Downside to relics?

So ive been trying to figure this hole relic deal out I'm just wondering when I equip them I see the ( bar ) inside the defense overview gets split into different colors depending on the resistance type. Does this mean I'm actually losing a portion of my physical defense to gain elemental defenses? Or does it just do that to sort of map out your percentages?

It's just the percentages changing. Definitely no downside
