Based on Librarian's full progression tables, although the texts and tables are from me. Pardon my mistakes.

 

The version you see in the D.A.R.K received technical help from Schot and Gogo. Gogo most of all actually, he literally showed me how to reverse my vB coded version. ;) ;)

 

Edit: I removed the example table and some of my babbling coz I'm over the character limit, lol :oooo:

A. Skills: Basic Information

Every character starts the game with two skills (Plus- defaults; UW - free choice), and after gaining enough experience can acquire six more (8 total). There are 32 skills all in all but some are available to certain classes only.

 

Every time you level up you get more and more points to invest in skills (see table 1).

 

[you can reserve skill points to invest in future, undistributed points will not expire]

 

New skills can be learned at specific levels (see table 2).

[you can postpone new skill selection as long as you wish]

Skill level is capped at 255. Using items with a "+# [skill]" modifier can increase skill level above the current character level. If you equip an item with a "+# [skill]" modifier to some skill, which you haven't learned yourself (+ Dual Wielding on a Wood Elf), that will bring no effect.

 

Note: While a skill capped at 255, extra +skills will continue to provide bonus in UW. No idea if this works in Plus.

 

At maximum level 216 you can have a total of 860 points (820 for Plus).

 

All skills yield diminishing returns. Until about level 50 there's substantial % increase for every skill point you spend; after level 100 you will get 1% increase for every 2-4 skill points only.

 

Skills management is conducted in the inventory/stats screen {I}: the upper right corner shows the table of stats and by default displays you character's attributes (strength, endurance etc.). If you click on the colored bulb in the beginning of the second line, it'll switch to the skills management panel. Hovering the mouse pointer over the stats section with your current health/experience needed for next level will swap the stats screen from attributes to skills or vice versa.

 

In case you have spare points to invest in existing skills there will be a [+] sign next to every skill name and a vivid counter showing the amount of remaining skill points. In case you can learn a new skill there will be a line "New skill" with a [+] sign, click it to bring up a list of available choices.

Not much need to be said here, the tables are very obvious. Note that You can postpone learning new skills, but a Level 50 selection will be not be available unless all previous choices are made.

0) Brief Explanation

 

This section is the main interest of the article. Different skills have different diminishing returns, and these tables will give you a fairly good comparison between the skills if you ever need to choose one against the other. Note that skills with identical progression are grouped together.

 

I will use UW standard for availability (for clarity sake). Plus users can refer to the availability graph above just as ez.

 

There are two tables in each of the subsections. The first one will show the progression of the given skill across different level points. The second one will show the average gain per skill point across different level ranges. In-game description and comment follow the tables.

In-game description: Enhances defensive and attacking capabilities in combat.

 

Comment: This skill is average. Its not useless, but it is not really helpful either. If you have this skill, don't pump your points into this, raise this by items. +Agility items are quite ez to find.

In-game description: Increases the effectiveness of armor and simultaneously decreases the handicap caused by armor.

 

Comment: Excellent skill, all who can take it should. But take constitution first if you can.

In-game description: This skill increases the regeneration rates of combat techniques.

 

Comment: One of the best skills. All but pure casters will take it. For a hybrid that is torn between Concentration and Meditation, pick Concentration. For a detail explanation, see the guide on Regen Formulae.

In-game description: Increases health and the rate of healing.

 

Comment: Simply the best skill, take it. All characters will welcome the extra HP if they aim to go all the way to Niob difficulty and level 216.

In-game description: This capability increases the probability that an opponent will be disarmed when hit.

 

Comment: This skill is crappy. The figures in the tables are misleading, as you will never see 99 out of 100 monsters drop weapons with even 206 points in Disarming. The thing is that this bonus increases the base chance to disarm an opponent, which is really really low (that's why even with no points in Disarming you may see Dark Elves of Zhurag-Nar drop blades and Orc Hunters - crossbows). With the maximum 99% bonus you have at most 20% chance to disarm an opponent. Plus, there's not much use for this skill even if it works, the weapons enemies use are mostly useless. And at higher levels you will learn to kill enemies in one hit, so what's the sense in disarming them? So all in all, pick a better skill than this.

In-game description:

 

Dual Wielding: Enables fighting with two weapons at once and improves attack effectiveness and speed.

 

Unarmed Combat: Improves the attack effectiveness and the attack speed in unarmed combat and with combat gauntlets.

 

Comment:

 

Dual wielding: Dual wield is weird, the damage output is not the addition of the weapons but a weird average of the two. In fact, you can have lower damage than fight with one of the weapon. The only good thing is Dual wield adds more to the attack rating than other weapon skills. Still Dual wielder cannot use a shield, a big sacrifice for lower damage! Its definite a build for challenge. (Try the double prototype swords build if you want)

 

Unarmed Combat: A boxer Glad can do just fine, but a boxer DE/Dwarf is more rare and more difficult to play. Refer to the sticky Boxer guide in SIF for more info.

Comment: A very good skill, and I always think a BM should not go w/o it (unless a build with no shield). Parrying works great with a shield, because shield carries tons of defense. So normally Parrying is better than Agility. Unless you really need the +attack rating or you are going for WIDD build (I.e. welcome damages), parrying is a very solid skill.

Comment: These are character specific regen skills for their class-only Arts (the set on the right of their CA screen {C}). These skills are essentially the Concentration for those class-only Arts, so take them if you use those Arts. Talking about regen, these are better than the other character specific skills they have (Ballistics/Bloodlust/Weapon Tech.), but the later improve the casting time as well. So judge it for yourself, some of these Arts take a long time to cast while some are almost instant. Of course, if you are a trapper DE, you should take both Ballistics and Trap Lore.

Comment: No math to actually plot Trading. Forge Lore is a very unique skill, and I haven't even attempt to plot it out. ;)

 

Trading is an excellent skill, much better items can be found if you keep the skill level close to your own level. Obviously you can do this with items, use your trading skill to get more +trading items. These shop only equipments are commonly referred to as "trading suit".

 

Forge Lore is only useful if you keep it up to the character level, and it is very costly on your limited amount of skill points. +Forge Lore items is rare (I'm not sure if common items can even have this +mod). But then socketing MF is never a bad idea. In MP, many players make a Smith Dwarf whose sole purpose is to forge items, and these players usually won't mind to help fellow players with their forging needs. Just ask kindly. :)
