How's the game?

Recommended Posts

OMG its sooooo fun. IMHO, I think people either love it or hate it. There has to be a reason why they sold something like 2mil so far. It's different then other games, you have to change your mind set... stop grinding and just have fun. The way to get anywhere in the game is to just have fun and PLAY. IMHO, I think people either love it or hate it.

There is no Questing or Missions, unless you count your personal story which is interesting and takes you all over. The achievements are interesting too... Its a first for me to actually actively work on getting achievements accomplished. Generally I hate PvP... but I love GW2 WvW, I haven't tried their PvPe yet, not sure I will cuz one on one isn't my style. Crafting is interesting, simple to do (yet complex) and fun. You can craft nice things at level 0 even. And the world is full of little things you can do and see. Like to just explore and find out of the way places, it has that. Like puzzle and jumping games, it has those too. Want to go play with your friend that just started a new Char... go for it, your level is auto adjusted for any zone that is below your current level.

Almost daily I come across some new little thing that is completely presented in a totally different way then I have ever seen in a game before. I have yet to see the Dragon fly over my head which I hear from others is incredible, or to fight the Behemoth... or any of the World Events... but I'm having tons of fun.

The game is A-MA-ZING! But only that won't help you make your opinion.

Kiyeri posted a great summary. I really love the fact that there is no grinding at all, just go out and have fun. The game is a bit faster and action-oriented than GW1, but the learning curve is not that steep. The game world is beautiful, rich, detailed, with lots and lots of things to discover every corner. You're being rewarded by playing the game and exploring.

Hope that helps.

This only relates to the PvE game. I have not played PvP.

If you want to specialise as a healer forget it. GW2 doesnt have that. Instead every class has it's own healing capabilities.

So basically it means that GW2 is very solo friendly. You will need to join parties later on to take on the optional dungeons though.

Also you will come across a lot of random encounters where you will automatically join up with others in the areas.

This gives you a feeling that you are always part of the Guild Wars community even though you are playing solo. It are a great feature and works well.

So...

If you want to play a mmo where it is mandatory to have specialist characters in an organised party to progress, GW2 is not for you.

If on the other hand you like playing online and chatting to guild mates but basically playing solo, then GW2 fits the bill nicely.

btw...I absolutely love the game..............so far.

We can and do party up with guildies and do stuff together all the time. While it is not mandatory you still get that party feeling by doing so. We have found that by grouping up and organizing ourselves we can take on bigger and badder Baddies.

yeah I second everything already said. I'm just having tons of fun in this game!

I'd be soloing mostly and then there's a boss or a group event that kicks off, and you just see players stream in from every direction to take part! No loot stealing, no gathering node stealing - everyone gets reward!

Levelling is a kind of afterthought for me at the moment and I'm just playing it like Sacred 2 - for the fun and the loot!

I just wish I could play at higher gfx settings... :sigh:

I've not had the Wasp queen encounter yet and I my pc crashed while fighting the Behemoth... since then I spent a few hours at the swamps but my timing appears to be off, alas. One day, my preciouuuus, oooonnneee day!

The game is getting real challenging at the zone I'm in now, with mobs fighting back more intelligently and also dishing a number of knock downs and stuns. But it's a good kind of challenging. I play a guardian and doing little dodging and mostly making use of shields to protect me against damage and knock downs.

Every character has a ranged and close combat option (although IMO the guardian suffers most with ranged attacks), so you don't need to contemplate too much about which character is ideally suited to your play style. Just pick one you fancy with a race you fancy, go out and start the killin'

But one thing I can say for sure, when Anet promised there is no 'go out and kill 10 rats' they meant it. That said, I just got an achievement for slaying 100 innocent creatures... Rabbits, Raccoons, owls, they cross me, they gonna pay.... *scwewy wabbits*.

EDIT: I just want to add good value for money!

I solo a great deal, I kind of like traveling all over the map checking it out before moving on. Even when it takes me places I should not be like Ebonhawke.

But I really enjoy grouping up with three or four others and wondering down the road seeing what lies around the next corner, even when Flooxim runs us into bad guys twice our level.

Been playing for a few days, it's tons of fun :)

Basically, it's a game that has something for everyone. Anet has addressed many weaknesses that similar games usually have. GW2 PvE mechanics encourage cooperation between players, as opposed to cutthroat manners of other MMOs. You actually have fun when you meet random players. My only gripe is that it doesn't encourage partying with friends and guildies, it has more of a PUG mentality. It doesn't force you to grind gold, most stuff is cheap and easily obtainable. Leveling is pretty fast and enjoyable, with all the stuff that gives you experience (you can't even sneeze without getting some experience).

Dynamic Events kinda replace the traditional quests, but not as much as the hype suggests. It's a giant step forward from killing 10 rats though.

sPvP is awesome. You don't even have to level to participate. You become level 80 and get all the items, and the rewards are purely cosmetic (awesome-looking versions of the same items). It makes you want to PvP, again as opposed to some other games of the genre where you get penalized in many ways.

I only did a bit of WvW, being low level myself. It also gives you level 80, but no items... You actually need to level to be effective. It requires a lot of organization as well, so far I've mostly seen zerging.

And that for me is the biggest thing...the game's just plain fun and relaxing. Dying has so little stress, I don't feel like I have to be playing with all pistons firing...I can just explore and hang out. I'm just barely playing, but looking forward to joining up with the whole clan here, so we can maybe raise the ante ONLY when we want.

Antitrust and Spritzen, come along you two!

:hugs:

Yes. If you prefer, you can also PM it to me. If you run into any member online, they can also send invites.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi guys, so I picked up the game at the weekend and although it's running a bit slow (12fps!) I will be kicking around from time to time :viking:

Currently I'm just getting up a Thief which seems fun, although still doing starter quests. I'll pop my ID in the invites section soon. I'm from the UK but joined up to the US home server you guys are on so I can party when I'm pulling a late one or you are lol... Didn't see the lag being that bad, which was nice. :)

I'm always amazed with how Guild Wars has kept the creep of lag out of their games. Guild Wars 1 was very satisfying in this regard, and this second is feeling just as good.

Hoping to meet up Spritzen!

If you are running an Nvidia card, make sure and get on their site to ensure you have the latest drivers. If that does not help, you can always try using the Auto-Detect graphics setting (although some people find it sets theirs to low).

Regarding lag, our last dungeon run included a guy from EU and another from South Africa. Neither of them reported any serious lag.
