Delta! 987
Anise -> Rusks A very traditional and almost staple of South Africans and especially Afrikaans people are rusks or "Beskuit" as we say in Afrikaans. Basically a sweet quick bread, made with baking powder and bicarbonate of soda, is cut up into finger shapes, and then dried in an oven on low heat (grandmother still do it overnight, with the oven door slightly ajar to let the moisture out). It lasts very long and is dipped in coffee or tea, before being gulped down. A favourite flavouring is aniseed. Link to comment

The way they're made... is it kinda like biscotti from Italy? Rusks -> Biscotti gogo Affluent -> Well Off yes they are similar to biscotti, and the afrikaans word is a direct translation from the english word "Biscuit" which came from Biscotti. Biscotti -> Biscuit -> Beskuit.(it is pronounced very similar, but almost with a different accent). It is a bit coarser, and biscotti usually has nuts (mostly almonds) where Beskuit could have bran, seeds, and any variety of things that adds flavour and texture. Biscotti is also sliced in thin slices and dried, Beskuit is cut into finger or log shapes. they are EXCELLENT with coffee and tea in the morning. Sorry I posted twice... couldn't figure out how to add a quote to a post that was already made.
