Yes, the proportions were not preserved. I guess since everything in the game was made for 4:3 resolution, you would either need to have black bars on the sides in widescreen, or use some 4:3 resolution like 1600x1200. Luckily, my monitor has a nice feature called "4:3 in Wide", which does exactly that. I push a button and the stretched widescreen changes to 4:3 with black bars and it looks as it should look like. I can't capture it on a screenshot, but I could make a photo
And I guess the 2D textures would need some upscaling.

Hello,
there is a way. I'm not the author of the utility, nor the original poster, so I'll mention their names. Anyways, some guy posted this on the Steam forums, so I'll just repost the info here.MisterMan 25 Jun @ 12:31am
Sacred sort of full HD possible
Hi after a lot of googling and configuring I finally found something that worked.
http://dege.freeweb.hu/dgVoodoo2.html
1. Unzip it
2. Copy the .dll files from dgVoodoo2_52\MS into your Sacred folder
3. Run the dgVoodooSetup and set the desired resolution in the direct X tab
It is only sort of full hd because only the 3d models are affected

I'm using a 5 yr old laptop with even older LCD with 1680x1050 native resolution, but this also works for me. Some of my screenshots at 8xAA:

I'm back for more!
So I started fiddling with Sacred once more. And after some testing, I was able to beat the game's stubborn windowed mode and got a nice standard Window going, which can be resized, moved and functions like any other standard Window. Also, I finally can alt-tab out of the game and it doesn't stop working!
So to do this, I actually had to leave the game set into Fullscreen mode (Via config.exe), then I used dgVoodoo2 to force the game into a window, and it actually works.
DgVoodoo has an option to set the resolution to biggest possible window while keeping the aspect ratio 4:3. Due to my screen resolution I made some quick screenshots at 1280x960, but feel free to test it out at your desktop resolutions. Also, the new version comes with an option to force different types of texture filtering, but I have yet to see any difference: https://imgur.com/a/V0aIT
PS: guess the anti-bot defense is still against me
