbh I'd be very happy to finally play the game after so long. 1

I know nothing about tech, but for this ingame problem it might help to know, that the mouse cursor "lights up" when the chosen CA is ready. If that "light up" is visible it might help. From a gameplay perspective I however can't really come up with reasonable scenarios where knowing when a combat art is ready would matter at all. I hope someone comes along who can help you with the general underlying graphics problem. It might also help looking into different versions of the game. There is an unofficial patch 2.29 and an hd mod/patch that each might make the game more compatible with modern hardware etc.
Shinryuu 23 Posted September 1, 2024 Author Posted September 1, 2024 I actually tried playing on one of my high lvl chars where this does not matter. Game crashes as soon as a decent number of enemies are there. So the whole virtual GPU can't handle it. Like many textures get loaded in a delayed manner, and this gets worse if more stuff in on screen and eventually it just crashes. Guess I have to stick with S1 a little longer. At this point I'm ready to just start hooking up my old win7 machine that can run it for sure, as long as I can find the electricity cable (it's around here somewhere). 1

Sadly I know nothing about Linux so I can't help with alternatives here... Also can't find much on people playing Sacred on Linux. Most helpful I could find was this guy making the pureHD mod work on Linux: https://darkmatters.org/forums/index.php?/topic/72318-sacred-downloads-purehd-mod-for-sacred/#comment-7137518 1
Shinryuu 23 Posted September 2, 2024 Author Posted September 2, 2024 Thanks for the reply. This is Sacred 2. Not sure why someone marked this Sacred Underworld (It's incorrect). Sacred Underworld runs perfectly in wine. I just had to disable video as for some reason video's crash the game. I think I edited the config or something and set video=0. Game runs perfectly. Like I can run it for 8-10 hours without crashes, graphical bugs or anything. Loading is instant, performance is godlike (although tbh my computer is much better than my old windows one, i3 gen1 vs i7gen11). GPU is onboard but even that is way better. Even tried dgvoodoo2 on 32 bit wine, and it gives a page fault on the DX9 dll, so I think that is a wine issue but wouldn't know. The physX stuff is pretty easy as the game simply returns .dll errors if that happens and it's quite clear to see if physx isn't properly installed (need to use wine installer, therefore only wine32 possibly works afaik unless wine64 can install it from redist, haven't tried that yet...). 1

I read your post from my phone in a rush on the to weekend vacation I remember not being able to see the tag for which forum from the mobile skin. I just changed changed out underworld to sacred 2 and added it to all the root forums in this section as well SLD thanks for the tremendous research for helping here, and maybe this bump will also add to getting the post visible to others who may have solutions for running in Linux . I remember some vaguely in the past, perhaps a search through google and DarkMatters can surface even more info gogo
gogoblender 3,583 Posted September 2, 2024 Posted September 2, 2024 Woo Hoo...looks like someone joined up here on the forums to help out and got it working on Steam @MasterN gogo

Then of course both my answers are usless as I followed the title of "sacred underworld...". I did not know that Info wasn't from you and your posts themselves contained no info on the game it was supposed to be about.

I just thought this was exclusive Sacred 2 troubleshooting, hence lack of data. But I think I noticed some Sacred posts in here too? Not sure. I'm at the point where I'm pretty much sure this is a hardware issue. Games that were already wonky to begin with just get even wonkier on hardware that didn't exist when they were made. Theme Park World/Theme Park Inc are also like that. Basicly all other games I've tried work. My guess is Settlers 4 would also have issues. I actually never got that one to work back in the day lol. Windows XP/Windows 7 Pro just work really well with Sacred 2 for some reason, probably because XP compatibility is just really good. With Wine everything just falls apart. My Win 7 VM pretty much runs the game, but the virtualized GPU just doesn't play nice. So unfortunately, getting it to work when there's a Wine/Proton compatibility layer between it is just incredibly specific and it just works for some and doesn't for others. People very knowledgeable about Wine could probably troubleshoot it and get it to work, but unfortunately I'm not one of them. Best I can do is guess where the issue is and try to mess around with stuff there. Anyway I'll just play S1 and maybe go as far as hooking up my old machine offline to play Sacred 2, crazy, but I guess that's what it takes >_<
