  1. There was a bomb explosion today, possible reason : Heat. 3 Weeks without rain and 28+ Celcius. Out of nowhere an old WW2 bomb below a field in Giessen exploded. Noone hurt it seems. The crater is 13m. It is the 7th bomb in a 30 mile circle which exploded without anybody forcing it in the last 5 years. Seems the fuses rot with time (70 years) and start to explode from allone. Most not exploded bombs are found on target pictures and then searched. But sometimes bombers got damaged and dropped the bombs in emergency.
  2. Newest math toy for photography is the free math software octave with its image package. A picture is just a very big matrix at all which you multiply, add, substract divide ,.... This was the result our 14 year old got when I explained how mathematically sharpening would work. I am still the opinion that maths are a lot more fun if you see the results in real life. The Leiterwagen (ladder wagon) was used for a long time in our area. Mainly cows used for pulling it, so ladders were used as side wands to save weight. Ladders when to transport hay, stray Canvas in between the ladders for corn Ladders removed to transport wooden poles and trunks, secured with chains Found the Leiterwagen when visiting my mother this sunday morning. Have to ask the owner if we can get it for our historical village museum.
  3. http://darkmatters.org/forums/index.php?/topic/14998-kinda-stuck-with-sacred-2/?hl=trautmann&do=findComment&comment=6887324 We talked about him in the above thread. He was the hero of my daughter who played goalie too. Trautmann got the highest civil medals in both: UK and germany. He was POW in england and hated when he first played in the english league. 639 games later, aged 41 now, the same honored him by removing the goals in was in. No other goalie was considered good enough to stand between them . Hall of fame in UK and in germany, honored by the queen for improving the english/german relations better than thousands of diplomats could have done. Most known to win the cup final even his neck was broken 15 minutes before end. It was at a time replacement plyers weren't allowed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bert_Trautmann Farewell...
  4. Boring car: The car is tornado-red. With some black plastic film and a set of other frontlights you can make it look a lot better for just 200-300 euro. One problem is her size. A golf will automaically turn from a 4 seater to a 2+2 seater with the front seats as much back as possible. The normal Caddy is mainly bought by young families, not old people. She drove an Unimog on farm roads since she was 12, she drove a light weight car last year, limited to 60km/h. So not much fear that shecan't drive. if the Tramper is claimed as a camper with a speed limit: a lot of the high insurance costs for starter drivers can be saved. She will be 10 of the next 12 month in france, so the speed limit isn't that painful. A new car would have been for my wife, freeing her current car for the daughter. A new car would have made sense because she is a countryside doc and would drive it for several years. But with the extras she wants, the waiting time is about 8 month.
  5. It is like: for healthy persons the radius of 95% of the population is below 15mm- a 5% chance for a false posotive With aids the radius would be 5mm because of weakened immun system With diabetis it is 10mm Contact with tbc people, or been in a country with tb changes tne probabilty graph and therefor the radius for the 5% false positives. 2 in hundred here have cow tb from drinking milk. Mainly peope born before 1965 when the last case of cow tb was in germany. I temember the signs nailed to stalls when is was a kid: cows free of tbc and Brucellosis.
  6. .75 inches that is more than the 15mm allowed for people with no known risc factors, could still be a false positve, but with a very low positive Below 5mm it is considered a negative test. Between 5 and 15mm it has to be interpreted from the data of your interview and is Maths and probability depending on your risc factors. If I would do the to the test now and get 7mm all is okay. If my wife would have 7mm it would be considered a positive test because she is in a risc group as a doctor. The positive test is just that better (more expensive) tests have to be run to exclude tbc.
  7. The main problem is that she will be one year at france. So borrowing a car could be for longer than just a trip to next town
  8. Her birthday was at wriiten tests at university. So we did the celebration when she visited after the last test. She showed us what she learned and did her own hessian chain saw massacre http://darkmatters.org/forums/index.php?/topic/20624-hessian-chain-saw-massacre/ Just she drilled a hole instead using the chainsaw:
  9. Mywife is with the kids at her parents today, but what you describe sounds like a Mendel-Mantoux test. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mantoux_test Normally the test is followed by an intervie about trips to foreign countries, already doing a tbc test earlier in your life, possible reasons for a bad immune system, possible contact to coughing foreigners, known infections in the family, age, weight,...then a formula is used which radius of the test has to be considered as a possible infection. My wife trained the test with me when she did her exam. Most positive results at her patients are old people who got the infection in the war years, the bacteria slept, and now with age their immun system is weaker and tpc pops up again. For a healthy person, doing the first test, no known contacts to ill people: I had a small red swelling of 3millimetres which was considered okay.
  10. Hmm, luckily my daughter is a girl. There is the rumour that boys are fixated for lifetime to the type of cars which is close to their first or the first they wanted. Maybe something true about it: I bought back my first car after 20 years. It still existed but needed a lot of work. The car was born in a time of no-electronics and when germany was still recovering from the war: small, robust, light. It had just the stuff in it which was absolutly necessary: engine, brakes, seat, stearing wheel, ... The car could outrun a Ferrari, Lamborghini, Corvette, Thunderbird, Dodge Charger, .... Well I could do it at least on the road I was doing every day from home to the girlfriend I had at that time. A small and windy road following a line around the small mountains. It had no straits where a sportcar could use its speed. My car had 1400pounds weight, 110hp, engine in the rear, the engine cover was often lifted a bit for better cooling and work as a rear spoiler, ... Our daughter did savety training in my multicolour NSU Prinz on a race track for a weekend last summer. 1 Month later she was winning a slalom race for amateur 17 year olds. Because the car I said, natural born driver she said. Her grandgrandfather (from her mothers side) was state champion in bike races and her uncle does rallye sport and her mother was the monkey in the sidecar at sidecar races. She could use the car if she wants, but it is not practical: only a small cargo room in the front, rear seats removed and a savety race cage in the cabin. The last person owning it did historical hill climb races with the car. I don't know how used you are to car slalom races in america, seems the quarter mile is more popular there. Auto-slalom is a lot of fun and quite save because of relative low speed. Even the first NSU Prinz were build in the fifties, there are not much cars which could beat them in a car slalom, specially in a short radius slalom. Will buy the Tramper in evening.
  11. No, you can even sit in a wheelchair. But insurance wants that chief is informed about handicaps or illnesses. The chief is responsible to prevent people with asthma using breathing systems at chemical burns and such. Why should a girl in a wheelchair be disallowed, if she is better than anyone else to do telephon and radio duty? A 70 year old is psychical better fitted in collecting bodyparts than a 18 year old, ... Physical fitness: Normally we do some tournaments with other departments and the will to win is enough to train for it Paid firefighters you must be able to jump from stand with 5 jumps covering 12 metres (I can still do 13.50m, just a question of keeping the speed) , swimming patch in silver (I have gold in repetition, thanks under water rugby), ...
  12. The old Volkswagen T4 Van started with 55hp, 70 hp, 90 hp, 110hp, 150hp. The least fuel consumption was at 90hp. Less hp and you had to do too much throttle, more horsepower and the engine was too big. Yeti, imaginating that you get the Tramper for 7000 and still have 16000 left for a new car for my wife. So our daughter could use the Tramper while the practical year at france and the Lupo my wife has now for city traffic and autobahn transfer to home when she does the theory part of the studies. The Tramper has 88000km. The next main full check with replacing main parts is at 140000. The exspected price for the car would be 9500 if using the used car catalog, which doesn't include the extras: heatable mirrors, fog lights, rear drive camera, seat heating,... We discussed the options with our daughter, I am no dictator But she also knows that a good shape 4x4 Minivan is rare and you have to buy quickly, means till end of week. If she wouldn't do forest economy and arboristic, something like a Lupo or Polo would be best. But she could claim the Tramper as a camper with a speed limit of 100 while the year in france. So the insurance costs would be significantly lower than for a beginner driver and a street car. Topgear 150 mph. I got a BMW GT from my company to save time compared to flying (working with explosives is a lot of paperwork at checkin to bypass controls). What I liked most is the head-up display which can show a virtual full stop line. At 200km/h this line is already quite a bit away, and the car has inside cooled ceramic brake discs. Now with a feeling for the braking distances I do only speed permanently in the headup. What I dislike at Top Gear are there strange tests. A Bugatti vs Porsche but totally ignoring where the Porsche shines: less wide, less weight, so overtaking on a small countryroad is a lot easier. I would never buy a car for a better top speed. Accelerating from 60km/h to 100km/h is more important for me. It allows to overtake a tractor or slow truck in the range of view at a curvy country road. Most accidents at our place are because people are from outside and not used to the roads. They do an overtaking when there is just not enough line of sight to see opposite traffic yet far away.
  13. Yeti 4x4 starts at 23350 Duster 4x4 at 15500 Both have the problem that they arebought mainly by young families who won't sell it after just 2-3 years. So second hand I found none. Buying new there is some waiting and the above prices. Citroen Berlingo 4x4 is at a dealer, new for 18000. But it is a 2 seater cargo variant with no windows at the sides in the rear. What is never in the advertisments: the low fuel consumption of the basis versions is for a near empty car. With a loaded car the basis engine often is too small, you need more throttle , so more fuel.
  14. Melee elves when fighting melee reflectors. Melee reflection is most often a buff - example(hedgehog-like turtles. Removing thebuff is lessdanger to dying on own attack. Melee elves were my first characters and the reason gogo asked me to join this forum Edit: reflected damage by monsters was down-tuned in I&B I think, less instant deaths. My elf did 134000 damage at 31000jitpoints.
  15. Forest economy includes field studies. So a four wheel drive is not bad, and the bed and tent for a rest. Spending a year in france I exspect her to do some sideseeing and rest at camping places. High ceiling: she is 195cm Seats in japanese cars are most often too short for her long legs The car is based on the VW Caddy with replacement parts quite cheap here Most often the rear seats will be removed I think, transporting stuff needed for university: motor saws, savety cloths,... Disadvantages are higher fuel consuming at autobahn. Other second hand cars in 50 miles circle: soft top Suzuki SJ is not a good idea in winter and for cargo theft insurance. Subaru Forexter: short seats, tried it. Mercedes G is too expensive in fuel and repairs for a student, The car of my wife is a VW Lupo 3l, which is not ideal for transports in forests, but very very low on fuel. New car for daughter, actually even a Dacia Duster would be more expensive than the Tramper.
  16. So they have more or less the same rule book: turn off power, secure the perimeter and call for experts. With a platform it is called Hubrettungsbühne here. Telescoping rescue platform would be the translation, main focus is rescue, fire fighting only secondary. Our district capital has one with 43 metres and 800 pounds cargo. Was bought for the hospital which was build in the seventies when building into the height was modern. Modern ones have no more than 4 stocks, our old hospital had 9. Think the record for such a rescue platform is around 100 metres. Our department has just a ladder for 3 stocks, but more isn't needed. We have more water tankers than normal and a 4-wheel command/scout vehicle with water impulse guns for forest fires = my special toy.
  17. Our daughter is 18 now and did the full driving license here in germany. She is studying arboristic and forest economy and was accepted for an Erasmus-project in France. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erasmus_Programme So we discussed what car she will get. A new one, the old from my wife, a second hand one, ... I met an old couple at my zucchini project (other thread, I brought some garden vegs to a nearby home for seniors). I saw a car with a sign 'For sell' at the home and was brought to them when I asked for the owner. They did 4 all europe journeys the last 2 years. But now he lost a foot because of diabetis. They said they have no kids and they just want the new owner to have as much fun with the car as they had and some postcards from the journeys. The price was at 7000 euro for a 2litre engine 4-wheel version in top condition and a lot of extras, 31000euro when new with all the extras. It is a Volkswagen Caddy Maxi Tramper 4Motion 2.0TDI. The name is actually bigger than the car I think. you can turn the backseats into a bed, attach a tent to the backdoor, ... Which I had one when I was young.
  18. The zucchini are ripe. 63 fruits with a length of 2 to 3 feet and many many smaller ones. All relatives got some, home for old people, all co-workers, all friends, .... But still enough left to try out dozens of recipes. Yesterday it was zucchini soup. 3 pound zuccinini half a pound potato 2 onions pepper all boiled in 2 litres bouillon then add 200g hand cheese added (barbaric cuisines like french would use creme fraiche , yieeek) 2 hands of parsley Use a hand mixer to puree all Nice summer soup Today it will be halved zucchini filled with minced meat and mushrooms. Tomorrow noodles with a sauce using up the leftovers from todays filling. How many days can you eat zucchini before you would kill everyone mentioning the word zucchini?
  19. Firefighters are smart. aren't they? We did a rulebook for our local volunteer firefighters, remember it is a small village. Solar modules, wind energy, antenna...: If we didn't get an introduction or the blueprints from the owner, as long as their is no life in danger: controlled burn down. Solar modules may still produce energy even if power is switched off. Often they block access to a fire in the roof. If we have blue prints, depending on type, using black paint spray to turn them off. We have all blueprints of the neighbour villages. We used black paint 3 times and explosives to open an access to a roof 1 time. Antenna: as you mentioned, backup energy is a problem, so without blueprint, controlled burn down. With blue print, turn off energy, control the fire, wait for experts. Had this once, but only around 250 feet antenna mid in a forest on a hill. It was dry so preventing a forest fire had higher priority than saving the antenna. Wind energy: With blueprints we would try to do a manual neutral setting for the rotors, controlled burn down. Never happened. The problem is normally summer breaks. Because of vacances the radius to be covered by a volunteer fire department is higher than normal and so it is more probably that you meet buildings you had no training with.
  20. I knew some people with cats which lost teeth at this age. Normally they just fell out after a day or two. If it is eating fine and shows no pain, perhaps just watch for signs of infections and if no sign wait a day before calling a vet for nature to do her work with removing the tooth. Visiting a vet can be stress for the cat too and costly if it is loosing a tooth after the other because of age. Just watch for infections in morning and evening till the tooth is gone. My sister in law (just on visit this weekend) said her old cat was biting cat-grass more than normal when it lost teeth, just if she tried to remove the teeth herself. Cat grass is not liked by every cat. The norwegian forest cat of my wife likes it, my Chartreux-Blender (Chartreux = french short hair cat, Blender is german for a mix with an european wildcat) never touched it. I think young oath is used in america and our cat grass more in europe. Cyperus zumula is a softer gras than oath, long-fur cats eat more of it than oath. So if changing from oath to cyperus zumula: exspect the cat to vomit more but smaller fur balls. And first days till it is used to it: even sudden vomiting. I think cyperus zumula also looks nicer in an appartment as a plant. Edit: If the cat would be younger I would try a vet to exclude cat diabetis.
  21. A reason for full beans and grinding yourself: mushrooms. Only 0.2% of the coffee powder actually are in the cup of coffee. The rest is what? Waste or better: a ground for eatible mushrooms. Oyster mushrooms are happily growing not only on stray but also on coffee leftovers. The leftovers are boiled and so free of not wanted bacteria and other small things. We normally used stray, then we did a stray/coffee and 12 weeks ago we did just coffee. The stray mix is easier for us - since we have lot of stray. One of our ground cellars which was build in a time of no fridges, is used for some mushroom tests. Oyster mushrooms are rich on vitamin B12, which is short for a vegan. Also Oyter mushrooms lower cholesterin. Whoever thought that coffee is bad for health.... you are just using the 0,2% and not the 99.8% Posted it because I finally found an english article. You know I am lazy with translations. http://www.growveg.com/growblogpost.aspx?id=261
  22. 23. Our kids like 'Falscher Hase' = (faked hare) most. There are boiled eggs in the meatloaf. Created in the war years when there was limited access to beef. The family of my wife does it different to my family. We used to do a fat-netting, while my wife was used to a puff pastry. Of cause no chili and such, onions, leek, cucumbers, just what is local at the garden. The twins are still too young for the extra sharp chilies. Hers ,leek and cucumber direct on the pastry not in the meat mix. Mine, all mixed. Net holds it together till the mix is stiff enough then the net is fully melted. Votes are splitted: wife and twins like puff pastry variant better.
  24. It is somehow strange how close celebrations and tragedies are. My oldest sister did the annuary of her second birthday.... 7th July 1987 a truck transporting fuel had malfunction in brakes. It crashed into the inner city of the nearby town of Herborn and exploded. 3 friends of my sister died in an ice cafe at the center of the explosion. My sister left just minutes earlier for training with her handball team. I was at youth firefighters then and we weren't allowed to help directly but to direct traffic and incoming help. I heard 3 people dead in canada at radio, but I fear all the still missed are dead. At Herborn it were 36000 litres of gasoline and 6000 litres of diesel. The gasoline was flowing into the sewers and there were explosions and fire bursts up to half a mile away, even the river was burning. Canada was heavy oil but a whole train... The thoughts of our family are with the families of the victims ...
  25. Put the video on download page. But don't exspect me to be a Spielberg with the movie. My first try on my outdated machine and frame rate was way to low to aim carefully. http://darkmatters.org/forums/index.php?/files/file/326-max-ca-range-dragonmagewmv/
