Runes of Magic

Which game would that be Bondbug? I assume your asking about something other than Sacred 2.

Doh I just reread this, my sleep deprived mind didn't catch it at first. "Runes of Magic"? Havent heard of it yet but I'll look it up and see if any interest sparks.

I looked it up HERE and it looks interesting. Free to play, free to download, looks like they are very active in updates and gifting players that stay with them. Chapter III in the story is coming online very soon it seems. The features looked very friendly and interesting.

If I wasn't addicted to Sacred I would give this game a try.

Thought I'd try it as the best part for me is learning how the game ticks, and running the lower levels to look at character building.

But I picked a bad time. They seem to be shut down for overhauls yesterday and today, so although I downloaded the initial instal files (between 5 and 6 hours) and installed (only 2 hours + for extra updates) the installation wouldn't complete and there is now a new patch. Perhaps tomorrow. Some comments compare it as a WoW clone, but there appear to be some interesting ideas. I'll look see.

I am still a Sacred Plus fanatic, but like a break from time to time. :o

Thanks Furian - I'll let you know how it goes.

Good to hear Bondbug, Think I did read something about the server being offline for updates. and they did speak about the end of chapter two and chapter 3 coming very soon.

Link to comment

Yes, it seems chapter 3 is in place. I would have been happy enough to look at the game in chapter 1, but with on-line games they stuff everything onto your PC regardless.

I'll try again later, but I have a new hard disk to instal first - more than triples my Gb.

Friday:

I installed OK. Then it spent over 3 hours downloading 16 updates!

It more or less completed the 17th then froze. Yes there is a forum, but you don't always get answers!

As frustrating as trying to get Sacred 2 working!

Saturday:

OK. I uninstalled and reinstalled from the beginning. Would you believe it that in the few days since I first downloaded they had updated the setup.exe to include 16 of the updates I had so laboriously installed 2 days before.

It is installed now and runs ... just a little problem with password!

These kind of games are not "totally free", they are microtransaction games. Big difference :P

I've heard generally negative opinions about it, but if you are looking for a subscription-less game, it may be for you. Just keep in might that you might have to pay much more than a usual subscription fee in order to enjoy all of the game's features. I'm currently playing a similar game...

Bit early to report on Runes of Magic - I am still careering round the training area. I am still picking daisies, cutting wood and mining ore. Plenty of artisanal skills if you like that sort of thing.

It looks like being a poor man's WoW (the elf training area surrounded by mountains as in WoW). I have not felt it necessary to spend any cash yet. I never do with these games (I haven't got any). You need to be in a hurry to feel the need to improve your armour/weapons etc quickly. I am not in any rush.

There are only two races, human and elf, each with 6 types all with both male and female. Lots of choice of colour, face and hairstyle for your char: variations of size for head, shoulders and the rest, which seems to be normal for these 'free' games. Costumes so far not specially pornographic!

Pleasant and undemanding so far.

Had more time to look at this now. Very much a WoW type, but I prefer it - not so full of aggressive strutting types demanding duels every few seconds and shouting chicken when you can't be bothered with them.

Mind you I have not yet emerged from the training areas. You can dual class here - I have a lvl12 priest/lvl11 scout. And you can learn all the material collecting and manufacturing skills before you go out into the big world, and even take them to reasonably useful levels. I have a basic house "home" where I need to go to switch my primary and secondary classes, which is a bit of a nuisance, but you can only level in one class at a time though many skills of the current secondary class are available. The fact that you are still examining the various aspects of the game within these training areas does not mean that there are not a few nasty surprises which can kill off the unprepared, and for a number of quests you are encouraged to work in groups even at this stage. It may even be impossible to do them solo.

And I suspect that the world outside will be tough enough for most HC type

Plenty of servers, all here european , most "crowded" a lot of the time. Judging from the national flags on these servers there is only one French, with three channels, and not overcrowded. Most are PVE oddly enough.

I would recommend giving it a try.

I was just wondering if any Dark members are playing the MMORPG called Runes of Magic.

Its been out for about a year now (though I have only just recently discovered it).

Its basically free to play and for a free game it is exceptionally well made and supported. The community is very friendly and mature. There are also many player made addons that make the game exceptional imho.

There is an option to purchase stuff with real money which can make things happen quicker and easier but you can just about enjoy everything the game has to offer without spending a cent.

I have been playing for a couple of weeks now and I'm having a great time.

I have found a very friendly guild and we use Vent to communicate.

The game is also solo friendly...well so far it has been for me....so its not mandatory to have to party up to advance in the game.

And so far not one single crash to desktop :D

I'm a bit concerned about these type of 'free' to play financing-models for a game..

how is it in this case, balancing related ?

  • what can you buy for cash,
  • how much does it cost ?
  • are there 'uber' items you can only get for real money?
  • any 'level' / area / feature restrictions?
  • or, can you really get everything if you don't pay for it, just not so easy or fast ?
  • so in the end, is it a pure item-shop, or can you spend your cash on other stuff as well?

I believe Anitrust already said it pretty well,

in some these games if you don't want to feel 'left out' or too 'handicapped' after a while and if you got hooked up,

then maybe you end up having to pay more than if it was 'only' a monthly subscription fee?

however, I'm not a friend of both versions thenm because even monthly subscription fees are not only more than I'm willing to spend,

more important it would be also more than I'm able to..

I don't buy very much new games a year,

and as I like many different kind of games, it's quite (almost too) much even if I only buy 1-2 per genre..

usually you see something around ~15 Euros / Month for these 'subscription based' games,

may it be Eve Online, or WoW, etc.. you name it..

I can't afford that kind of money. often I stick with games I like for several years. in case of Sacred, it's since 2004..

that's ~ 6 years, and would be (12*15)*6 = 1080 Euro's for ONE single game?

even with all those multiple accounts and versions of Sacred that I bought, in total it might be less than ~ 250 €

(1x S1 and Sacred 2 on release>expensive, rest after some time>'value' packs w. reduced price, perhaps 12accounts total)

that said, F2P with item shop / other micro-transaction still sounds like an interesting alternative, but it's not always the best one...

eg. in case of Sacred 2, pay once for the boxed / DL version is pretty nice.. and even if there were no more closed hc servers, or if they'd cost money suddenly,

I could still play SP or via LAN..

either way, subscription or F2P or pay-only-once , my personal 'acceptance limit' might be ~5 € per month / single game, if it's over a period of several years.. (2-5)

I find it funny, in a strange sort of way, that a game that is definitely free to play would cause criticism because people might decide paying for some stuff.

I have stated above that anything you want in this game can be made available without paying. It depends how much effort you want to devote to playing.

I cannot explain it any clearer than that can I?

You pay to either get things sooner or for some extras that certainly don't stop you from playing.

Take extra inventory space for example: Your free version has two inventory bags, a bank storage and a house storage.

If you want even more storage then you buy it, but it is not a necessity.

Another example: Mounts in this game give you an increase in movement speed.

I bought a permanent mount with real money because I wanted to. I liked the look of the mount I got.....looks like a dinosaur. :4rofl:

However I didn't have to do that. I could have bought a temporary horse mount for game gold accumulated simply by playing.

It was totally my choice and makes no difference to being able to play the game.

This is a game that you can enjoy to end game (which btw I'm in no hurry to do) without paying a cent. That is how they have modelled it.

How much more "free" do people want? ;)

edit:

Non MMORPG's like Sacred and Sacred 2 can end up being pay to play also.

Their versions are called "expansions" :P

I completely agree with you mate. Games that are free either need micro-transactions or a large amount of ads to support their game. I personaly enjoy free games with the choice of purchasing additional content.

This game is like a WoW clone but without monthly fees, its cool. I already played WoW for some time and I must say I prefer the maps on WoW of course its got more vibe in it and it immerses you even more into the game despite the cartonish graphics and all.

I Already have 2 characters a mage level 12 and a Rogue level 6. Im still exploring the game I havent got around to understand whats good for crafting or anything, like for example in WoW you could choose 2 professions for gathering and get alot of money early in the game by selling it on Auction house. But since you start the game on your 1st 10 lvls or so you learn how to gather all the stuff like wood, minerals, plants I guess you loose advantage on that point. I havent explore alot of the map, also im taking my time doing the local quests, I think its alot of info to digest on a 1st tryout.

Saw a video about Runes of Magic, mostly intercut with WoW clips to show how it's a clone in every way (pics of their official pages even looked similar). I've heard about games that are similar to WoW (anyone seen aion clips?) but this looked exactly like WoW in a less polished state. That being said, if they can make it work it'd be cool, the microtransaction thing sounds interesting, only bad thing I can think of is when you get community complaints regarding -balance-, mostly for pvp stuff (people that spend the money can get better equipment [or whatever] sooner than others).

I tried this a while a go. I may give it a shot again to see how it has been updated.

As to the microtransactions, I don't mind it at all. Both free to play and pay to pay boils down to the same thing for me...time = money. I never have the time to get the best stuff, so if I want it, I have to pay for it. Either in an official shop or by buying on the "black market". Since I don't care about having the best gear, it isn't an issue for me. But I can see how others in my situation would pay real life cash for ingame items.

Just updating. The game came up elsewhere and reminde me of this thread.

I have been playing some time now and have not spent a penny. Living on the charity of those with more money to sling about perhaps, but I cannot get rid of the feeling that spending cash to hasten things, which is no doubt what the 'sponsors' want, is cheating. And, with a game like this, what is the hurry. My chars walk quite a lot and enjoy crafting in between spasms of madness.

The biggest trouble has been the problems after updates. The last one developed colour problems which, despite a helpful forum, took me three weeks to get round. Like playing in thick snow - very seasonal but unendurable while it lasted.

I'm just pinging this thread - a friend at work is downloading the client at a snail's pace, but I'm eager to get my hands on it! Perhaps by the end of the week. :BlobRed:

I'm intrigued by the house items and house maids that give bonusses (boni?) - are these mostly credit card items, or can one purchase enough furniture with in game dosh?

fiiiinaly in the game. sheesh how many Mb patch downloads can they squash into a month:) It's a bit too much if you ask me. Had to download 250Mb again today... and when I fired the game up... *insert large alphorn blowing here* "Your GPU does not meet the minimum requirements" :oooo:

I can play at minimum settings, but it's really no joy. Fortunately my company is rolling out new laptops across the board, so hopefully I'll have something to play it on by the end of next month. (And probably have 1Gb of patches to download again...) :sigh:

So far I manage to stumble my way to a level 7 priest, but whenever I play I have to wear my cap with the big L on the front...
