wolfie2kX 528
Hmmm... Ah.. The memories.. The system I'm running now was sort of similar to what you've got with a few minor differences. I had an Athlon 64 3400+ chip and an Nvidia 7300 GS video board as well. My old video board got fried in a power outage - so I wound up upgrading the card to an Nvidia GT 220 board. It's much newer and came with 1 GB of video memory. So anyhow... It seems you've got fairly recent video drivers (10/16/2010). DirectX seems to be 9.0c - which is the most recent one for XP. Now, I'm seeing one thing that may present a problem. The DXDiag file below has a line that reads: "AGP Status: Enabled". If this means you've got an AGP (Advanced Graphics Port) slot on your motherboard, and should you need a replacement for that video card, it will be quite problematic finding one that uses AGP. All video cards for PCs use PCIe (a more modern technology) these days. You'll have to check your manual for information on that. All may not be entirely lost, however. The section marked "System Devices" lists an PCI to AGP bridge as well as a PCI to PCIe bridge. Some boards came with both technologies. You will need to check your manual for a full description. The rest of the file seems ok. Nothing particularly problematic pops out. One thing I can tell you right now - even if you can get around the video issue, your experience with the game is likely to suck big wind. Mostly because you've only got 1 GB of RAM installed. I found that playing with only 1 GB of RAM was like playing a slide show - especially when I got close to a densly populated area like Sloeford. It wasn't too bad out in the boondocks where there were no more than 1 or 2 baddies to contend with. Let us know what you've got in your system... Link to comment
marcuswob 43
Try -skipopenal (because you use an SB Live). PhysX-effects should be turned off (Nvidia 7xxx are not capable of running PhysX acceleration). 1GB is very few available memory to run this game. CU Marcus Link to comment
Bondbug 32
OK thanks. I am only semi-computer literate, so a few points here. (Wolfie) - I can check out the AGP/PCIe business. As I understand it, I do not need to disable AGP or change anything - you are making a point for the future and thanks. I don't remember ever seeing a manual, but I have a helpful computer shop. - I need more RAM. How much? Not difficult to handle that problem, but it will be a week or two before I can get the parts. Is this what "CheckDeviceFormat/D3USAGE_DEPTHSTENCIL failed" means? Or is the error message, as usual, irrelevant? - and sorry, but what do you mean by "Let us know what you've got in your system... "? Dust, mice, bats, too much food from Xmas/New Year? OK I told you I was thick. (Marcus) - skipopenal !? what on earth ..... but I found a post by Knuckles with precise directions, so no problem. - I thought I was rid of PhysX from last time. Did Sacred 2 re-instal it? I will check it. Thanks for reminding me. Edited January 6, 2011 by Bondbug Link to comment
marcuswob 43
Is this what "CheckDeviceFormat/D3USAGE_DEPTHSTENCIL failed" means? Or is the error message, as usual, irrelevant? This means: The game was not able to set the graphics card into the needed 3d mode. The driver reported that it does not support the DEPTHSTENCIL feature. I thought I was rid of PhysX from last time. Did Sacred 2 re-instal it? I will check it. Thanks for reminding me. Do not uninstall PhysX from your system. The game needs this library. Yes, it was reinstalled with patch 2.40 I think, and it needs to be available. PhysX is not a driver from Nvidia, but a library like .NET or DirectX. It is capable of using CUDA features, but it also can run on your CPU. CU Marcus Edited January 6, 2011 by marcuswob Link to comment
Bondbug 32
Can I do anything about the DEPTHSTENCIL feature? I tried opening again, and this time got as far as a character selection screen, with a button for start game. Then I eventually got a message "unable to connect to network (64). Cannot establish connection to our servers. Please check your internet connection and your firewall settings" As you can see the internet connection is working fine, and I have cleared all firewall settings for game client, game server, update client and Sacred2-UK-INT-2-40-0-0.exe Since then I have got no further than the opening DOS type screen and the error message at the top of the thread has come back. I ended up putting the skipopenal on the end of the target address in the shortcut that I put on the worktop. Not that it is apparently having any effect, but is that correct? Elsewhere it either did nothing or did not seem to make any sense at all. It was very obvious with the character selection screen that extra RAM is needed. Odd however that I have had no problems with other on-line games of later date than Sacred 2. Thanks again for your help. Edited January 6, 2011 by Bondbug Link to comment

I will check it. Thanks for reminding me. OK.. First off... RAM.. You've got Windows XP, which is likely to be the 32 bit variant. Not too many people ever really used the 64 bit version. So you will have a 4 GB limit. You currently have (per the DXDiag file) have 1 GB installed. It likely will depend on what kind of memory your system uses - and how many RAM sockets your motherboard has. They generally come in pairs - 2 or 4 slots. If you've got 1 GB now, it could be you have either 1 x 1 GB card or 2 x 512 MB cards. I'd shoot for 3 total GB if possible. And I would shoot for 2 x 512 MB + 2 x 1 GB cards. And above all, tell the guys at your shop you want the low density variety. At some point during the last decade, some wiseguys came up with High Density RAM - and it doesn't play well with most motherboards unless they were specially configured and built to deal with it. Now then... That error message isn't meaningless - there's likely some tech out there - probably a programmer who knows exactly what it means. But... Judging by the verbage in the message, specifically the bit about "DEPTHSTENCIL" - it sounds like a graphics issue. A quick check of Google confirms my suspicions.. There are over 7000 hits for the error message you posted - and some of them are from Sacred 2 owners... Unfortunately, those posts don't mention any solution to the problem. Fat lot of good.. NOT! Further reading indicates that the D3DUSAGE_DEPTHSTENCIL feature is a command given in programming for DirectX games (like Sacred 2) to initialize the graphical environment. It's a check to see if the video card is capable of generating the proper buffers needed to continue loading the game. Now then... Why you're getting the error - I don't know. There could be some issue with the card. It could be something was disabled somewhere or simply the card's on it's last leg and may be on the verge of going kaput. Might want to have those techs take a look into it for you. Actually, getting further info on the contents of your system isn't going to be all that helpful at the moment - so I don't think it'll be necessary. I think we're onto the root cause of the problem - it's a video card issue. And yes, if you reinstalled Sacred 2 AND you patched the base version up to 2.40 (or beyond), the PhysX components would have been reinstalled as it's part of the massive cumulative patch Ascaron issued. Bondbug 32
Great Wolfie. I have only 2 RAM slots, I.e. 2x512 which I only put in new last year ago, I think because I was having the same problem trying to instal Sacred 2 and someone said I needed more RAM. Should have asked them to be more specific about RAM size. Ah well, bin for them and I will see what is on offer - low density (that shouldn't be too difficult even in French. I will check the prices for more up-to-date graphics cards, and update if possible cash-wise. I have to leave the PC with the shop for a week if I want to get it checked - not their fault, just that I only get into Tours once a week. I will deal with the RAM first, then see if there is any cash left. If not I will try to turn off PhysX effects. Link to comment

I'd probably go with the 2 x 1 GB kit. It's a bit cheaper on the one hand, and your motherboard may NOT like the 2 GB RAM sticks. 2 GB of RAM should be plenty to run Sacred 2 - as long as you're not running multiple apps and stuff in the background. As far as binning the RAM goes - a suggestion, if I may.. Ebay them! Or even better still - see if your tech guys will buy them from you for a reasonable price. Never hurts to offset an expense if you can. It might make the difference in affording the video card. Link to comment
Elwin 2
Personally I think sacred 2 has serious memory usage issues. I have 2gb ram and after few hours game freeze and my rame usuge reachs like 95% at that point.. So not sure if 2gb is enough. Link to comment
Bondbug 32
I will check your suggestions with my Tech, Wolfie. Thanks again. You may well be right Elwin, but I can't really comment. It would be re-assuring to know what causes your RAM problem. There may well be other threads which discuss this aspect of RAM. Link to comment
wolfie2kX 528
Personally I think sacred 2 has serious memory usage issues. I have 2gb ram and after few hours game freeze and my rame usuge reachs like 95% at that point.. So not sure if 2gb is enough. It's been my experience that the game (client and server) hardly suck up more than oh. about 1 GB (maybe a tiny bit more) at any given time. I've got 3 GB of RAM installed so I figure 2 GB should be OK as long as you don't try to run a lot of other apps at the same time. At the moment, I've got Sacred 2 up and running. Sacred2.exe is currently occupying 403,036 KB and the S2gs.exe takes up 60,276 KB - so it's well under 2 GB. Oh.. and I'm also running Windows 7 here - which does use up a wee bit more resources than XP. Not too much more, mind you, but it is more. It's always a good idea not to do Sacred 2 in marathon sessions. It's good to stand up, stretch, refresh that drink, grab a snack, make use of the little general's room, take in some fresh air, etc... Your Sacred 2 characters may not need to eat drink or use the facilities, but you do... I will check your suggestions with my Tech, Wolfie. Thanks again. You may well be right Elwin, but I can't really comment. It would be re-assuring to know what causes your RAM problem. There may well be other threads which discuss this aspect of RAM. You're welcome... Let us know how it turns out. Sacred 2 - for what it's worth - does have memory issues. The more you play, the further you go, the more memory gets taken up. It doesn't always release that memory thinking you might suddenly decide to go back to an area you've already been. So it's generally a good idea to shut down the game every few hours or so and take a break. Edited January 9, 2011 by wolfie2kX Link to comment
Elwin 2
So I was right . I use win7 too, and my memory usage of it isnt high all the time ... it reaches that level after few hours. So sum up. Gamw need breaks no matter how much ram having ;p Link to comment
