Sirius 16
I read a guide online about a harmless way of keeping your CPU cooler during gaming. Only hazard for your PC would be blue screen, if you lowered too much power. I wanted to try this, of course, as my laptop CPU gets hot enough to boil an egg on everytime I play a half-new game. My CPU will overheat, the fan starts spinning like crazy, and my game will lag terribly. The guide gave me several programs that I would need to do this. They were: RMclock v. 2.35 ORTHOS CPU loader HWmonitor HWmonitor simply monitors how hot the CPU and GPU gets during gameplay and such. Orthos CPU loader stresses the CPU so that you can tell how hot it goes when it's at it's max. Here's how hot mine got: Now, something tells me that I really need this undervolting done. What happens is that whenever I play one of these two games: "Sacred 2" and "Battlefield: Heroes", my CPU will overheat, killing the FPS drastically. This will problably happen to many other games also. I would really like to eliminate this issue if possible, with these programs. It all seemed rather simple with the step-by-step guide, except for one thing. The RMclock v. 2.35 that I downloaded from the link given by the guide, was NOT the same as the screenshots on the same guide. This left me in a rather confused and helpless state, since that's the program used to do the undervolting itself. Can anyone help me with this? Link to comment
Timotheus 416
Well, regarding those programs, desktop vs laptop can has it's quirks. First off though, what's wrong with the laptop? - Has it always been overheating? - How old is it? Because if it is about a year old, and hasn't overheated in the beginning, it could be that the cooling system got clogged. Buying a can of pressurized air and cleaning the in- and outtakes could help. Also, try to unscrew the compartments at the bottom (if they're not sealed), and clean out any dust. You could also let a tech shop handle this. Second, you do know laptops can handle a lot of heat? The specifications are not comparable to desktop processors. Third: are you sure it is your CPU? And fourth, including a link to the guide and screenshots of the screens you get would be very helpful Link to comment
locolagarto 15
I downloaded the CPU load program, I already have the hwmonitor and my 15 month old Del Inspiron laptop barely could peak 60 C. So I am starting to wonder if your just having an unusual cooling problem. Link to comment
Sirius 16
Thanks for the fast replies. Alright, here's a link. My laptop is a ca 1 year old. It has been overheating ever since I tried Battlefield: Heroes. That and Sacred 2. No other game so far has been overheating so much that the fan goes into max speed, and the game lags for 15-20 seconds. The sudden drop of fps comes along each 5 minutes or so. Here's my dxdiag. Timotheus 416
Well, how long have you been playing Heroes? With the question I've asked, I meant: has your laptop been prone to overheating from the get-go, since the moment you've bought it? Because then it could be a technical (=hardware) issue... Your DxDiag is not really of use here, but at least it contains the model number of the laptop (and the brand). I'll do a search on overheating issues. Apparently the CPU temperatures are normally quite high in your model. Here are 2 tips: 1. Buy and/or use a can of compressed air (suited for pc cleaning, most pc stores sell similar products) to clean all the in- and outtakes of the laptop, according to the instructions on the can (don't spray for more than 5 secs, use can upright, etc). Then check whether you can unscrew any plates at the bottom where you can clean some more. 2. Put a book under the edge of your laptop (at the side of the screen). This lifts the laptop slightly, and will enable cooling. If this decreases your temperatures a lot, you might want to consider buying a laptop stand. We cannot assist you without knowing what you are looking at. You mean screenshots of the RM clock program? I've been playing BF: Heroes for about six months, I guess. The strange thing is: When I go into my laptop power options and set CPU-efficiency to 99%, it never overheats. Though I get a fps drop of 15-20 in Heroes. If I put it back up to 100%, fps are high, until the CPU overheats and lags my game. Link to comment
locolagarto 15
If your laptop has anything similar to speedstep undervolting will most likley reduce the performance in exchange for stability. As you seen with changing your power performance to 99%. I think you better option is to look at improving the coolong performance .. as Timothy noted. Disabiling the thermal throttling in the BIOS is another. However I don't recommend it. That is a safety measure to prevent overheat and damage. Link to comment
Sirius 16
Alright, I just took out the bottom lid and cleared the CPU-area and fan for dust. Not very dusty though, but there was some amount of ultra-fine dust that appeared as smoke when blown out. I also put an empty DVD case under the back of my laptop, lifting it up to provide a constant supply of fresh air under the computer. Let's all cross finger's now, shall we? Edit: How can I tell if my laptop has speedstep? Edited July 21, 2010 by Sirius Link to comment

Edit: How can I tell if my laptop has speedstep? Speedstep is an Intel technology that automatically adjusts the CPU performance. if you have an AMD you wont have it, however AMD may have something similar. I am just not as familiar with them. CPUID.com has a cool tool that shows the performance of your system called CPU-Z. you can use it to see voltage, multiplyer, bus speed etc, even memory and video speeds. Link to comment
zadienorris 0
I am undervolting using a program called CPUgenie. It takes almost 24 hours but it does an intense stress test on each voltage setting and does it all automatically. I will know tomorrow morning if it is even worth it. How much extra battery life did you get from doing this to your laptop? You might also want to look into 3D Mark Vantage. That program can stress test your CPU in 15-30 minutes to check if it's stable. Link to comment
Timotheus 416
3Dmark really isn't that CPU-heavy. I would recommend single or more instances of Orthos. Link to comment
Rotluchs 82
I would recommend single or more instances of Orthos. are there even newer releases of Orthos? I thought this modified version was rather outdated now, so I always used the latest version of it's original - Prime95 (also has 64bit and multicore support, orthos has as well maybe.. but I'll stick with P95) CPUGenie might get the job done, but it's only a 30day trial after that u have to buy it. RMClock is rather 'old' by now too , latest version is from 2008.. ok so might be your AMD Turion X2, but there's a chance it's not supported by it.. you could give this a try, but also don't know if it would work with your model: http://www.trilobyte-se.de/x86iandc/ have you checked your notebook's bios settings already? I know they're often quite limited but perhaps it's still possible to undervolt your CPU there, directly.. for Software Undervolting, you could just google for overclocking tools aswell, if they're capable of overvolting.. many of them you could use to undervolt too then, I guess. there're even video tutorials on youtube.. Timotheus 416
Well IIRC there is a new tool called Intel Burn In tool or smt as well, but it's like Furmark: it will stress the bejesus out of your equipment and waaay above regular use... Edited July 31, 2010 by Timotheus Link to comment
