Will there be any modding support of toolset for Sacred 3?

Recommended Posts

One of the biggest failings of Sacred 2 was the lack of any mod support or toolsets... The game could have gone much further if the community would have been able to develop user created content after the developers/company abandoned the game... Especially given the fact so many upcomings games of this genre "multiplayer action rpgs" being released over 2011/2012 will have official modding support or a toolset developed for them. Two Worlds 2, Hunted, Torchlight 2, Grim Dawn, Neverwinter Nights Reborn, Dungeons Siege 3... If sacred 3 wants to be able to compete with so many other games on the horizon I think some type of modding support or toolset would help give it an edge. Especially given that Diablo 3 will not have any modding support... Otherwise I really don't see how this game will be able to compete in the long run against so many potentially amazing games... Sacred 2 was ok, but it had no modding support and no community content... This was alright when the developers were releasing large updates and patches... But then they pretty much ditched the game.

Hi Soulmancer, and welcome to the forum. Have you checked out the Sacred 2 Modding Community here? There is also a community patch that members are working on, and in fact there was a call out for quest writers.

Apparently more support was supposed to have been added, but the commununity you see here, though small, has put together some interesting work, and there are some beautiful new visions of the game, work done with the very limited amount of resources offered by Ascaron.

:)

Correct me if im wrong, but wouldnt mob tools also allow ppl to "create" overpowered weapons, armor with altered stats, and plus 999 to all stat rings like we saw in Sacred 1, and specially on the open servers?

Just be annoying, cause it will only be a matter of time before someone manages to get it to a closed server, and then hell is loose.

If im wrong, and I hope so, it will be a nice addition to the game.

Of course it would, just like having the save files on your PC means it's possible to edit them & cheat, that's a)not a good reason for not supporting SP/Open & b)doesn't mean that many people will actually do it.

Doing that on Closed is quite a bit different, since the core/important files (Balance.txt, Spells.txt, Blueprint.txt, etc) used are on the server & you can't access them. Also, if you've modified your files you can't log in to Closed (IIRC).

Yeah, server says no when you try to enter or something.

Llama has it right though, people who want to play online with others just go with closed, people can't edit savegames or any of the other files making it free of hacked items like that.

:) D2 was anything but open source and had all kindsa stuff like that.

Not releasing modding tools cause someone may abuse them is like outlawing cars because people sometimes drive them too fast.

The big problem with releasing an editor for Sacred 2 was licensing. Alot of the things ascaron was using were expensive, licensed software and so creating an editor for the public wasn't possible. Hopefully it won;t be the case this time around so that theres a better possibility of there being an editor at some point.

Yeah, they'd hafta have a front end that was in house to make that happen really, you're right about that.

Yet if the peops that are running the software market it right, they'd create revenue by introducing their software through a Sacred 3 medium, and if it takes hold (which I anticipate it will) it'll be similar to when some of the other engines in the past virtually recreated gaming years back.

Duke Nukem style

Yup, it's one thing to license middleware for in-house use, another to license it for release to the public (and I'd imagine that would be significantly more).
