Timotheus 416
Sil's topic in Key Largo got me thinking, what would be my ultimate desk? So, I downloaded Google SketchUp and I've been playing with it for a while now. Here's my idea of a cool desk Input/comments appreciated, and as always: feel free to post your own creations/ideas. I have an idea, but more fantasy than wishful thinking. Link to comment
Timotheus 416
Well, you give me an easy alternative to it and maybe I'd switch... It's the only 3d modelling program that I know of Link to comment
Flooxim 49
That's a really cool desk! When I searched for a new desk last year, I was looking for something exactly like the one you made, but I had no luck. I remember a discussion some time ago when people were talking about having their towers on the desk instead of on the ground. It looks like this desk would also be the desk of their dreams. It is now, at least for me. Max Link to comment
Timotheus 416
Heh, some measurements: Legs are 5cm wide, 80cm high - I had no clue what I wanted it to be, I just went with 80 ; Cable management space is 8x8x126cm IIRC; Desk is 150x80cm; Room for PC case is 60x25x60cm IIRC; Top shelf is 150x40cm. All wooden panels have a thickness of 2cm. If anyone's interested, I can send them the file. EDIT: I'd love to do something like this in the cable management section: http://www.decluttered.com/ Edited January 6, 2010 by Timotheus Link to comment
Silearth 6
You know, I do well with programs like Excel, Word, Access. I can cross over to the other half of my brain and use Photoshop/Paintshop pro. I just can't seem to make those modeling programs work. I was so lost in google that I finally erased it. I have a spread sheet where I drew out my dream desk, along with some 3d concepts of it; perhaps someone will want to model it for me........ Now, this desk was my original idea, but I changed it and that was when things started to go wrong. My second attempt will actually become the work bench for when I actually build my real desk. Now how do I add a file? ------------------------------------------------- Okay, I just don't know what my problem is. On a whim, I downloaded the latest version of sketchup(after watching a few minutes of a video tutorial) In moments after the install I was creating complex 3D shapes. I'll show my dream desk in a day or two. Edited January 7, 2010 by Silearth Link to comment
stubbie 21
Why have the pc mounted on top of the desk? If, like me, you like your pc to be quiet then have it under the desk. Also you get a lot more usable desk space. I also have my pc mounted on a slab of wood that I fitted wheels to, so its easy to pull out to clean. Link to comment

The problem however, is that when placed on the floor, a pc pulls in a lot more dust than when it's on a desk or fixed underneath a desk. That's my main reason for putting it up there. Underneath the desk would also mean that I'd have to make some structure adjustments, and that's why I chose not to. I have been thinking about creating a cabinet underneath the desk, or buying one. Ikea hacks are interesting options as well: http://ikeahacker.blogspot.com/ Still, placing the case underneath the desk and off the floor is a viable option. Silearth 6
Okay, I've finally achieved some skill in sketchup. Still having problems in some areas. Even managed to find a free renderer plug in. So here, is my desk. Link to comment

Timotheus 416
I'm with locolagarto on this. I'm also interested in your reason(s) for choosing the five-component L-shaped structure. Looks cool, but does it serve any function? Did you have anything special in mind? Link to comment

Looks cool, but does it serve any function? Did you have anything special in mind? It serves almost no function at all. It was all about style. When I was planning it out I wanted something that would be sturdy, but also have a ton of open space for wire routing. The original plan called for three panels and 5 support beams holding the desktop, which was 36 inches as opposed to the 42 inch width of the desk. This design was born out of a problem with sketchup where adding the last panel would complete the faces between the beams. After I looked at it I decided that I liked it better. A few things I should mention: I put glass in for the top mainly because I was excited about the free rendering plugin--the real desk will be using wood. The back panel is actually in the wrong place. I wanted the open end of the desk to go to the right. The entire design could be built with about five 2"x4"x8's and a few 1"x4"x6' Link to comment
Silearth 6
I am not quite ready to let this thread die, mostly because I am having a ton of fun with sketchup and SU Podium. They are a great combination once I took the time to learn how to use them. Here is an updated version of the desk. I made some changes to make production a bit more simple and also add some functionality. You won't notice most of the differences here but I attempted to add my computer to the picture. Another shot Side view....nothing new yet. Our first change. Added a slot for cable management. The solid panel is now hollow for better wire management. A powerstrip will be mounted under the desk with the cable going through the hollow wall and out through here. All things considered, I think I am better off putting the computer on the floor. Beautiful pictures. with your CPU Case on the desk, the desk is starting to look a little small. Link to comment

Timotheus 416
Looks good Sil, but really, try thinking of a solution to keep it a bit more off the ground. A small panel supported by the bottom beam and another support on the other side would be an ideal platform for your pc. For wire management I would prefer either several holes or a slot behind the pc, if you would still put it up on top of your desk. I'd choose to leave the wires as little exposed as possible. That would be: cable to monitor with a separate hole, same for mouse and keyboard, etc. Link to comment
stubbie 21
Looks good Sil, but really, try thinking of a solution to keep it a bit more off the ground. A suggestion. This is what I have and it is very helpful when you have a bad back like me. I cut a thick plank of wood to be just a bit larger than the base of my pc. I added four castors to it (little wheels if you like). This makes it sit about 4" off the ground and its very easy to move out from under my table. Keep it in mind that you will need to move your pc out from time to time if only for cleaning. And if your pc is anything like mine, it weighs a ton. Link to comment
Silearth 6
Perhaps a little stand that matches the style of the left of the desk. I thought of wrapping the five legs under the desk to form a base for the computer but it does have to come out for cleaning from time to time. Link to comment

Timotheus 416
why the octogon shapes? any special prupose/plans? this is cool guys edit: horrid spelling Well a bit due to the aesthetics, I'm thinking about modding my case so I wanna see it. And also, those shapes allow me to acces the most places for cleaning, so I won't have to move it. My modding plans are on low now though, I'm waiting for a couple of LED fans to arrive (the bloke sure is taking his time in sending them) and a bunch of stickers to mod my side panels and a 5,25 bay cover with. Pics of the looks will be up when I'm done Edited January 17, 2010 by Timotheus Link to comment
