Question on Hirelings quest

Yep. The tutorial part just shows you how hirelings work. You can let him die and still get others later.

I always choose the soldier to wield the bow...keeps him further out of danger. If you're in Campaign mode then this quest won't be available until next difficulty. If in Free-Play or LAN then it's available each time you start/enter a game.
