The Elder Scrolls IV - Oblivion

Recommended Posts

Very few mods are for cheating in the game, most add extra content to the game. New races, more quests, new areas, more dungeons, new graphics, etc.

I have over 70 mods for the game and none of them are to make the game easier, infact most make the game harder, not easier!

Seen some of these, like quest chains in oblivion that you complete to get awesome armor sets/weapons, or (one of the mods I wanted most) in morrowind there was a mod that changed the graphic for Keening (really strong main quest dagger) from a dagger to a longsword. Another cool mod I've seen is one that lets you choose dremora for your race in oblivion character creation.

The Elder Scrolls is a good series. It certainly sucks you in.

I had some issues with munchkinism, though. Take Morrowind, for example. By the time I stopped playing, my Redguard could whip Vivec bare handed...I could run around killing Ordinators on a whim...I could fly, breathe underwater, and my armor would perpetually heal me...ach. :( My gear looked cool, no doubt...but I could run around naked owning everything.

I didn't use any cheats, either. Cheats make games boring beyond the pale.

I played Oblivion for a while, and found the same issues. Like a seven speed manual transmission can't help but climb in power, you cannot help but end up ultra-uber and godlike in power. That might be cool for some, but for me it ended up being rather boring.

It depends on how you build you character. If you build it to fight your way through the game (whether weapons or spells), then yes it can be ultra uber. If however your skills are to make you a great thief or a specialist alchemist for example and attack is almost an afterthought, that gives the game a totally different perspective.

I play the game with the premise that my character is built to live as per his/her profession and that the storyline takes him by surprise and that he has not developed extraneous skills that are not normally part of his lifestyle.

I never develope a hero, fighter or combat mage.

While our beloved forum was down. One night after work, mainly to tired to play EU HC. I found this game while researching Graphics Engines.

The Elder IV Official Homepage found here: OBLIVION

In all honesty, spent minimal time researching this title. But I have to admit, this game did look interesting. The Graphics also look simply amazing!

Anyone in our community try this game? I know it is a well acclaimed title with great reviews & many awards.

I remain, curious

I think Oblivion is better at making the player feel like they have a strong character w/o (intentionally) letting them have god mode like strength (I.e. my morrowing character had elemental resistance daedric armor, perpetual mana/health recovery, and a sword that damaged health and stole health lol), what with the difficulty slider (turn up the difficulty if it feels too easy) and the fact that enemy levels scale with the player (at least to some point). That being said making a madness claymore w/ weakness to all elements on strike and a ton of elemental damage on strike and soul trap on strike is completely OP (read that it could kill the final boss of Shivering Isles xpac in 4 hits, tested and found it works). I've actually been thinking about making a thief character, or maybe trying to play the whole game as a vampire (sun damage = no fun).

Rndm,

You should try the thief character. They have 2 storylines to follow if you add in the assasin's line in addition to the thief guild. The items you get from the assasin's line are truly great for your thief.

I choose the lizard man for this role as he has built in bonuses for the thief character.

The best mods for this game are extremely high quality. Many of the top modders are scooped up by big gaming companies. (well a few)

Unmodded I would prefer morrowind actually for a richer less 'dumbed down' gaming experience. I'm not sure what exactly I mean by dumbed down but I originally played without mods and morrowind was more a cool world where it took guts to explore. And oblivion was grinding level scaled dungeons endlessly. Which is still my criticism but there is a mod called OOO that mostly fixes this.

A lot of other issues but I would give Oblivion (modded) a thumbs up :xmastree:

The key mods for me were OOO, race rebalancing project, nGcD (something like that fixes leveling so its not such a chore to train; more realism), Less Annoying Magic Experience

IMO, this game was a good and solid game...at first. Then I got extremely bored with it. I don't know if it was just not challenging enough as far as leveling up is concerned, or if it just got old doing the same thing over and over. It seems to me like the Elder Scrolls games have a functionality like MMOs, where they're really simple and everyone can play them with their open ended world and repetitiveness, but for me it just didn't work out. I spent a few hours playing it when it first came out, got really bored, then waited a while and went back to it to see if I could play it again...couldn't get over the fact that it's very similar all the way through the game.
