How to get a bear that can level up and fight at your side

Recommended Posts

I am running around with the bear on my summoning SW. He leveled up once for me and grew from a cub to a big bear, hasn't leveled since. I was dumping pots into him until I realized he may die but continues to come back.

the bear from the cave by Sloeford will grow to full size when you cross into the human territory. And as a side note, once it grows to full size your stuck with it until you finish that campaign. before crossing the great wall you can still take it back for the quest.

And both the bears are immortal, so even if they take damage they will self heal and Health pots are not needed for them.

Cheers!

Does the bear still grow on the console versions? I got the bear cub but after about 20-odd levels of playing, I just gave up because the bear didn't get any bigger.

The bear doesn't "level". when you cross the wall into the human land he grows into a full size bear and becomes more aggressive.

Oh I see. I wish I kept him/her/it then. Oh well...my next char then.

For the baby bear (mama's favorite), who grows up when you hit the path to dragonmaw pass, the quest is called Tutorial Relics... the bear is a great distraction for a ranged fighter such as my dragon mage and bfg seraphim... it does crap for damage so even though you get no xp for his kills, it only manages to kill 1 out of every 5000 or so monsters. There are some creatures which it does not attack, however, and so is useless at drawing them to him for those.

As for Urzi the bear... he does way more damage than mama's favorite... and can probably kill 1 out of every 500 or so monsters I kill (this bear is bigger than mama's favorite... :P Although no xp for kills, this really doesn't matter at all.

I always use both of these bears for my ranged fighters at every difficulty level by not completing their respective quests. Mama's favorite takes damage but heals to full everytime it dies (not comsuming any of your health potions either), whereas Urzi never takes damage. Essentially, both are immortal.

However, some creatures are ignored by these bears, like some undead/demons. Each bear attacks and ignores a different set of monsters, does anyone feel like compiling a list of ignored? :) That would take some time, but hasn't been done yet as far as I know. Also, the bears do not level at anytime... they stay the same throughout the game. Urzi is actually quite strong in act 1, but basically useless later on at damaging anything.

Regardless, they are great at drawing enemy damage away from you and aggroing mobs around them (instead of you) to be blown away.

LOL, this reminds me of the bear from Diablo 2 with that Druid skill.

Sounds to me like this little fella would be fun to aquire if for nothing else than to actually have him by your side.

Funny, I haven't thought about that bear for ages. I kept him once, had him from about level 10 to 50. Damn thing drove me crazy eventually, imagine me sitting on my mount with 4 skeletons, the odd rallied soul from time to time and the bear. Pain in the butt in caves I thought.

I rescued a kitten a couplè of days ago near benny's corn circles. I wonder what happens to him if you dont take him back. Maybe he gets big and uses the spitting hairball CA. Suddenly I wish I had kept him just to see if he gets big and mean but somehow staring at my big scary SW standing beside a kitten for hour after hour might not fit in with his image.

[Just popped back into silver to get the Kitty, unforunately he doesn't carry over into Gold]

Then of course there are the kids you escort from time to time. Now, a Seraphim with a kitten and a few kids in tow sounds doable.

It's actually kinda fun all in all. Until you get into the wastelands. That's when the guards (supposed to be on your side) attack your BuddyBear. I felt so bad for the little trooper that I had to rush thru the area and finish that campaign just to give the little guy some peace.
