Pic Upload Testors For Sacredwiki - Now Looking!

Recommended Posts

Hey guys!

It loox like Schot is saying that pic uploads loox like it could be okay... we are looking for testers please to post results?

Different kinds of file formats, thumbnailing...we'd like to see the system worked out, and put through it's paces. If possible to post your test results and perhaps some results of what you were able to do?

We're going to have to re-write the pic instructions for wiki as we're not using photobucket anymore (yeeeeeee haw) and are looking to see what the wiki's image upload/management system is capable of with some good bug testing.

Cheers

:)

Ok.. I uploaded a pic to the Wiki... It seems to be there. Now, exactly how DO I go about making use of it? I tried a few variations of the pic's basic URL - but no joy... I get the frame and a URL inside of it. If I follow the instructions - use Image:filename.jpg - I get the frame and a gray spot inside. So does this mean the frame code is broken with new pics?

I take that back - I used just the Image:HolgerFlottman.JPG link and it didn't seem to work properly either. If I use the Embed Pic button on the toolbar, it creates a red link.

The page needing a link - the Epic Office Quest. The pic can be found here. It's about 1/2 way down the page.

GAAAH! :cha (18):

Edit: OK.. I got the pic to show up... Full sized. Any way to make it do the auto thumbnail thing with the lightbox?

Edit 45: OK.. Finally got the thing sorta working. It's now displaying both the big picture as well as the thumb I manually created in the S2frame. When you click either one - it takes it to the page created for THAT pic.. The thumb goes to the thumb pic, the full pic goes to the full pic's page.

Reminding myself that it was SOOOO much simpler using the bucket...

We're looking I think at how we're going to organize this all...and if thumbnails are working too.

Are you happy with the way this new image system is working, yays or nays, comments?

Thanx guys! I don't have time to investigate the specifics of image uploads and how to use them yet so I'm very grateful for your efforts. :) Here's a page about how to use the images that you upload.

http://www.mediawiki...iki/Help:Images

There's a possibility that I'll need to enable some features of the wiki in order to get the uploaded images to be re-sizable thumbnails. Lemme know!

Hard to say since all we can do is upload at this point, although the upload went easy and smooth. For multiple file uploads, bucket was king of easy too.

The organizing and browsing of uploaded images will be kind of a big deal to get the whole "system working" I think

Oh that reminds me... I think we can add categories to images in order to maintain a similar structure to the one photobucket had. Without all the lag of photobucket. That's something I won't miss. Sheesh!

png uploading should be working fine now. I don't know why but the wiki's internal file checker doesn't like png anymore so it's not my friend anymore. Found a nice complacent external checker. :P

Ok.. I used the guide with how to do thumbs - that's NOT quite a solution.

It puts a frame around your pic - so the S2Frame doesn't quite work any more. The thumb links to the Wiki page for the image. No joy on the lightbox thing - yet.

Feh.. I'd hate to lose the S2Frame...

heh, I'm sure Schot won't want to lose his treasured piece of code. It's just about how much work we can squeeze out in a day

Never fear! Those S2frames aren't going anywhere, I just need a breakdown of how they're not working and I can make the necessary changes. :)

P.s.

Oh ok. I see the pic you worked on wolfie. I'll see if I can fix that up!

Here we go. Just a slight variation in the image code. It's a built in feature of the wiki to exclude the default frame style. Just leave out the "thumbnail" part of the image and you're good to go!

I created a Sandbox for anyone who wants to tinker. Feel free to change the page however you like for testing purposes.

Cool. btw.. I got a pic which got uploaded to Image:th_HolgerFlottmann.jpg which would be a proper sized, old style thumbnail but I wasn't able to make it work. It would display both the thumb and big pic... I think that was mainly because I wasn't using the standard Http:// URL to the pic.

Understood wolfie. In the days of Photobucket we sometimes needed to make our own custom sized thumbnails hence the need to upload two different sizes of the same pic. With the wiki upload you can make the the image any size you want it to be simply by changing the number you put in the image code. The wiki will auto generate the resize. You can for example try these image sizes on the wiki:

You can see it uses the same image as a sample to generate the resize from. I've put it on the Sandbox page to show it in effect. :)

Great post to read Schot!

I think this is what the peeps are looking for, that quick ability to add pix to the wiki... and loox like the wiki's software is going to be as far reaching in scope and possibilities as what Bucket had.

Thanks Schot, we're almost there!

Just gave it a quick try and uploading is no issue for me.

Things that I don't see how to do yet (if I missed something I'm sorry, incredibly sick atm....been in bed for 36 hrs so far...god I hate flu's :D )

1) When uploading I cannot select what directory or folder I want to place it in

2) Can't see any easy way to search or browse to a folder to get pic code (tried going directly to www.sacredwiki.org/images/Sacred_2/places and get a 403 Forbidden error)

3) Haven't tried, but will need to be able to create new directories/folders as I progress thru wiki projects

Ah, I was wondering if you were out partying without us. ^^ Nice to know you're feeling a bit better. Flu's are a drag man. What's also a drag is a ton of unexpected snow in a matter of 24 hours. Fer cryin out loud this stuff moves in fast!

For the sake of organizing photos what we can do is to add categories whenever we upload a pic. On the upload page you can put a category into the summary text field to associate the image to it. For example I just uploaded Ice Crystal.png. In the summary I put . Whatever image has that category will show up on the Category:Blacksmith Item Images.

Alternatively, whenever in search of a previously uploladed image what we can do is just go to the page on the wiki where the image is in use. Then you can reach the page for that image by clicking on it and if need be make changes to it by re-uploading a revised version of the image.

Now don't forget to drink yer Ovaltine! :P

Ok... so then the thing is - NOT to use the THUMB command and just size it using the __px command. I suppose that'll work.

Yeah, sorry about that "Help" page. I think it could have been written a lot better. Granted what we're doing with our frames is fairly unique compared to the standard wiki so we won't hurt the creator of that Help page too much. ^^

Not to be a pain, but there any way I can navigate to the Sacred 2/Images/Places/Artamark folder for example, and then create a new sub-folder from there and add new images into a new folder, instead of writing out the full directory path? Not a big deal, but if there's a way to do that, it would help out :D

Hoping there way a way to browse existing folders cuz I know at some point I'll upload pics into a misspelled folder, close that window before copying pic link and then have no idea how to get back to that folder in order to put pics on wiki page. I know nothing is Knuckles proof but just trying to think of possible issues so I know the solutions/limitations ahead of time :D

Sorry, keep thinking of things. Has anyone tried uploading more than one pic at a time yet? Do they all display on the page they were uploaded to? If not, sounds like I need to upload one at a time and copy/paste each link as I do them.

Unfortunately Mediawiki uses a completely different logic from what we're used to on Photobucket. Essentially we don't have access to those old directories anymore. For creating new directories we'll have to use categories from now on. Further more, categories can can have subcategories. Basically categories that are embeded into one another. It's a bit tricky to wrap the head around. I'll help you get rolling Knuckles. Just tell me what you're working on and what you need and I'll do the set up and explain as I go. :)

Oh and there's always the Recent Changes link. If ever you loose track of an upload just hit the Recent Changes link. Your uploads will be displayed there as well. If it's something you uploaded like a week ago you can click on your own name where ever it is on screen which will take you to your user page. On that page a new link at the bottom left of the page will appear called "Contributions" Clicking that will display everything you have done on the wiki since day 1. Orrrrrrr...

You could browse/search the File list which contains uploaded content:

Image List (This link can also be seen on the upload page itself; list of uploaded files.

You could even use the Main search for the wiki to find that elusive pic. First you'd click the Search button without typing anything in. This will take you to a search page with more options. Click the Image checkbox and turn all other checkboxes off to narrow down the search to only Images and then type in your best guess as to what the image might be called.

Give it a try Knuckles. It might actually end up being a more efficient system. It should be! The world's most demanded upon knowledge base uses it. :smart:

Looking into that. I've found an addon to do that but it's a beta so I'll have to test it first and make sure it doesn't blow anything up. ^^

Schot, I was hoping you could help start me off. I've been beating my head against the wall trying to fix the Black Oaks Places page. But no matter what I do I cannot get the pics to display correctly. I Just see the image link code within the frame. I think the link code is right but can't seem to find the pics doing a Wiki image search. I tried searching with a pic I just uploaded and it found that. Maybe because the pics I'm trying to find were part of the bulk transfer?

Also could you give me an example of the full code I would type in if I wanted to upload a pic. For example: I want to upload a file named CragRockMainPic to the Sacred 2/Places/Crag Rock directory.

If you could help with these 2 things I think I'd be all set to continue working on the Places Section. Just not really good with code or syntax but I can copy and paste pretty well :D

Edit: the Main pic seems to display correctly on all the affected pages. It's just all the thumbnailed versions that aren't working. ( so my best guess is all the pics were transferred over)
