Guild Wars 2 - Server Switching at Release

Recommended Posts

We have time, I just wish our current players and future guild members would lend a voice so we don't get a lot of finger pointing after the decision is made.

Maybe we could have Schot setup a countdown timer on the top of the forum, so maybe it will remind future GW2 that the release is soon and they have to show some activity.

Does anyone see any benefit to waiting on the home server question? :inquire:

Not really actually, it's just that I don't want the finger pointed at us if we tell others to pick a server and it gets full by (or before) release.

Alea iacta est!

I will personally assume any and all responsibility for the server choices.

I have no objections - I just hope the ping to the US servers will be good for me... It kinda suits me well, since I'd be playing mostly in fairly early hours US time! Not that I don't mind having a lot of other players around, I just don't want to end up with in a zerg most of the time.

I just got my pre-order code, so I'm going to see if I can download the game! :cow_white:

Keep in mind that thousands and thousands of Beta invites went out. Not everyone that played in Beta own the game, nor will they purchase it. It is impossible to base anything on what happened population wise on the Beta. That is why its the site that people state what server their guild is going to is "helpful" but also not concrete.

I should have waited for your input, but I do not think we could have come up with a more reliable method of pre-selecting a home server.

My concern is that the server we selected is an almost non-populated one. It's not fun playing on a dead server. There will be times when only one of us is online (mostly me) and we will need other people outside of the guild to play with. I hate to be so negative but I'm not happy about the server choice. I didn't get to give my input because I was busy and when I'm busy I don't have access to a computer. I can only hope that it turns out ok and we don't get stuck in a few months paying to move to a higher population server, because currently I don't have the funds to spend on it.

I feel bad that I'm being cranky about this, but I still am.

As I have said to a few of you before...

  •
  • I suggest going to a mid-range server.
  • Picking a server that will have a low population is bad. (and you risk that server being eliminated)
  • Events will be harder, if not impossible.
  • Those that max level will transfer out to higher population servers when the higher levels population dwindles.
  • Low population servers have few high level players because they migrate to where other high levels are
  • Little to no high level population to participate in end game activities.
  • 0-max level is only the tip of the iceberg in an mmo.
  • The majority of the playable content occurs after you reach max level.

I will go where the rest of FDM goes, but I really think we should re-think this

Kiyeri, I do not disagree with any of your points. But how do we identify the server that has all those qualities (and the IMHO most important one, room for all of FDM)?

Link to comment

Well I would have suggested we stay on Gates of Madness until I saw Wygram's post that Reddit is going there... they tend to fill a server lol. Give me a few minutes to research and ill tell you what what I would choose and why

These are the servers that seem available for us

Borlis Pass

Dragonbrand

Ehmry Bay

Ferguson's Crossing (lowest population but rumored Titan alliance may move here)

Fort Aspenwood

Henge of Denravi

No. Shiverpeaks - Ascension Alliance

Sanctum of Rall

Anvil Rock - unofficial 4-Chan

Black Gate - proposed very high population

Crystal Desert - poss. Reddit

Darkhaven - poss Reddit

Gate of Madness - Reddit

Isle of Janthir - Reddit

Jade Quarry - Role Playing, Reddit

Maguuma - Role Playing

Sea of Sorrows - Oceanic

Sorrow's Furnace - proposed high population

Stormbluff Isle - Role Playing

Tarnished Coast - Role Playing, Reddit

Yak's Bend - Guild Wars 2 Guru and Yogscast

Supposedly Titan Alliance is huge and have yet to declare where they are going, word is they are waiting to see what server is lowest in population then going there (since they alone will fill a server)

Also, I have read a lot that people are posting bogus information.

How is this for a compromise... we go to Ferguson's Crossing and if it is in fact dead we agree to all change while server jumping is still free. If in fact it is free to jump at first.

Kiyeri, I am not trying a wag-the-dog maneuver, but I just saw this offical word about server switching and wanted to post it.

...

At launch, players will be able to transfer between worlds freely. However, once server populations have largely settled and stabilized, world transfers will be restricted to once a week and cost a variable amount of gems based on the population of the world being transferred to.

In time, we’ll also introduce free “guesting,” which will allow players to visit other worlds as guests as long as they have friends on those worlds. This feature will be free, but guest players will not be able to enter World vs. World, and the Power of the Mists bonuses from their home world will continue to apply to their characters.

LOL Lujate... I just posted something to that effect.

The more I researched where the major players are going, the more posts I read that said people were making bogus posts and the major players were contemplating on going other places.

We just want to make sure we take the following into consideration: Major Players are going to over-fill a server by themselves (reddit, 4chan, Gw2 Guru, Yogcast) and I for one don't like RP servers (don't know about the rest of you.

Edit: 9gag is another one we might want to avoid, but since I don't have access to it (refuse to register just for this) I can't check to see where they might be planning on going

Sounds reasonable to me.

Sounds good. We should know by a couple of days after actual launch what the server status is. And we should have a larger active guild base to discuss any proposed move.

I'm easy so what ever choice you guys make is fine with me.

From what I see, there are 45 servers in total, right? And I imagine a minimum of 500K players at launch. That makes it a little over 10K players per server if spread out evenly. let's say there will be about 10 very low populated server with only 10% of world wide players. That makes it about 1000 players per each low pop server and if spread evenly within the 5 races, that's 200 players per starting area from the get-go.... take about half who actually go out into the world, I'm sure you'd end up in a group of about 20 players per renown heart early on? my figures are probably waaaaaay of... But if we take only 10% of this number (2 players around you at all times), then I don't even want to know what high populated server are going to be like!

We were on a Full server during the BWEs and stress tests (Gate of Madness) and there were plenty of people around but not so many that they got in each others way. In fact they were helpful, it was a very friendly group from what I saw.

Again, Sorry I'm being such a pain about this.

You are not a pain, your voice is valuable and needed in our discussions. :bounce:

As Wygram said, your opinion really matters to us Kiyeri. And you sure do have much more experience in MMOs than all of us combined. We're also here to listen, so feel free to say whatever you feel important for us to know.

Yea there were a lot of people on the server, and people were indeed very friendly; expect that guy who called us "noobs" that came from nowhere. (Sorry I had to bring this back, was so funny in fact.)

Heck all of us (including him) were noobs back when he said that to us. That was in BWE1, a real moron. :butcher:

OMG that was so funny =). Were you with us when the NOOB named "Elyos" (the name of the light side peoples in Aion) was participating fight after fight with no armor at all on and he kept dying over and over and was shouting for ppl to heal him LMAO... His armor was all broken and he wasn't repairing it (guess ya had to have been there)

And much thanks guys for your kind words... I guess I'm a bit touchy about being on a dead server cuz night after night there is an empty guild and no one to do stuff with in GW =(... I really don't like playing alone so much (shhh it's cuz im kinda sucky at soloing teehee)

That was the ranger in his boxers during the moa escort, right?

The last I heard, NCSoft (ArenaNet's parent company) stated in July they had sold 1 million copies and were projecting 3 million sold by August. Even if they fall short of that projection, I doubt we are going to be too lonely for a long while.

Closer to home, I see that a 200 player guild declared for Ferguson's Crossing today.

Link to comment

Some of those numbers are bogus... there is someone that posted they have 4 guilds with 3400 in their alliance, the max for a guild in GW1 is 100 with a max of 1000 for an alliance. Sad, these guild sites used to be much more accurate, now people troll them to throw everyone off.
