gogoblender 3,071
Hey guys Was just curious about the map size. I'd heard that it was like 22 square miles or something... and when the game came out Ascaron had created he largest game world ... later taken out by that car game..filled with nothing I think Is Ancaria as big as World of Warcraft? gogo Link to comment
Rusto 0
I think Warcraft is bigger, but then the content is so different its difficult to compare. Edited May 19, 2010 by Rusto Link to comment
colif 36
Its a tough comparison, there is a lot more space in wow since Burning Crusade added an entire new world to play in, and Cataclysm will probably add more. Sacred 2 got 2 new regions in Ice and Blood but that hardly competes. The one thing you can say is most regions in Sacred 2 get used, there are a few in wow that may not be very crowded at the moment (Last time I started a character, the beginning world was a ghost town since every one above level 60 were in the new areas, it was impossible to get any one interested in running many instances before level 50), Desolace might be still living up to its name (though I see it is being redone in next expansion). You can't, as such, run across all of wow as even the basic game is on 2 continents. Car game? You mean GTA4 or JC2? JC2 is a big map but it all gets boring since you can only destroy so many military bases that have the same floor plan. The main quest is too short and can almost be overlooked, Sacred 2 isn't like that at all (length wise anyway, the quest itself is not memorable (I have done campaign tons of times and still don't understand it)). gogoblender 3,071
Nice info there Colif, thanks. lol... so... the answer isn't easy... how come I expected this btw, I think the game is called borderlands? Huge game, but lots of empty spaces... so could be a quality vs quatity thing. gogo Link to comment
Rusto 0
Woah, Borderlands is awesome! Cant knock that game lol Link to comment
colif 36
Hmm, though I don't have the last dlc released for Borderlands, I think Sacred 2 is probably bigger as travel in Borderlands is mostly by the cars in that game, so time taken going from one place to the next is shorter, and much of the travel time is spent just driving to a new quest, grinding mobs won't assist you as much as they all have set levels, they don't level up as you do, so you can easily out level most of the things in game. I never ended the game, like most games I spend more time restarting than finishing. They aren't the same type of game so it is a hard call. The world map in Red Dead Redemption is probably bigger than it. (not that I will buy RDR, I am not a cowboy), and some online mmo's cover multiple universes. Comparing Sacred 2 to an ongoing MMO is just unfair. Sacred 2 development stopped a year ago (excluding Ice and Blood & the CM patch) whereas WOW is still growing because of the profit it makes daily. If Sacred 2 had 14 million or more players still paying Ascaron to play game, things would be different. Link to comment
tapir 0
A relative size comparison of game world maps Unfortunately Sacred 2 is not in the comparison. Link to comment
gogoblender 3,071
Tapir that is awesome! holee molee, what a great piece of work... Someone has to find a way of reconciling Sacred 2 into the comparison... where is Schot... surely he can do such a thing! gogo Link to comment
Dobster 39
That comparrison is awesome, had no idea how huge some of the game worlds are Hate to say it but Sacred 2 doesn't feel that big to me, S1 felt bigger and I'm not sure why Link to comment
Shattered Rift 2
Someone has to find a way of reconciling Sacred 2 into the comparison... where is Schot... surely he can do such a thing! That's pretty easily done: it looks like each map shows its actual (square mile) size in that link. Sacred 2 is 22 square miles? (I wonder how exactly that's calculated.) It's bigger than Oblivion and smaller than Far Cry 2. ... so many racing games. I wouldn't be inclined to count those, personally. And with everyone complaining about the barrenness of Just Cause 2... It's pretty easy to make a claim that Sacred 2 is one of the most dense games. If nothing else, its "barren" locations are beautiful. Link to comment

It is a great game to look at, it would make a great screen saver. Just watching the sun come up over any beach is enough to make you want to live there, but only after military is defeated. Its a fun game to play with a friend, as then you just take out a town each, and with 369 towns in game, that can take a while. Just cruising the freeways aimlessly can last several hours. I was thinking of that comparison map when I posted before, I just couldn't think of where I had seen it last. Link to comment
Scrappy McSlap 6
I'm loving Daggerfall in that last comparison, on the bottom right... still completely decimates every other game ever made in terms of game world size, 15 years later. That game was absolutely nuts... twice the size of Great Britain. Awesome. Of course, the graphics are so god awful by todays standards, I can hardly stand to play it... still way ahead of it's time though in scope and depth. A masterpiece (and a primary example of why QA testing is so important! Soooo many bugs on release!) Actually, all of the Elder Scrolls games are ridiculous like that (minus the bugs). I was just looking into the stats on Daggerfall... and they're crazy. 62,394 square miles with over 15,000 towns and over 750,000 non-player characters. Granted, 90%+ of that is probably randomly generated... but hey, for a DOS game, that's awesome. Edited May 20, 2010 by Scrappy McSlap Link to comment
gogoblender 3,071
Here's another Sunday bump of affection to all those cool threads that came out when this game was released and we were excited about all it's new features. With the work that Schot put into the map, of course, size comparisons were made with no real conclusion? That comparison map is indeed a work of art, and I hope this crowd of new players can be proud of the content, depth and size of what they are playing. Are big worlds cool? U bet they are gogo Link to comment
Dobri 55
Sacred 2 has one of the biggest worlds I have ever seen in a MMORPG or hack'n'slash game. This is one of its numerous qualities that make the game worth playing over and over trying out and focusing on a lots of different stuff. It's great, really... I'm close to 3 years in the sacred world, and I still haven't seen all of it Link to comment
VarencaTible 1
I think sacred 1 had a larger map and the expansion added th eunderwold to it that was half the size of the base games map, So yes sacred 2 has a larger map then world of war craft as world of war craft is contrifed out of several loose maps. in an over arching game world, where sacred 2 placed the expansions ......expansion ( god I hate me for saying that) on the same map and made the map it self larger . But taking expansions out of the sum shows that sacred 2 is larger then the base game of WoW. IT is the same reason you cannot say minecraft has the largest map , as there is no map , it is just chunk loading and yes you can create maps in the game it are just loaded chunks and not really a map Why am I replying to a more then 3 year old thread? becuas I can , this is the internet. 1 Link to comment

Popular Post colif 36
Four years since my last post in here (how time flies). Sacred 2's map size may not be as big as some but the fact its all hand drawn makes up for it, I feel. It still holds its ground after 6 years. Huge maps with nothing in them is a waste of time. The pattern seems to be to make a massive world but very few people get the right density. Fallout games are close, the map size might be too small but you can't go far without running into an event. I have seen a map of minecraft, its massive.. but as Varanca said, its just an sandpit, not an actual playable space. Its big enough to let others create entire worlds in it. 2 Link to comment
gogoblender 3,071
Agreed. Sacred's map is plenty packed with loveliness. In the last few years of SacredWiki, some of the members have been pulling out massive amounts of flags, devices, details, details details...the stuff that made the game world breathe. Fauna, flora, armor sets, all part of one of the best values for gaming ever made. I think at the time of Sacred's release, a kind of car game came out with tons of guns that had an even larger space...but because it was so empty, it was meaningless. gogo 1 Link to comment
Ysne58 236
That is a huge dichotomy for people working with filling in heightmaps for any of the TES games. It's possible to just have the game auto fill, but looks pretty damn artificial, but would take decades to do by hand. The modders over at DC have worked out a compromise where the autofill and then go over and add in the finer details that make it look good. Some of what they are doing is really nice. Popular Post WyattBoyer 7
I just started playing this game today. I played it once before, but it never hooked me. Now it did. I absolutely love this game. The world is alive; it lives and breathes, I swear. To answer your question, no it's not as big as WoW and it never will be...HOWEVER as others said, the density is perfect. There's always something to see and do in the game. It's amazing, and I can't believe I didn't find this game sooner. 2 Link to comment
