Hänsel und Gretel -> Brockengespenst / Brocken spectre
In german mythology witches meet at the Brocken at Walburgis-night. The Brocken is the highest mountain in northern Germany. It is a lonely top with high wind speeds and very cold. We had a search and rescue there when I was at army. Tourists visited the top at storm and got lost.
The Brockengespenst is nowadays known as being the shadow of the watcher on foggy foreground with the sun in the back.

Was Hänschen nicht lernt, lernt Hans nimmermehr.
What little/young Hans isn't learning will Hans never learn. english saying; you can't teach new tricks to old dogs

inchworm -> gymnastics
Gymnastics at school was and is feard in our family. Being tall is very contraproductive to fast rotations. Too much body mass is far away from centre of gravity. But swimming, high jump, javelin or discus throwing,... long arms and legs are very welcome.

chocolade -> caterpillar
Our oldest opened a bar of chocolade with fruit pieces when she was 5. Below the package were caterpillars. 3 years of no chocolade eating. But never in danger of overweight because of that too. The chocolade company excused with 5kilo chocolade. But all was eaten by the cousins of my daughter.

egg -> nest-egg
Once we had to keep our hens in the barn while quarantine because of bird-flu in the district. They were laying their eggs everywhere so we started to use nest-eggs, And no, in German Nestei/nest-egg hasn't the second meaning in money business.
Many uses:
making a location the hens should lay their eggs
or
birth control: exchange some real eggs with nest-eggs to have less chicks
or
stop egg picking: some hens lay eggs into a nest not their own. they have the bad habit to pick into eggs already in the nest to better spread their own genes. They stop aftersome tries with hard nest-eggs.

bear-garlic: the taste of garlic but with way less bad smell from mouth and hide. With the new bio-hype you can find Bärlauch/beargarlic even in european(?) town markets

I think most people are used to the spicing of their youth. In my case local herbs depending on searson.
Currently it is the season for wild bear-garlic. Of cause you can buy potatoe chips with bear-garlic spice:
But with our new indoor garden we can try with fresh bear-garlic all the year:
Marinade bear-garlic leaves with some oil in the marinade. then dry the leaves in the oven. The trick is to make the leaves dry and cross while the aetheric oils go into the thin layer of oil which covers the leaves. Remember some vitamins need oil.
Another way is dusting the leaves and frying them, more tasty but not so healthy,
Bärlauch - beargarlic- Leaves covered with mix of spiced flour, eggs and parmesan. Then fried:

80's -> Neue Deutsche Welle
Begin of the 80ties cheap synthesizers allowed bands to experiment with electronic music. Many german bands were going away from singing english but in german to bring emotions better to listeners. NDW would translate as german new wave and had bands like Trio, Nena, DÖF, Peter Schilling, ..
For me as someone who had never english at school it was a nice change and just in time when I visited a dancing school for school ball.
This was first a NDW song, see second video

platinum -> -80
In Sacred2 multiplayer the levels for platinum difficulty are 100-180.
Taking my old HP-12c calculator 100-180 seems to be -80. But the calculator is 30+ years old. Newer pocket calculators may have other results...

frypan -> wrought iron
My family were wood workers, I studied maths, working with metal at work I did a quick learning at some smiths. I am proud of my selfmade damast chef knife and my wrought iron pan. I hope they hold a lifetime and more.
The smith I learned was one of the few non japanese who was allowed to name his katanas original. He did also close to original viking swords. But the grip of my knife is really really better than his --- tradition of wood workers

wealthy -> Rumpelstiltskin
In the fairietale a daughter of a miller way said to be able to weave hay/stray into gold.
Geld wie Heu haben / to have money like hay is a german saying translating as to have money to burn.
A quote that is often true:
It is often feeled as unfair when people who have only stray in their heads also have money like hay.
„Man empfindet es oft als ungerecht, dass Menschen, die Stroh im Kopf haben, auch noch Geld wie Heu besitzen.“ (Gerhard Uhlenbruck)

palm reader -> dean
Around 130 years ago my old university had a dean who was married. Aftter he left Giessen for Würzburg he told his wife to sit down for an hour while watching her hand. It resulted in the best known photography of a woman hand ever. The dean was Conrad Röntgen. He called his find x-ray. In german speaking countries it is called Röntgenstrahlung. And if a x-ray is done of a body we call the verb 'röntgen'. Modern palm reading I think.
Surgery (Chirurgie) and palm reading (chirology), the words are close together...
And there is a crime story: the ring was stolen when it was hand away for dna-analysis.

recording studio -> MIDI
First met MIDI when my younger brother used MIDI on his Apple II GS. He was member of a school punk band. Tuba's found the way to MIDI only played on synthesizers.
Our third visits an Art and Music highschool and her room in our house is full of electronics. As a single instrument she prefers an Electronic Zither. She has to do a project composing/adapting something into an 8 instrument version using MIDI, luckily the new e-zithers are MIDI compatible.

Kugelblitz -> TV
Kugelblitz translates as ball lightning. When I was 7 a lightning hit the road 200 metres away and a ball lightning was rolling/moving along the road. Nearly every TV and radio destroyed but no bodily harm to anyone. Nowaday the theory is that a lightning hit the wet basalt stone road and a plasma ball was created in the sand layer below the stones.

Mozart -> Mozartkugel
QuoteA Mozartkugel (German: [ˈmoːtsaʁtˌkuːɡl̩] (listen); English: "Mozart ball"; pl. Mozartkugeln) is a small, round sugar confection made of pistachio, marzipan, and nougat that is covered with dark chocolate. It was originally known as Mozart-Bonbon, created in 1890 by Salzburg confectioner Paul Fürst (1856–1941) and named after Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Handmade Original Salzburger Mozartkugeln are manufactured by Fürst's descendants up to today, while similar products have been developed by numerous confectioners, often industrially produced.

polymath -> Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
After some stupidities in his hometown Frankfurt Goethe was sent to an aunt at Wetzlar to be an apprentice at the highest german court. My mom's house is just 120 metres from it.
From Faust to the sorcerers apprentice, colour theory, travel stories, botanics, ... And the Erlkönig, think every child in Germany had to learn the poem. Rammstein made a nice parody turning the ride through a dark forest into flying with a plane at a thuderstorm.

purloined letter -> Polytechnic (applied sciences)
We were moving alot when I was a child. So I had the strange latin, french, politechnic combination at school for the 3 free choosable classes. Somehow I were never at the time at a school when english for starters classes were offered. I learned to speak english when we lived close to an US garnison and I played with american kids. Poe would have been when 16 and after 6 years English (younger sis had to read it). But, heh, polytechnic... water rockets, vulcanoes, repairing car engines, building an own stirling engine.,, so cool.

mini-babybel -> Blauer Brief / blue letter
Aged then 11 our oldest got a blue letter from school to give it to her parents. A blue letter is normally an invitation to visit the school because a child was for example misbehaving badly, terrible marks... . In this case the teacher was told a liar by our daughter. She was a sort of tree-hugger and said that she would eat cheese and drink mild but never something an animal has to die for. Also she was against gene-manipulated food. This was when our oldest told her to be a liar. To make cheese you need rennet. Either from the stomach of calves or gene-manipulated artificial one.
Our handcheese is riped by certain bacteria, hence the low fat, high protein, 0 carbohydrates.

cheeseboard -> Handkäse
The district I was born and live is Handkäse area. Most of the Handkäse in Germany is produced there. Normally not served on a plate because it is usually marinated or in a salade.
Hüttenberg is a neighbour village of Wetzlar.

Terminator -> Dark Star
The mission of the Dark Star is to exterminate unstabile planets. The bombs used have a mind and are voice controlled. Bomb 20 decides to explode and the crew speaks to it to stop it.
Final words from bomb 20:' In the beginning was nothing. And then I said: It become light!'
And then an astronaut stands on a lost door, surfing on it into the sun.
And of cause there was an alien crew member, a painted beach ball
